NAIDOC Celebrations

NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2019 theme - VOICE TREATY TRUTH - acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in decision-making in Australia’s democracy. The theme also aims at highlighting our various First Nations’ desires for lasting and effective agreements such as Treaties - which cannot be achieved unless we have a shared, truthful understanding of the history. Here at MPS we want • our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to see themselves, their identities and their cultures reflected in the curriculum to build their self-esteem, confidence and efficacy of self; and • all our children to be aware of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, to engage in reconciliation, respect and recognition of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. The history of our First Peoples is the history of all of us, of all of Australia, and we need to own it – only then we can move forward together. What a wonderful day we had on Thursday celebrating NAIDOC Week. The children participated in a number of activities throughout the day, observed a smoking ceremony performed by members of Doonooch Dancers and enjoyed a NAIDOC assembly at the end of the day. Our local Mayor, Mr Ron Hoenig presented the school with a framed speech he delivered in Parliament, praising the schools ANZAC Day assembly and we were delighted to celebrate the finished work of Mr William Gordon (and his family). Mr Gordon painted the beautiful snake on the back wall of the school. Thank you Mr Gordon. I would like to recognise the wonderful contributions our Indigenous families make to our school and thank Ms Russell for not only organising this year’s NAIDOC events but for all she does to promote Aboriginal perspectives in our school.

National Assessment Program (Literacy and Numeracy) Results The National Assessment Program (Literacy and Numeracy) results, otherwise known as

NAPLAN were released to schools last week and individualised reports for all students in

Years 3 and 5 will arrive at the school this week. We will send these home as soon as we

have them. These results provide us with a snapshot of our students’ academic achieve-

ment as it was in May this year and allow us to look at each student’s strengths and are-

as for development. We are also provided with extensive data to enable school-wide

longitudinal analysis of our performance. This analysis informs our teaching practice and

school improvement initiatives. I will look forward to sharing this data and analysis with

the school community next term. If you would like to discuss your child’s results I

encourage you to contact their class teacher to make an appointment.

2020 Enrolments Do you have a child who turns five years of age before 31 July 2020 and will be ready to start school? We encourage all families with children starting school next year to contact the office as soon as possible to complete the enrolment paperwork. Please also spread the word to other local families interested in enrolling at our school that now is the time to work through this process. Now is the time to complete an Application for Enrolment form. You can do this by doing one of the following: • Picking up an application form from the office. • Emailing the school at [email protected] to request a form. • Downloading an Application to Enrol form from the school website at: https://mascot-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/contact-us.html

Our 2020 Kindergarten orientation dates have been set and are on our website. Our 2020 Kindergarten Orientation dates are 18 September (Playgroup Session), 13 November and 20 November (Flying Start Orientation Program). It is important that we have all enrolment applications well before these dates and by the end of term if possible.

Notes were sent home regarding the Australian Girls Choir (AGC). AGC is a top quality K-12 girls’ choir and a wonderful opportunity for our students.

AGC will be coming to Mascot Public School on Tues 17 Sept at 1pm to talk to and workshop with girls interested in joining the choir next year. The workshop will be held in the music room at lunchtime.

The two venues for AGC closest to Mascot are Waverley and Annandale. Classes are weekly on a

Saturday or after school, depending on the venue and the year level the girls are in.

Joining this choir is a whole year commitment. If your child is interested complete the note and AGC will send you further information.
