Mason Community Center is proud to feature the Mason Swim Academy, presenting learn-to-swim instruction based on a proven lesson program developed by SwimAmerica. Students will be taught by certifi ed coaches as they progress through ten stations of competency.

The SwimAmerica format was developed by experienced Olympic coaches and is off ered in cooperation with the Mason Manta Rays swim team, one of the top swim teams of its size in the country. Let the teams experience help you or your child become a competent swimmer even if you do not expect to swim competitively.

Group swim lessons are for children 3 to 17 years old. Adults interested in swim lessons are invited to register for private or semi-private swim lessons. All lessons are held in the Leisure Pool unless otherwise noted.

Volunteer to be a CoachPart of the success of the Mason Swim Academy is due to many men and women who volunteer to coach or assistant coach. If you have past experience swimming, coaching, or teaching and are interested in volunteering for the Mason Swim Academy, please contact our Site Supervisors at 513.229.8555.

Many people with a Mason mailing address do not live within the city limits. Parts of Deerfield Township have a Mason mailing address and may also be in the Mason School District, but they are outside the city limits. The earnings taxes paid by Mason residents help pay for many benefits that are not available to non-residents. This is why Mason residents pay less for programs and events offered by Mason Community Center than non-residents.

Have you ever followed someones suggestion and achieved

results beyond your expectations? Heres a story of how one man

improved his health by using the Mason Community Center

to act on a friendly suggestion. While everyones situation is

di erent, one thing is for sureMason Community Center can

serve many needs. Our post-rehab program, personal trainer

sessions, drop-in group exercise classes (dozens every week!),

water programs, tness center, weight loss programs, and more

can help you achieve your goals. Heres how the center changed

Dave Andersons life.I joined the Mason Fitness Center in May of 2003 and have

been an active member ever since. I was mainly using the

weight machines and the pool in the mornings before I went

to work. I retired in 2007 and have been coming in the mid-

mornings almost every day during the week. At the end of

2009 I had my back operated on for a herniated disc and used

the Mason Fitness Center for most of my physical therapy

using the weight machines and swimming every day. In 2010

someone suggested that I try a Yoga class for my back. I had

a long discussion with Beth Tysl and in June I started with

Gentle Yoga one day a week. In 2011 I started doing 2 Yoga classes a week and then 3

days. The pain in my back has disappeared along with the

pains and numbness in my legs. I now can take hour long

walks with no problems and I usually walk to the Fitness

Center (20 minutes each way) in the mornings. This has been

the best thing for my recovery. I am now a huge proponent of Yoga and encourage everyone to try it. This year I was doing 4 classes a week and in April the Monday class was changed to a Cycle/Yoga class which is diff erent. Lori Hart gave me a

challenge to try this. I like the cardio aspect of the class and

the Yoga stretches afterwards. In June of this year I started

to also attend the Wednesday Cycle/Yoga class (now called

Cycle/Stretch). Since June I have noticed that my weight has

started to fall. When my back was operated on I weighed as much as 215

and at the beginning of June 2012 I was still 212. The end of

September I weighed 200 and holding. If you would have told

me that at age 69 I would start a cycling class and then lose

12 pounds I wouldnt have believed it. I havent been below

200 since the 1980s. I am now doing Cycle/Stretch (Mon,

Wed, Fri) and Yoga (Tue, Thu). I would like to thank Beth and Lori as you have changed my

life and also to thank Pooja, Kim and now Heather for keeping

me challenged, motivated and not becoming just another

    Old Geezer.

Flotation belts are worn during class, so swimming is not required!

This program is for women in all stages of pregnancy and up to 6 months postpartum.

    GOLF

Winter WeatherPlayA tip from Andy Horn, Golf Pro atthe Golf Center at Kings Island

This is a great time of year to play golf. In the off season, I will dress in layers and will play with winter gloves on. I also take a few clubs out of my bag to make it lighter when walking. With more clothes on during winter golf, I shorten my swing and take an extra club on most shots. You will hit the ball more solid and straighter.

On a windy day, play the ball back in your stance and you will have a lower ball fl ight with more spin. Your hands at impact will be in front of the ball and that will also help keep the ball lower. Another tip in the wintertime is to widen your stance. This will help your balance in the windy season.

Dress warmly and keep swinging all winter long!

As always, if you have any problems or questions, please call me in the golf shop!

Breaking theCycle of Holiday Weight GainBy Ti any WentzelFitness Program Coordinator

The holiday festivities are upon us. They seem to bring with them each year the tendency to eat more and exercise less, leading to the inevitable holiday weight gain. But it doesnt have to be that way. This year, dont allow yourself to say, I dont have time. This is one of the biggest excuses for not exercising and its not true. We all fi nd time to do the things we enjoy. Its time to put your health at the top of your priority list. If you dont have a block of 30 minutes or more to exercise, break it up. Heres how:

Indoor activities during the winter season: Do a short workout tape. Walk your stairs for 10 minutes. Use your lunch break to walk around or walk the stairs. When watching TV, use commercial time to do squats,

    lunges, crunches, etc.

Eating during the holidays: Use smaller plates at meals. This is an easy way to cut

down portions while still seeing a full plate. Cut food into smaller pieces. This helps your brain think

you have eaten more. Put the food away after you eat to avoid grazing and

overeating. Plan activities after meals to avoid sitting around and

eating out of boredom. Set a house rule that the kitchen is closed at a certain

time at night to avoid late night snacking. Your last meal should be at least 2 hours before bedtime.

Drink plenty of water. We tend to not feel as thirsty in the winter, but our body still needs water just as much as during warmer months.

Give yourself some incentive: Start the new year right by joining the second annual

Empowered to Lose BIG Challenge here at Mason Community Center. Its going to be bigger and better than last yearso dont miss out on the new options to make 2013 your healthiest yet!

Check out Mason Community Centers Pinterest page to fi nd great workout tips and motivation.

Set a goal to be more active in 2013. You dont have to run a marathon or drop 30 pounds, just get more involved in the community and make healthier choices.

Dont wait! Why not start today? Youll be happy you did.

The Importance of Nutrition in an Athletes DietA Tip from Buckeye Running Company

To some, the idea of eating before, during, or after a run can be hard to imagine. For others, its learning to cut back in quantities that becomes the struggle. A large part of running, especially long distances, is the way that you fuel your body. There are many options these days, but the only true way to determine what works best for you is to try them out and to learn from your experience.

Before: While water is extremely important, it is wise to also consume some form of electrolyte. Gatorade and PowerAde are two well-known liquid refueling agents. They work great for most people, but they arent the only product available. GU is most famous for their multi-flavored, palm-sized packets of, well, electrolyte goo. They also offer powdered electrolyte mixes that can be added to your water to provide you with the carbohydrates and sodium that your body will lose as you run. Another popular brand of electrolyte beverage is Nuun. This line does what the others do, but with a more carbonated taste.

Keep it simple. Before your run, eat simple (white) carbohydrates as opposed to complex (wheat and grain) carbs. Simple carbs are more easily digested by the body. Add in a little protein (peanut butter, almonds, or egg white) and are you ready for an optimal work out.

During: This is by far the trickiest area to discuss. Nutritional supplements during your workout are a game of trial and error. Currently on the market you can find gel cubes, crispy wafers, liquid filled gels, and the gel packets like GU. Most offer caffeine options. Learning what your body needs and beating it to the point of crash is the key to using these products. The brands offering the supplements will say to take some form of nutrition every 45 to 60 minutes of activity. I prefer to work off mileage. Every 4 to 6 miles, I will consume something other than just water. I have learned through trial and error that waiting until the 7-mile mark is too late and I spend the next few miles trying to recover instead of keeping my body on track. It may be different for you. It is a learning process, but one well worth it!

After: Again, water is vital, but I would also stress the importance of refueling your body with the electrolytes it has lost. Post-workout needs are similar to pre-workout in terms of food, but you have a wider palette available to you. Your body no longer needs to digest as quickly as during a workout. You can consume complex carbohydrates to enhance your metabolism and keep it moving. Protein should be one of, if not the first thing that goes in your mouth, but be leery of protein bars. Many are packed with sugar and unnecessary fats that can completely negate the time and effort you just put in. Instead, opt for a runners favorite: chocolate milk. Thats right, good old chocolate milk. Low-fat varieties offer proteins and sugars, without the fat of some protein bars.

Everything discussed above is offered at Buckeye Running Company. Visit our satellite store at Mason Community Centers Symbiosis store.

    Inside This Issue:

This past summer, the City of Mason launched a unique collaboration with a number of key businesses to produce a video showcasing the many assets in our community.

e partnership began when the city recruited Top Gun, Inc., to expand in Mason. As part of the incentive agreement for Top Gun, the company agreed to provide technical expertise to the city through KPG Creative. For a number of years, the city has also partnered with the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament organizers. When tournament leaders presented an opportunity to promote the city nationally on ESPN and other broadcast stations, the city and KPG Creative sprang into action and quickly produced a high-quality video at no additional cost to the city. e promotion aired nationally and has since been used for other business recruitment e orts.

Dear Mason Resident, is issue of Mason Ma ers is lled with economic development news. Whats the big deal about economic development? What is economic development?

economic development (noun) - the process of building a varied business base in the community in balance with residential development in order to realize the bene ts that businesses provide to the community

ere are three main elements to this de nition: business base, balance, and bene ts.Business Base. A racting a variety of business to the communityand maintaining an ongoing relationship with them to keep them hereis critical to the success of the community. Mason targets clean businesses in a variety of business sectors, with current special emphasis on biomedical, research, technology, and corporate centers. Community amenities such as our parks, local recreation and tourist venues, and good schools help a ract the types of businesses we look for. For example, City Councils Economic Development Commi ee has been able to turn opportunities at Mason Community Center into a ractive options for several new businesses, bene ing our recruitment e orts, the business employees, and the nancial health of the center. Balance. Having a variety of business sectors insulates the city from economic downturns in any one sector. Of equal importance is balancing residential growth with business growth. A bedroom community where most land is residential o en struggles to support city services while maintaining reasonable rates of taxation. A community that is largely business uses may not feel inviting to residents. e exact business/residential mix will be di erent for every community and I believe Mason is well positioned to maintain a good balance as development continues to occur.Benefi ts. ere is no doubtbusinesses bring bene ts. ey bring jobs for residents. ey contribute to the community through employee volunteering, donations, and board memberships. ey bring a sense of pride when you can say, Yes, thats in my community. And they bring tax dollars, perhaps the most measurable of these bene ts. Employees of businesses in Mason pay income taxes to Mason, just like you pay to the city where you work. is income is used to upgrade or repair roads, provide police services, maintain city parks, provide curbside services for residents such as brush chipping and leaf collection, and more. Without our strong business community, many services would need to be reduced, postponed, or eliminatedor residents would need to bear a higher share of the cost. Mason is fortunate to have a City Council that is commi ed to fostering balanced growth. It is this commitment that drives initiatives such as the Welcome Home video that was seen worldwide during broadcasts of the tennis tournament, held last August in Mason. Councils commitment to economic development helps make Mason more than you imagine.

We appreciate your calls, visits and e-mails to the Mason Municipal Center to discuss what is going on in the city. I encourage you to call 513.229.8500 or stop in any time during business hours if you need information or assistance.

    From the City Manager
