MASON'S THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE COURTHOUSE

CONCERTS CONTINUE WITH TWILIGHT MEMORIES BAND

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to downtown Mason on Thursday evening, August 23 and enjoy the sound of our community's 18-piece Twilight Memories Big Band. This free concert is sponsored by Dart Container Corporation and hosted by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce. This performance will be the seventh concert in this year's Thursday Night Live! Courthouse Concert series line-up.

The Chamber is nearing the end of their fourteenth season of their summer series of live musical entertainment presented by Independent Bank on select Thursday evenings. These free outdoor concerts take place at 6:00 p.m. on the Ingham County Courthouse lawn in downtown Mason. All concerts are weather permitting, but if this concert is rained out, the Chamber will host a rain date concert on August 30 with a band to be announced.

Mason's Optimist Club will be selling hot dogs, chips, water and pop nearby, so families can enjoy a picnic dinner during the concerts. Many concert-goers stop by restaurants and stores in Mason before and afterwards. During the concert, Mason Farmers Market will have a mini-market in front of Commercial Bank Mason.

"The Chamber is hosting Thursday Night Live! Courthouse Concerts again as a way to bring more fun and excitement to downtown Mason," said Elisabeth Yeider of Independent Bank, chair of the committee organizing the concerts. She is especially happy this year since most of the performers are returning for encore performances. "We thank our sponsors and volunteers and want to let folks know that we can bring these concerts to our visitors and residents only through their generosity and the assistance of the City of Mason and Ingham County," she added.

The series concludes with a concert by the Mason High School Band on Thursday, September 13, led by Beth Bousfield, MHS Band Director. The Mason High School Cheer Squad will join them in the program sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union. This last TNL concert in September will also mark the beginning of Mason's 45th anniversary "Down Home Days" festival.

The Mason Area Chamber of Commerce is also one of the sponsors of Mason's ninth annual Sun Dried Music Fest, held August 24-26 in the downtown of Mason surrounding the Ingham County Courthouse. This free festival is hosted by Sun Dried Music Festival, LLC.

MASON'S 9TH ANNUAL SUN DRIED MUSIC FEST IS ON AUGUST 24 - 26

The ninth annual Sun Dried Music Fest will return to downtown Mason on August 24, 25 & 26, 2018. The event, hosted by the nonprofit Sun Dried Music Festival, LLC, will again showcase a variety of exciting musical performances!

The music festival is free, thanks to support from sponsors, most of whom are Chamber members. The continuing title sponsor is the City of Mason's Downtown Development Authority. This event always features many popular bands in the mid-Michigan area. There will be lots of music, plenty of food, a variety of merchandise vendors, and a refreshment tent right next to the main stage.

On the evening of Friday, August 24, the Capital Sundogs will play in downtown Mason from 7:00 to 11:00 PM. The refreshment tent and vendor booths will also be open Friday evening.

The music fest begins in earnest on Saturday, August 25 at 12 noon with bands playing consecutive sets through to the late evening. Bands scheduled are The 89th Key, Unlimited, Sea Cruisers, Kari Holmes, Young Pioneer, Delilah DeWylde, Root Doctor, and Showdown. They will each take the stage at the corner of Maple and Jefferson Street, in historic downtown Mason and play one-hour sets, separated by half-hour sets on the Second Stage.

Families are invited to enjoy the special attractions for kids as well as the food, refreshments, and other vendors that are a part of the festival again this year. They are also again organizing worship and music on Sunday morning at 11:00 AM with the Mason Ministerial Association.

Besides the Mason DDA, sponsors of the ninth annual Sun Dried Music Fest include the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce, Ware's Pharmacy, Eagle View Golf Course, Dart Bank, Commercial Bank Mason, and Wolverine Engineers & Surveyors, among others.

ASK Named to 2018

CRN Fast Growth 150 List Recognizing Thriving Solution Providers in the IT Channel

Application Specialist Kompany (ASK), an I.T. managed services and cybersecurity company, announced that CRN®, a brand of The Channel Company, has named ASK to its 2018 Fast Growth 150 list. The list is CRN's annual ranking of North America-based technology integrators, solution providers and IT consultants with gross sales of at least $1 million that have experienced significant economic growth over the past two years. The 2018 list is based on an increase of gross revenue between 2015 and 2017. The companies recognized this year represent a remarkable combined total revenue of more than $50 billion.

"ASK is honored to be recognized for the significant growth we experienced over the last two years," said Mike Maddox, president and CEO of ASK. "The world of technology changes so fast and is becoming increasingly complex, especially when it comes to cybersecurity. Offering cybersecurity solutions and having an incredibly talented team has played a major role in our continued growth."

"CRN's 2018 Fast Growth 150 list features companies that are growing in an ever-changing, challenging market," said Bob Skelley, CEO of The Channel Company. "As traditional solution providers are moving towards a services-focused business model, this extraordinary group have been able to successfully adapt; outperforming competitors and proving themselves as channel leaders. We are pleased to recognize these organizations and look forward to their continued success."

The complete 2018 Fast Growth 150 list is featured in the August issue of CRN and can be viewed online at www.crn.com/fastgrowth150.

Mason Public Schools and the City of Mason Collaborate on Shared Office Space Municipality and school district engage in unique service model

Mason Public Schools (MPS) and the City of Mason have demonstrated true regional cooperation by entering into a partnership to share resources and office space. MPS has recently moved its administrative staff into offices within Mason City Hall at 201 W. Ash Street. This partnership is unique to the mid-Michigan area. City and school district administration are excited about the opportunities and possibilities this arrangement will create. The City of Mason and MPS agreed to a 10-year lease for MPS to be located within City Hall.

Mason's City Hall was built for more employees than the City anticipates having in the next 10-15 years. Better utilization of City Hall will maximize space and reduce overhead cost, while ensuring more tax dollars serve the residents of Mason and the students of Mason Public Schools. Collaborating with joint office space demonstrates a commitment from both parties to use tax payer dollars efficiently and create a positive environment in Mason. Both organizations are now able to share resources including conference rooms, parking lots, utilities, etc. Parents and community members will have easy access to school administration and city services with both organizations located under one roof.

The partnership makes fiscal and operational sense for both organizations. By relocating MPS administration, it allows for renovations and new construction to begin at the Harvey Education Center (HEC). Additionally, it will allow the HEC to better serve Mason students as an early childhood and kindergarten building when construction is complete.

"After passing the bond last fall, the MPS Board of Education decided it made sense to move the administrative offices out of the Harvey Education Center to make room for additional programming for Mason's youngest students. Mason City Manager, Deb Stuart and Mason City Council worked hard to come up with a plan to make this collaboration work for both organizations. The City of Mason staff has been a great partner to us and we look forward to finding other ways to maximize our resources," said Ronald Drzewicki, Ed.S., superintendent, Mason Public Schools.

Tire Collection Results:

Thanks to the response from Ingham County residents and a dedicated team of volunteers, the Ingham Conservation District collected nearly 1,300 unwanted tires on June 23rd. Responsible disposal and recycling of unwanted tires helps reduce harmful mosquito breeding sites and environmental pollution. This event was made possible through a MDEQ Scrap Tire Grant and with the support of the Ingham County Fairgrounds. Thank you for participating!

Sunflower Learning Center

The Ingham Conservation District had a wonderful opportunity to talk to the Sunflower House Youth Garden Club on July 11th about water quality and conservation. They also got to see the new rain barrels they've installed there in action. The kids are using the water collected in the barrels to water their new flower and vegetable garden located behind the historic Pink Schoolhouse in Mason. This effort was led by the Mason Sycamore Creek Garden Club with support from the Mason community. Learn more about the adult and youth Garden Clubs and their events on their Facebook page.

LCC - MASON JEWETT CAMPUS by Mark Bathurst ([email protected])

Every year the Boeing Corporation publishes its Outlook for pilot, aircraft maintenance technician (AMT) and cabin crew (flight attendants) demand for the next 20 years. This is considered the seminal industry study and is widely used and quoted by government, industry and educators alike. Based on previous years' studies, it should come as no surprise that the just-published 2018 version forecasts a significant shortage in all three categories.

Quoting from the Boeing study: "As new generation airplanes become more prominent in the global fleet, advances in airplane technology will drive an increased need for technicians skilled in avionics, composites, and digital troubleshooting."

"Mobile and distance learning solutions are becoming increasingly popular as a flexible alternative to traditional classroom instruction, and new technologies such as augmented reality are being tested as a way to improve engagement and knowledge retention. As airlines continually invest to improve the quality and efficiency of their operations, new training curriculums and methodologies will need to be adopted to keep pace with innovation."

"The need for maintenance personnel is largest in the Asia Pacific region, which will require 257,000 new technicians. Airlines in North America will require 189,000, Europe 132,000, the Middle East 66,000, Latin America 55,000, Africa 28,000, and Russia / Central Asia 27,000."

Page 15: MASON in Motion UPDATEMASON'S 9 TH ANNUAL SUN DRIED MUSIC FEST IS ON AUGUST 24 - 26 The ninth annual Sun Dried Music Fest will return to downtown Mason on August 24, 25 & 26, 2018

Doing the math, that's a total of 754,000 new AMTs required worldwide to meet forecast demand. In the U.S., all AMT schools like LCC's graduate between 4,500 and 5,000 students per year. Assuming no change in graduation rates, that's 100,000 new AMTs in the next 20 years versus a demand for 189,000. Clearly something has to change to meet the demand.

As the article states, innovations in subject material taught, training methodologies and industry support for programs will have to occur. Schools will have to expand significantly to meet increased enrollment demand as the word spreads that the AMT career field needs new employees, that the jobs pay exceptionally well and that one can work anywhere in the world with an FAA A&P license. Our program this fall will be at capacity with new students, and based what we're seeing now, we expect to be full for the foreseeable future.

The demand for pilots is just as challenging as it is for AMTs. Boeing forecast states: "As the pilot labor supply has continued to tighten around the world, regional markets that have relied heavily on recruiting pilots from outside their home locations are increasingly seeking to recruit, train, and develop locally sourced pilots. Cadet programs that train aspiring pilots from zero flight hours to being an operationally ready first officer have increased in popularity as airlines look to provide career pathway programs and fill future pilot pipelines.

"Over the next 20 years, the Asia Pacific region will lead the worldwide growth in demand for pilots, with a requirement for 261,000 new pilots. North America will require 206,000, Europe 146,000, the Middle East 64,000, Latin America 57,000, Africa 29,000 and Russia/ Central Asia 27,000." In total, that's 635,000 new pilot positions.

Clearly the aviation industry shortage is real, it's here now and there are tremendous opportunities for individuals interested in a career in this exciting field.

• Break rooms to allow staff to recharge between caring for patients

• New, more direct access to the hospital's cafeteria

Construction of the new patient tower began in February 2017 and will be completed in August. Henry Ford Allegiance Health's next construction project will involve the expansion of the front entrance of the hospital to provide a more welcoming environment in the lobby area and enhance way-finding-allowing patients, families and visitors to more easily navigate the enlarged hospital structure, including the newly built patient tower. "The updates to the hospital entrance will knit together both patient towers and allow for expanded space for our cardiovascular services on the first floor," said HFAH president and CEO Georgia Fojtasek. "We are making these important renovations with our patients in mind, and based on the input of our customers, staff and physicians, so that we can be sure we are meeting their needs." The front entrance renovation is expected to begin in the spring of 2019 and will take approximately 18 months to complete.

"LUNCH & LEAD" EVENT PROVIDES LEADERSHIP & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES Strategic goals of the Chamber include promoting membership, sponsorship, leadership, and fellowship. In past years, the Ambassadors Committee has invited new and prospective Chamber members to attend "Chamber 101" sessions to learn how to maximize Chamber benefits,

This past year, the Ambassadors Committee has reworked the sessions to become "Lunch and Lead" noontime sessions at the Chamber office, limited to 12 people each. These are now quite popular. Lunch will be provided at the FREE session starting at Noon and the actual program will be from 12:15 to 12:45 PM. We're now looking for sponsors to defray the cost of lunch. In-kind contributions are welcome! The next "Lunch & Lead" is scheduled for Thursday, September 20sh and another identical session will be on Thursday, November 15th. For more information about these sessions or to reserve a spot in either one, please contact the Chamber office or any Chamber Ambassador.

THERE'S A PLACE FOR YOU ON CHAMBER COMMITTEES The Chamber's Board of Directors relies on many committees to plan, implement, and evaluate programs and activities during the year. Each committee depends on volunteers like you to contribute time and energy to help make every activity a value for Chamber members. Contact the Chamber office to get in on the action! Ad hoc committees meet as necessary, usually only three or four times a year. Standing committees meet monthly and make their reports to the Board of Directors. Four of these standing committees and their chairpersons and secretaries are: Ambassadors Committee - Mike Waltz, Mason Kiwanis Club & Jeff Haueter, Mason A&W -- The Ambassadors Committee helps members get the most value from their Chamber membership by coordinating networking events, sponsoring ribbon cuttings to bring attention to business milestones, and by providing a variety of additional opportunities to mentor new and current members. They oversee all of the Chamber's networking events, for which there are several ad hoc committees. Economic Development Committee - Cheryl Benjamin, Dart Container & Ron Drzewicki, Mason Public Schools -- The Economic Development Committee seeks out opportunities for business growth in the Mason area to create value for our entire business community. They maintain a list of available commercial space, identify and help resolve issues that may inhibit business growth, and provide community information to prospective business partners to promote economic growth. Hometown USA Committee - Debbie Shattuck, Maple Street Mall & Jamie Robinson, Darrell's & Bestsellers -- The Hometown USA Committee has an overall objective of highlighting the value of the Mason area and Mason area businesses through supporting the marketing and promotional activities of members. Organizing group advertising programs, assisting with marketing planning, promoting buying locally, and much more -- are all activities aimed at bringing more business to the Mason area and keeping resident's dollars close to home. They oversee all of the Chamber's community events, for which there are several ad hoc committees. Membership Services Committee - Ian Richardson, Doberman Technologies & Scott Ring, MSU Federal Credit Union, The Membership Services Committee recommends new Chamber member services and enhances the value of membership by providing opportunities for businesses to become more efficient and effective. The committee looks for new services and benefit programs that add value to Chamber membership. They organize and work on the annual MACC Raffle and other fundraisers that provide essential funding for creating value in our community.

Final Note:

Continuing a 46-year tradition, the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce publishes its "MASON in Motion" printed and mailed newsletter near the end of each month. This hard-copy newsletter has information about Chamber events and programs, new Chamber members, news from member businesses and organizations, and more - in a short four-page format. The several insert pages included in the newsletter each month are designed to be removed for easy sharing or posting within a business or organization. For this reason, the Chamber has decided to continue distributing this newsletter in the conventional manner with no opt-out. This also maintains value for limited advertising. Sponsorships that include a benefit of a newsletter insert are just $100 per insertion to reach 450 key decision-makers in the Mason area. This newsletter is mailed to all contact people for Chamber members, Chamber volunteers, and select stakeholders. A .pdf copy of the newsletter is also available to all the same day it is delivered by the post office at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org. Deadline is the 20th of the month for all submissions. Items are included as space is available and submissions are edited for space and consistency of the publication. Since August of 2006, the Chamber also publishes a mid-month "MASON in Motion UPDATE" newsletter electronically. This e-mailed newsletter is forwarded to all who have submitted their e-mail addresses to the Chamber, provided they are associated with a Chamber member, are a Chamber volunteer, or are a select stakeholder. A link to the archive on the website for the .pdf copies of the printed and mailed "MASON in Motion" newsletter is included in the UPDATE. A .pdf copy of this UPDATE newsletter is also available to all at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org under the "Newsletters" tab. Deadline is the 10th of the month for all UPDATE submissions. All items submitted are included, subject to minor editing for publication consistency. It is the intention of the Chamber to limit broadcast e-mails to those who have e-mail addresses submitted to the Chamber to 24 times per year at most. Of course, those who are Chamber leaders and volunteers get much more frequent information e-mailed to them.
