HAJJ – Step-By-Step Guide This is a basic guide for Hajj rituals – which Hajj performers find very useful. Umrah information is not included.

It is important to learn in more detail from scholars before setting off.

DAY 1 – 8th Zil Hijjah (Yawm At-Tarwiyah)

Before Fajr Salaah

① Make ghusl, pray two rakaat (Sunnah) and wear the sheets of Ihraam.

② Recite Talbiyah after making the intention of Hajj.

③ If  you  have  intention  of  performing  Sa'ee  of  Hajj  then  perform  a  Nafl  Tawaaf  before  Sa’ee, followed by the two

rakaat Wajib of Tawaaf with Ramal and Idhtibah. Sa'ee for Hajj (Wajib) is permissible before Hajj but it is preferable

to perform this Sa'ee of Hajj after Tawaaf Ziyaarah for a Mutammatti`. ④ Leave for Mina after sunrise. (But nowadays due to the vast number of Hujjaj, the Muallims start to locate everyone

to their tents in Mina starting from late after Esha with coaches arriving in Mina throughout the entire night).

⑤ Fajr (if you arrive early in Mina), ⑥ Zuhr, ⑦ Asar, ⑧ Maghrib, ⑨ Esha.

DAY 2 – 9th of Zil Hijjah (Yawm Al-Arafah) in Arafah

① Fajr. (Pray in Mina).

② Leave Mina for Arafat after sunrise.

③ Pray Zuhr and Asar on their prescribed times in the tents. Zuhr and Asar will only be prayed together at Masjid

Namira. It is recommended to stay in the tents rather than wasting this precious time by getting lost and trying to

find your way back. Remain engaged in Dua until departure.

④ Cannot leave Arafah before sunset.

⑤ Leave for Muzdalifah after sunset without praying Maghrib.

Muzdalifah

⑥ Pray Maghrib and Esha at Esha time with one adhaan and one takbeer. Pray both of the fardh Salaah first then the

remaining of Maghrib then Esha.

⑦ Collect 49 or 70 pebbles at Muzdalifah and a few extra in case some miss the target or fall out. Wash them (in case it

is dry mud) and keep them safe.

⑧ Stay overnight in Muzdalifah (Sunnah until Subh Sadiq) and make Dua etc.

⑨ Pray Fajr and leave for Mina after making wuqoof which is Wajib after Subh Sadiq until sunrise.

DAY 3 – 10th of Zil Hijjah in Mina

① Rami (Wajib) of the Big Shaytaan. Masnoon time is from sunrise till zawal. It is permissible after zawal until Maghrib

and makrooh after Maghrib, but not makrooh for the elderly, sick and women.

② Stop recital of Talbiyah after pelting the first pebble.

③ Qurbani of Hajj (Wajib).

④ Shave or trim the hair (Sunnah in Mina). The head must be shaved even if there is no hair on the head.

⑤ Now you are free from the restrictions of Ihraam and can dress into normal sewn clothes and the head can be

covered but sexual relations between the husband and wife are not permissible until after Tawaaf Ziyaarah.

⑥ All Salaahs on time.

⑦ Leave for Makkah. Makkah

Islamic Will – Why do I need one? Writing and preparing a Will is undoubtedly one of the most important things you need to do especially when living in a non-Muslim country to ensure that upon death, your wealth and assets are distributed according to Shar’iah and not the law of the land. The Holy Quran mentions the importance of writing a Will in in Surah Nisa, Chapter 4 and Verse 7: “There is a share for men and a share for women from what is left by parents and those nearest related, whether the property be small or large – a share made fard”. In a hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 51, Number 1), it is said: “It is not rightful for a Muslim person, if he has anything to bequeath (give) that he sleeps two consecutive nights without having his Will written with him”. However the duty on you is not simply to write a Will but also to ensure the Will is fair to those you leave behind and who are entitled to a fixed share for example your parents, your spouse and/or your children (legal heirs). You must give them their due share otherwise: “A man and woman makes ibadat of Allah Ta’ala  for  60 years but when the time of death comes, they make a Will that causes harm to their heirs. Therefore Jahannam becomes compulsory on them”  (narrated  by  Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (RA). You can give up to 1/3 of your estate to anyone other than your legal heirs but this is not obligatory. You must not however exceed the 1/3 quota as you would then be eating into their fixed share and that will be harmful to them. Finally a Will helps reflect on sensitive matters such as funeral arrangements, paying fidya and appointing trustees or guardianship for your children and planning your inheritance tax liability. To make your Will or to find out more, please contact Naheem Razwan from NR Legal Solicitors on [email protected] or call 020 85091681.
