The other day I heard T. D. Jakes mention studying the miracles of Jesus, so I decided that sounded like a good idea. I am not much for chronological order, so I started with the one I thought I was most familiar with, the feeding of the 5,000. I started reading in Matthew chapter 14, and was amazed at what the Lord revealed to me. I wanted to share a few of these things with you.
In verse 13 we find Jesus preaching and healing a large crowd, basically in the middle of nowhere. To understand where He is, we have to know where He has been. In the preceding verses, Jesus has learned of the death of John the Baptist. Jesus, understandably saddened by the loss of his cousin, left the crowds inside the city. He set out in a boat, ironically on the same water he would walk on later that night, to have some quiet time with His Father. He was sad. He just wanted to be alone. He longed for the comfort of His Father’s voice. But the crowds followed him. He came back to the shore, and with a broken heart, the Bible says He ministered. When it wasn’t easy, He served. When He wanted to stay in the boat, He stepped out into the crowd, and had compassion. In the worst of circumstances, He still gave His best. I think if we are looking for miracles, we have to do the same. If we want the best God has to offer, then we have to offer God our best. When it’s hard, when it hurts, when we want to be alone, we must choose to have compassion, the way Jesus did.
I can just imagine being a disciple during this time. It was obvious there had been some mumbling about what to feed these masses. The disciples were worried. They were obviously trying to work out a solution to the post sermon hunger pangs, or they wouldn’t have found the kid with the 5 loaves and 2 fish! Surely this wasn’t going to meet their needs. But in verse 19, Jesus did the unthinkable. He gathered this mob of people, sat them down, and said the blessing like they were all about to eat! When Jesus knew there wasn’t enough, He gave thanks. Before the bread was multiplied, He praised God for what was, or wasn’t there. I think if we are looking for miracles, we must have faith like that!
And finally, after Jesus blessed the bread, He broke it, and it was multiplied to feed the masses. Did you catch that? Jesus didn’t just pass out loaves. As so often has to happen with us, the miracle came in the breaking. I have noticed it’s true in my own life. When I think I have it all together, I leave no room for God to work. But when I’m broken before the Lord, He will prove His faithfulness. And friends, when God proves His faithfulness, that’s when the miracles happen.

Marriage Amendment: A Heated Debate! Over the past few weeks we have all seen the television advertisements against the NC Marriage Amendment, which will appear on the ballot of the primary election on May 8, 2012. These advertisements are filled with much inaccurate information in an attempt to prompt an emotional response from the audience. In light of these advertisements and discussion centered around this issue, I felt it beneficial to share a few of the “myths and facts” of the NC Marriage Protection Amendment.
Myth: The amendment isn’t necessary. Fact: Unless North Carolina passes the Marriage Protection Amendment, our present marriage laws are vulnerable to politicians and activist judges overturning them and imposing same-sex marriage here. This is what occurred in New York, New Hampshire, California, Massachusetts, Iowa, District of Columbia, Vermont and Connecticut. Already, lawsuits have been filed in NC to invalidate our marriage laws! We need the Amendment to ensure that lawsuits like this are not successful.
Myth: The amendment could invalidate domestic violence laws as they are currently applied to unmarried couples. Fact: This myth is an example of the length to which opponents of the amendment are going to attempt to trick voters into opposing the amendment. No state with a similar amendment has ever ruled that it has any impact on domestic violence laws. In Ohio, their Supreme Court made clear that their marriage protection amendment would not impact the application of the state domestic violence laws. The same is true in North Carolina.
Myth: The amendment could interfere with existing child custody and visitation rights that seek to protect the best interests of children.
Fact: The amendment has nothing to do with child custody laws or arrangements.
Myth: The amendment is bad for business. Fact: Marriage is not only good for families and children, but also good for business. Research shows that states with a marriage protection amendment in their state constitution are the nation’s top performing economic states. This includes eight of the top ten “best states for business” (according to a survey of 556 CEOs) and eight of the top ten states for job growth (according to Moody’s Analytics, Nov. 23, 2011).
Myth: The measure contains vague language that could have profound unforeseen consequences. Fact: The amendment is two sentences and easy to read and understand. It means, simply, that marriage will continue to be only between one man and one woman and that private parties can enter enforceable contracts with other private parties.
As you can see these are just a few of the myths that have been circulating around the marriage amendment. If you have questions about this amendment, I would encourage you to visit www.voteformarriagenc.com to learn more information. The bottom line is this amendment will protect the traditional and Biblical definition of marriage, which was established by God long ago. I hope you will join me at the polls on May 8 and vote in favor of this amendment.
These myths and facts were taken from the article, “Myths & Facts: The North Carolina Marriage Protection Amendment,” www.voteformarriagenc.com.
