PROGRAM NOTES_________________Lauda: A Fanfare for Orchestra -- Daniel BaldwinHaving taught composition at Dordt College the past two plus years, I have had the distinct pleasure of working with the administrators of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra. As a result of that wonderful relationship, last spring I was approached to write a new fanfare for this concert to feature organist MaryLou Wielenga. This new fanfare, set in a simple ABA form, includes a setting of the hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, which is presented exclusively in the organ. Counter melodies and motifs are introduced throughout the work in the brass, woodwinds, and strings. They are tossed around the orchestra, culminating in a presentation set against the hymn. God is praised triumphantly through brilliant brass fanfares and sparkling woodwind flourishes, all grounded by organ hymn. Lauda is gratefully dedicated to MaryLou Wielenga and the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra-Christopher Stanichar, conductor.

Daniel Baldwin, 2019

Organ Concerto in B-Flat Major, Op.7, No. 1, HWV 306 -- George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) In the mid-1690’s, worshippers at the Marktkirche in Hanover may or may not have been aware that Sunday’s music was not being played by their organist, Friedrich Zachow. Zachow, renowned for indulging his “love of company and cheerful glass,” seems to have been perfectly content to cede the organ bench to his spectacularly gifted student: George Frideric Handel. Indeed, while travelling in Italy some years later, Handel met Domenico Scarlatti in a good-natured duel of keyboardists. Listeners judged Scarlatti’s harpsichord playing slightly better than Handel’s. But Handel’s organ playing was a clear favorite. In the 1730’s, Handel, by then an established success among London’s musical circles, returned to his roots as an organist. Performances of his oratorios included intermissions given over to a new genre: the organ concerto. Audiences delighted in Handel’s masterful skill at the instrument, and publisher John Walsh printed Handel’s opus 4, a set of six concerti. Following Handel’s death, Walsh released Handel’s opus 7, a collection of six further concerti composed during the 1740’s. The present concerto dates from 1740 and was first played at Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre on February 27th of that year. Its several movements include the indication that the organist may insert or improvise additional movements as desired. (Tonight’s performance includes the addition of a movement from one of Handel’s opus 4 concerti.) Remarkably and to what must have been the amazement of Handel’s audience, it also includes writing for the pedals! Though commonplace for continent organs, a pedal keyboard was an unheard-of marvel among British organ circles in Handel’s age. One imagines that the grace and agility with which Handel’s feet embellished the opening movement can only have left audiences in awe.

Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 78 “Organ Symphony” -- Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) "I have given to it everything I was able to give." - Camille Saint-Saëns, in reference to his Third Symphony

Acknowledged by Franz Liszt as the "second- best pianist in all Europe," Camille Saint-Saëns was a versatile musician excelling in many areas: a renowned composer, a virtuoso pianist, an organist skilled in both improvisations and composed repertoire, an accomplished conductor, and a respected scholar. Reception of his work was often tainted, however, by his cool demeanor. Whereas Liszt would swoon at the piano to great theatrical effect, Saint-Saëns remained perfectly still. Towards the end of his life, his acidic criticism of other composers (César Franck "wasn't French enough" for him and his thoughts on Claude Debussy do not bear polite discussion) won him few friends and ultimately gained him the reputation of a grumpy old conservative. The present symphony is Saint-Saëns's fifth (two others were withdrawn and never numbered) and final effort in the genre. Composed for the Royal Philharmonic Society, it premiered in 1886 with Saint-Saëns conducting. Its nickname reflects the unorthodox scoring of organ and orchestra together. The combination capitalizes on the late 19th century fashion for installing mammoth organs in concert halls as a point of municipal pride. This was, after all, La belle epoque, the generation that gave us the Eiffel Tower and the Exposition Universelle.
