FEESThe fee for each course is included within the course description. Instructors in certain courses will collect supply fees to cover the cost of materials. Fees or credit card numbers must accompany mail reservations in order to be considered. Mail and fax registrations will automatically be accepted unless otherwise notified. LIFELONG LEARNER’S CARDCheektowaga Senior Citizens, age 60 years or older, are required to have a Lifelong Learner’s Card to receive a senior citizen discount. This card entitles the owner to a discount on some classes. This discount can only be granted at the time of registration and only for courses taken by the individual whose name is on the card. Is College in your Future? If so, Erie Community College and Maryvale Community Education will be offering Pre-Collegiate Studies. These tuition free courses are designed to be fun and help you develop the skills you need to be successful in college. To be eligible for classes you must have a high school diploma or have recently taken the TASC. Hurry!!!! Class sizes are limited. PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS Maryvale Community Education is in-volved in a partnership with Erie Com-munity College to provide services to adults age 18 and over who are prepar-ing to attend college. Free classes in basic math and reading skills, TASC Prepara-tion and English for Speakers of Other Languages will be offered at Maryvale locations to adults who need to brush-up before enrolling at Erie Community Col-lege. Students who successfully complete the Pathways to Success program can be quickly enrolled in degree programs at Erie Community College. Classes are offered in the daytime and the evenings. Cardiovascular & Self Defense for WomenWhy take aerobics? Mandarin Kung Fu offers an intense cardiovascular workout with the added benefit of learning self defense. This course for women employs the animal movements of Mandarin Kung Fu. The class is structured for serious minded students interested in a good cardiovascular workout while learning basic self defense techniques. Cross Training with Mandarin Kung FuKung Fu is an excellent means of self defense. Some of the other benefits of traditional kung fu training are mental development, self esteem, stress management, cardio and physical fitness. Mandarin Kung Fu is an excellent way to cross train for other sports. Blocking, punching and kicking drills from solid stances develop flexibility, stronger leg muscles, upper body strength and increased reflexive abilities. Fencing for Beginners (Ages 10 to Adult) This course is an introduction to the Art of Classical Foil Fencing. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. It is a relaxed workout coupled with exposure to the historical origins of this exciting martial art. Great for developing physical agility and mental focus, fencing is also FUN! Ayurveda - The Science of Self HealingIn this practical class we will explore health and healing in relationship to the five elements: air, space, fire, water and earth. These elements exist in all matter, including the body and mind. A state of health exists when the body is in balance with nature. When the natural rhythms are out of balance this can cause disturbance in the body and the disease process can begin. Ayurveda works directly with individual constitution, diet and lifestyle providing a methodology to rebalance the body. Quilting - BargelloBargello embroidery is the inspiration for this quilting design. Several coordinated fabrics, which may be shades of one or a few fabrics, or a variety of fabrics which work together will create your unique and interesting design. This will most likely become a wall quilt. However, the size will be determined by the quilt maker. Materials needed will be discussed in the first class. Students will use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler to cut fabrics in class and use their sewing machines at home to work on the steps needed to complete this project. Personal Water Craft Boating Safety Course The Empire Safety Council’s Boating Safety Course meets New York State requirements for a Personal Water Craft (PWC) Boating Safety Course. It is intended to provide a comprehensive yet basic knowledge to acquaint you with safe and legal boating practices. The Boating Safety Course is an 8-hour instructor-led workshop which includes a student text-workbook, a new boating safety video and a 50 question multiple choice exam with an answer form. Satisfactory completion (40 correct answers) will earn you an official course completion certificate and may also earn you up to a 15% discount annually on your water craft insurance. Students will learn how to move, defend and attack using the basic fencing weapon - the foil - in the Classical French style. CANCELLATION INFORMATIONThe full fee will be refunded by check or credit (when paid with charge card) if classes are filled or cancelled. Personal request for cancellation must be made two full business days prior to the start of classes i.e. if the class begins on a Wednesday, cancellation must be made no later than the prior Friday. A $5.00 cancellation fee per class will be charged. Refund checks or credits may take up to 45 days to process. Registration fees will not be refunded for any reason after the first class begins.
