Summary, Alert Examples and In-game Tracking

The Nature of the Baseball Audience

Below are quarter-hour household ratings from a May Orioles vs Mariners baseball game and a September Nationals vs Mets game.

Orioles vs SEA Nationals vs NYM

* Indicates a quarter hour with a MASN Mobile Alert.

The quarter-hour ratings fluctuations documented above are typical of most MASN baseball broadcasts, with viewers “surfing” in and out of the game.

The purpose of MASN’s Mobile Alert program is to counteract this audience churn with teases that bring fans/viewers to their television sets to watch Orioles and Nationals broadcasts.

MASN’s mobile alert program has consistently grown Orioles and Nationals in-game ratings for the network since 2011. Without a doubt, it has been MASN’s most cost-effective marketing tool

For games we tracked in 2011, MASN in-game mobile alerts improved household ratings in a range from: o +13% to +60% for Orioles o +13% to +65% for Nationals

For games we tracked in 2012, mobile alerts improved HH ratings in a range: o +22% to +179% (Sept) for Orioles o +22% to +167% (Sept) for Nationals

For games we sampled in 2013, ratings increases ranged from: o +22% to +50% for Orioles o +25% to +70% for Nationals

* note: these ranges omit alerts announcing when a rain-delay was over, and games

Recent History

In 2014 and 2015, MASN’s Alert program began to face a series of challenges: o Increased expense to accommodate…

Greater number of subscribers Technology and mobile

partnerships required to provide fastest delivery of alerts

o Increased regulation under TCPA Double opt-ins for new subscribers A mandatory re-opt-in program for

those who subscribed prior to 2013 o The latter has dramatically impacted

MASN’s mobile alert subscriber base: 67, 500 (August 2015) 39, 700 (October 2015)

For games we tracked in 2014, alert ratings increases ranged from: o +8.5% to +50% for Orioles o +25% to +55% for Nationals

For 2015, we broke the season down in two sections: o Pre re-opt-in o Post re-opt-in (September 14th)

Pre the re-opt-in event, MASN in-game alerts impacted ratings in a range from: o -21% to +66% for Orioles o – 29% to +58% for Nationals

Post re-opt-in, MASN in-game alerts impacted ratings in a range from: o -6% to +25% for Orioles o – 29% to + 47% for Nationals

This drop in alert impact since the re-opt-in event is further confirmed by game ratings.

MASN Alerts: The Challenge for 2016

1. Recapture subscribers/followers o Social Media o On-air o Geo Fencing o Contesting o Promotion

2. Energize/maximize the tune-in/viewing activity of existing subscribers o More alerts/aggressive o Be “Strategic” o Better written alerts o Daily/weekly tracking

Issues and Opportunities

Frequency of Alerts Context: In 2015, Phizzle-related budget/cost concerns were part of the equation that determined the average number of in-game alerts. For 2016, that is no longer the case.

o (Only) When game action calls for it, a series of well-spaced alerts increases and maintains ratings (a cumulative effect). Example: During an Orioles/Red Sox game, we sent out 3 warranted alerts in a 50-minute period. Ratings rose from 5.0 to 7.07 (41.5%), while households increased by 22,000.

Too many innings between alerts Example: A June Nationals/Braves game. Even with Fister limiting Atlanta to 4 hits (7-innings), and the Nats scoring 7 runs on 12 hits, there were ZERO alerts after the 2nd inning until the end of the game. The result? The game averaged a 2 rating, -22% below the season average.

Early game alerts (when warranted) The first quarter-hour of every Orioles or Nationals game is the lowest rated quarter hour. A game-action specific first or early-inning alert can raise ratings from a 2.85 to a 4.22 (Orioles/NYY 9/9). A first inning alert for a Nationals/Braves game increased ratings from .93 to 1.47 (+58%), while early inning alerts improved ratings for a West Coast Nats game from 1.31 to 2.30 (+75%) and a Nats game competing against Redskins football from 1.60 to 2.96 (+85%).

Late Inning Alerts HUTs (households using television) grow as the evening progresses, peaking around 10PM. Below are the HUT levels for Baltimore one evening in July 2015.

7PM 40.9 HUT 7:30PM 42.9 HUT 8PM 46.3 HUT 9PM 47.6 HUT 9:30PM 50.0 HUT 10PM 54.8 HUT 10:30PM 52.4 HUT

When late inning game alerts run, MASN ratings benefit from this larger audience base. Examples:

o A 7th inning alert, with the O’s losing, but threatening to score increased quarter-hour HH ratings from 6.27 to 7.16

o A 7th inning alert, promoting the Nationals taking a 1-0 lead increased quarter-hour HH ratings from 2.43 to 3.36.

o An 8th inning alert, promoting the Nats had runners in scoring position improved game ratings from 3.83 to 4.31

o When we finally alerted the audience to Max Scherzer’s second no-hitter of the season, two late-inning alerts raised ratings from 1.98 to 2.92.

Question: How do we write late-inning alerts when there are no significant highlights? We “count down” to the win.

Idea: “O’s 6 outs away from 5-3 win over Sox. Don’t miss the victory celebration on MASN2.”

Historic Games, Missed Action o The historic 26-hit Orioles game versus Oakland. No alerts were

sent from the 3rd inning until the end of the game, though 12 runs were scored.

o The historic 8-HR Orioles game versus Philadelphia. An alert was sent out for Machado’s HR in the first inning. Another alert was sent after the 4th inning – summarizing the score. That’s it.

o For Scherzer’s second no-hitter of the season, we did not mention the pending/possible feat until AFTER the 7th inning.

Follow-up on Teases o On July 25th, we sent out a “bases loaded” alert, but didn’t send

an alert when Davis hit a grand slam with those bases loaded.

Timeliness o An Orioles/TOR alert summarizes post 6th inning activity,

rather than sending out an alert(s) that timely teased Davis’ and/or Wieter’s back-to-back HRs.

Back from Rain Delays o Examples of copy from last season:

Mariners-Orioles has resumed in 3rd inning on MASN. Braves-Nationals is under way at Nats Park. Tune in to

MASN2. Tonight's Cubs-Nationals game has resumed. Tune in to

MASN. o Returns from rain delays should be thought of/written in a vein

similar to the “tease” copy in line-up pre-game alert. o If it’s the start of a game, look for positive team/player trends. o If it’s mid-game, re-set game highlights for Orioles or Nationals.

See if Birds can take lead on MASN.

Writing & Missed Opportunities

Write with urgency! Ask for the order! Too often we’re not. Examples of passive writing: o “Live game coverage of O's-Rays on

MASN.” o “Check out Phillies-Orioles on MASN.” o “See if they can add insurance runs on

MASN2.” o “See if Birds can battle back from 6-4

deficit on MASN2.”

Approach we should be using: o “Catch the comeback. Turn to MASN 2

– Now.” o “Don’t miss another HR. Turn on

MASN.”

Promote big moments o On July 25th, we sent out a bases loaded

alert, but did not send an alert when Davis hit a grand slam.
