Dear friends in the Risen Lord, I was deeply moved to observe that the March For Our Lives, the student-driven pro-test against gun violence, came about just days before the 50th anniversary of the assas-sination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Of course, the presence and words of Dr. King’s 9-year-old granddaughter at the Washington rally gave the world a living reminder of the connection between that event and King’s legacy. But even before young Yolanda Renee King spoke, the occasion was pregnant with Dr. King’s example and spirit. Once again young people were confronting a manifold evil in a non-violent way, espousing a dream that, as King put it in his famous speech at the 1963 March on Washington, “we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope..., to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” But it was not long before the young leaders of the March for Our Lives began to be vilified in some quarters for their heroic efforts—which I suppose ties them even more deeply to Dr. King’s life and witness. The anniversary has motivated me to locate my copy of Taylor Branch’s magisterial history of the civil rights movement, America in the King Y ears. I’m often asked about books that have had an impact on me, and I always put this 3.000-page trilogy very near the top. (I was impressed that President Obama mentioned it as one of his favorites, too, in an interview some years ago.) I have placed those books on my nightstand for sum-mer reading, and I’ll be happy to share them as I finish them. In a joint venture between our two parishes, Father Bryan Small, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul in Decatur, will join me in leading a local pilgrimage in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s death. On Saturday, May 19 we will visit the MLK Nation-al Historical Park, the King Center and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Details are elsewhere in this bulletin. I hope many of you may choose to join us. Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

O God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship with all living things, to whom you gave the Earth as their home in common with us.

We remember with shame that in the past we have exercised the high dominion of humans with ruthless cruelty, so that the voice of the Earth, which should have gone up to you in song, has been a groan of travail.

May we realize that all creatures exist not for us alone but for themselves and for you, and that they, too, enjoy the sweetness of life. Amen.

HAVE YOU REMEMBERED IHM IN YOUR WILL? A charitable bequest to your parish will allow you to continue in death the Christian stewardship you practice in life. It does not matter whether the gift is $500, $5,000 or $500,000, your bequest will be remembered gratefully by those who come after you. The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia can assist you in remembering IHM in your Will. Those who make a bequest or a planned gift to the parish become members of the parish Legacy Society and the Archdiocesan Deo Gratias Society. For more information, contact Juliette Greco of the Catholic Foundation of North Georgia at 404-497-9440 or [email protected].

GIVE BY TEXT! You can now make a contribution to IHM with a quick text message! Simply send a text to 404-948-4757. In the message just indicate the amount you would like to contribute. (Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount. Example: $25.) Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register. Click on the link and enter your cardholder name and credit or debit card information. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a text verification and a receipt via email. For future giving, simply send a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically!

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY An IHM parishioner has pledged up to $5,000 to match donations made to the IHM St. Vincent de Paul Conference through the month of April. This is a great opportunity to express Easter joy and double the impact of your gift through our benefactor's generous match. The IHM SVdP Conference serves the poor in our area throughout the year through clothing drives, food drives, the Thanksgiving Dinner program and the Christmas Giving Tree program. And IHM SVdP Caseworkers visit people in need in their homes to make a personal connection, pray with them, and assess their needs. Most clients need help with utilities or rent, so the IHM Conference uses your donations to help clients stay in their homes, keep the heat and lights on and the water running. Thank you!

YOU’VE GOTTA HAVE A PLAN—ESTATE PLANNING FOR YOUNG FAMILIES April 25 You are invited to attend a very special workshop hosted by IHM Church and School. Stephen Weyer, attorney and member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, will speak about the essential documents and plans every parent should have in place in the event of an injury, illness or greater tragedy. Learn how to ensure your final wishes are carried out and the ones you love are provided for. While end-of-life planning may make many of us feel uncomfortable, the peace of mind you will have when you know your family will be taken care of is invaluable. This workshop will be hosted this Wednesday April 25, 2018 at 7:00pm. So that we may adequately plan, please register all attendees at https://goo.gl/vqd3K2, or go to the IHM website for more information. Childcare will be provided.

END OF LIFE CARE: A CATHOLIC PHYSICIAN’S PERSPECTIVE

Carl C. Hug Jr., MD, PhD Sunday, April 29 , 2018

10:15am—11:15am IHM School Library

Catholics affirm the inviolable human dignity of those who are nearing death. At the same time, in light of Christ’s resurrection, we see death as a reality not to be feared or avoided at all costs. Dr. Hug will clarify Church teachings about the end of life and share insights gained over 30 years of caring for patients as an anesthesiologist-intensivist physician at Emory University Hospital. All are welcome, and questions are encouraged.

Each Thursday, Dr. Louanne Bachner leads an informative and prayerful

discussion of the lectionary readings for the following Sunday. The study

meets in the Lower Level at two different times: 9:30 a.m. or 7:00 p.m.

If you are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, please
