News From the BoardSixteen Board members and our legal adviser Randy Reade attended the meeting on Monday February 6, 2012. A few items were discussed which resulted in the following:

• The board suggested that the conference committee reexamine the fee structure of the conference. A suggestion was made to add the option of a one-day registration. It will be brought to the attention of the conference committee.

• The board will continue to work with Dr. Mark Di Pinto to create collegiate chapters in Maryland.

• Suggestion to create an ad hoc committee to deal solely with website issues with our webmaster.

• Lori McCarthy will take over as Theory Chair next year and will work closely with Junko Takahashi. Possible revision of the Syllabus was discussed.

• Our legal adviser, Randy Reade will work closely with a by-law committee to create a dispute resolution process.

Spring is just around the corner, and many MSMTA events are ahead!

We started the year with the MSMTA Annual Conference, held on January 7-8 at the University of Maryland. Although attendance was slightly down this year, we have received many positive

comments from those who attended. The sessions presented by Randy Faber, Tony Caramia, Thomas Mastroianni, Bradford Gowen, Lori McCarthy and Nancy Roldan were both informative and inspiring. Many thanks to the conference committee members Carol Wolfe-Ralph, Marilyn Briant, Yoon Huh, Andrew Zatman, Ella Wu and Christine Couch, who worked tirelessly to make this event successful. Also thanks to Bonny Miller and Ingrid Mongini who came early Saturday morning to work at the registration. We are already thinking about next year’s conference, so if you have any suggestions or would like to be on the committee, please feel free to contact me.

The second event of the year was the Gertrude S. Brown Memorial Piano Concerto Competition and the Winners’ Concerts. In spite of a little setback due to icy conditions, event chair Hyun Park operated a smooth competition and memorable Winners’ Concerts with the Washington Conservatory Orchestra. We are so fortunate to have Hyun dedicated to our organization! So thank you!

The Spring is always a busy time of the year for us music teachers. I wish you the best and healthy spring!

Another delightful concert of original music was held at our MSMTA Conference on January 8, 2012 at the Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts, University of Maryland. Twenty-seven students played their composition/improvisations to a large and appreciative audience. The purpose of this event is to provide a venue where students and teachers can present their compositions/improvisations and to encourage students to compose and improvise. From the composition titles, we were planting trees, observing summer storms and winter winds, heard about dancing butterflies, were “puzzled”, and even had Ice Variations.

The composers received a printed booklet of their compositions, each performer received a certificate, and a biographical sketch of each student was included in the program notes. After the concert, a reception was held to honor the students.

Joanna Greenwood and Ann Matteson chaired this event. Participating teachers were: Joanna Greenwood, Edwina Hunter, Ye Sung Lee, Jamie Fan Pasho, Martha Sallet, Theresa Shykind, Helen Weems, Rosanne White and Deborah White-Bondhus.

Teachers who might be interested in having their students compose/improvise should start thinking about preparation for next year’s event which will take place during the 2013 MSMTA Conference.

New elemeNtary dma award For Grades 1 – 5

Eligibility: 350 points are required. At least 4 events must be entered within 5 years.

Participation in the following 4 events is required. Additional event is teacher/student’s choice of any MSMTA Student Activity.

1) Keyboard Musicianship Exam – 2 years required; up to 50 points each year possible.

2) Theory Test Program – 2 years required; up to 50 points each year possible.

3) Local Association recitals or competitions – 2 performances required. 30 points each.

4) School music program – 1 performance required; may be instrumental or choral. 30 points for each participation.

5) Other events may be any of MSMTA’s student activities, as needed for additional points. Up to 50 points possible.

If a student’s instrument is other than the piano, participation in Strings Plus, String Solo, or the Chamber Music competition may be substituted for the Keyboard Musicianship Exam requirement.

In order to earn 350 points, student will need to participate in some of the 4 events more often than the minimum needed to qualify. Criteria for scoring will be the same as for the Junior and Senior DMA awards.

STUDENTS CURRENTLY IN THE 5th GRADE MAY FULFILL ALL THE REQUIREMENTS IN THEIR 5TH SCHOOL YEAR. This applies only to students in the 5th grade in the 2011-2012 school year.

Award will be an engraved plaque with a medallion.

Plaques will be sent directly to the teacher for presentation to the student. TEACHERS: PLEASE SEND ALL CANDIDATE NAMES AT THE SAME TIME TO SAVE POSTAGE.

This award will encourage and motivate the younger students to participate in our activities and continue their piano studies to reach their goal.

MCDANIEL ORCHESTRA CAMP 2012

Announcing the Eighth Annual Summer Orchestra Camp Including Piano Studies

The McDaniel Orchestra Camp with Piano Studies experience provides a unique opportunity to join with other dedicated 12-18 year old music students for a week of intense study and fun in beautiful Westminster Maryland on the McDaniel College campus.

Campers have the choice of orchestra or piano studies. The Philharmonic Orchestra for intermediate to

a d v a n c e d students and the Symphony Orchestra for beginning to intermediate-level students are available based on auditions. Piano studies will focus on sight reading, piano ensemble playing, and polishing repertoire for recital performance. Pianists should be at the intermediate-advanced level and should come with several recital-ready pieces.

The camp is staffed by Director Lynn Fleming, Conductors Jason Love and Mary Poling, Pianist David Kreider and a cadre of highly qualified instrumental instructors and counselors. The faculty is augmented by guest artists who will be heard in concert and will present master classes. Last year’s guest artists included Jeffrey Sharkey, Alison Wells, Jonathan Carney, and Ruth Carney

The 2012 Gertrude S. Brown Memorial Piano Concerto Competition was made more challenging than in previous years because of the weather. In the end, we had to cancel Saturday rehearsals of the competition as our new venue, Howard Community College (HCC), was closed in the morning. The competition on Sunday, however, proceeded without much impact from the lack of rehearsals -- it is a tribute to our students’ teachers who have prepared them well, as well as our accompanists who did a wonderful job making students comfortable to perform without a chance to rehearse beforehand. The competition had a highest-record participation with a total of 216 entries from 42 teachers. The quality of performance was excellent, which made the job of our judges difficult in choosing 24 winners in all (both Team I and Team II), as well as alternates and honorable mentions -- 64 awards in total. The Horowitz Center of HCC was well received by all participants, with high quality pianos and clean and comfortable surroundings. We expect to continue to use this venue for years to come. I would like to thank Kristina Suter, faculty at HCC and our member, who has given invaluable assistance to make this event go smoothly from the beginning, through the weather contingency, as well as the behind-the-scenes help throughout the competition day. I also want to thank Bok Hwa Kim, a member of the Concerto Committee, for her advice and help in many ways. Most of all, my congratulations go to all participants and winners of awards and my appreciation goes to our accompanists, judges and all teachers and parents.

The winners of the competition will be performing with the Washington Conservatory Orchestra (Conductor A. Scott Wood) on February 11th in Smith Theatre at Howard Community College.

The concert is open to the public and free of charge. All in our community are urged to come and hear the winners’ performances as a way to giving them encouragement. The Team I concert will be held at 2 PM and Team II at 4:30 PM.

memBer NewsHelen Smith tarchalski has been named regional leader for the mid-atlantic region of the Carnegie Hall royal Conservatory achievement program. Helen is also continuing in her role as Associate Editor for Clavier Companion Magazine. Her two-part interview with award-winning Liszt historian Alan Walker appeared in the September/October and November/December issues. Part I can be read on the magazine’s website at claviercompanion.com.

FCMTA has a busy winter ahead. February 11th marks the first student event of the year with the MSMTA Keyboard Musicianship Testing. Approximately 25 students from Frederick County will be testing. We thank Erin Runkles for stepping forward to chair and organize this event. We are anticipating a successful Sonatina/Sonata Festival on March 17th. Our 6th annual event, programmed as a small recital, a piano adjudicator evaluates the students’ performances. Two students from Frederick County enjoyed performing at the Composer’s Circle at January’s MSMTA conference at College Park. Several teachers attended the state conference, and a few plan to attend the MTNA conference

Since our last report, GCMTA has enjoyed an overly successful “Outreach Recital” held at a senior living facility, an overly interesting experience with our Keyboard Exams, and a nicely successful set of Festivals. Our Friends and Family event included students, parents, and friends as performers. Our Tweets and Twitters Festival allowed for pieces on any theme but required a written “Tweet” describing the piece or a feeling the piece produced in the performer. Some of the “Tweets” were wonderfully imaginative. And our members have enjoyed our winter meeting and potluck with spouses invited. Upcoming are another “Outreach Recital”, our center for the MSMTA Theory Exams, the Ensemble and Chamber Festival held jointly with Greater Laurel, our Judged Recital, our all day “Flute Event “- mostly competition, and a Master Class featuring Bok Hwa Kim as our master teacher. The busy season has arrived! Cheers to all,

We all had a nice winter break and are now in the busy mode of preparing for the late winter and spring events, both in Howard County and at the state level. Our very next event is the annual Theme and Ensemble Festival, chaired by Kathryn Stansbery on March 4th, where the optional theme this year is “Bells.” This recital is a favorite of our students and always well attended. It is fun for the students wishing to perform pieces following a specific theme and beneficial to our students performing ensembles to help prepare them for our local Ensemble Competition, chaired by David Kuperstein and scheduled for March 18th, as well as that hosted by MSMTA. This year we have one theory center, which will take place on March 4th as well. All three of these events are being held at Howard Community College in Columbia.

Carroll County Music Teachers Association held their annual banquet and business meeting on January 14, 2012 at the home of Joan MacDonald. In attendance were Jane McIlvain, Joan MacDonald, Charlotte Young, Arlene Bullock, Carole Gauthier, Carolyn Dinst, and David Kreider. The business meeting centered around the new CCMTA advertising flyer which Don Myers, manager of Stu’s Music Shop, offered to print for us. Also discussed was income generated by the successful Music at the Mall in December and the Costumed Recital, a fun event for students always held near Halloween. Upcoming events include the CCMTA’s Solo and Ensemble Festival on February 25th, and the master class held at McDaniel College on March 24th for which Thomas Mastroianni will be the clinician. Following the business meeting, a scrumptious dinner buffet provided by members was enjoyed by all.

The Music Teachers Association of Charles County was excited to present “Making Music Together” on Saturday, February 4. Continuing the tradition of making collaborative music a priority, students performed in groups of two or more. There were two recitals, with a total of 100 people in attendance between the two. In January, we held a workshop called “Hosting a Summer Music Camp” presented by Flute Teacher and Retired Air Force Band Member Lucy Snell. The workshop was informative and creative, answering many questions about what it takes to conduct a music camp. MTACC is excited to be the recipient of a grant by the Charles County Arts Alliance. Thanks again to Lucy Snell, our fine treasurer, for successfully applying for this grant. We look forward to expanding both Teacher Programs and Student Events as a result of this grant.

Our members were treated to a great morning of performances at our December 13th meeting. P e r f o r m e r s included Li-Ly Chang, Cynthia Cathcart, Immanuela Gruenberg, Michiko Yurko and yours truly followed by a lovely potluck luncheon. It was nice to take a moment to enjoy some wonderful music during the busy holiday season.

Five judged recitals were held at the Montgomery College, Rehearsal Hall on December 11th. It was a delightful afternoon full of wonderful music, including both piano solos and piano duets. The awarding of 16 trophies and 21 honorable mention ribbons was a fabulous ending to the day. There were 39 participants from 18 studios. We were honored and grateful to have Sidney Yin and Dr. Daniel Lau as our judges.

MCMTA held intermediate/advanced recitals on December 4th. There were six recitals with a total of 61 performers from 13 studios. MCMTA also held an Elementary Recital on December 10th at Montgomery College. There were 49 students from 12 studios in two recitals.

February promises to be busy with judged recitals on February 12th and the Festival of Music on February 26th, whose theme is “Salute to the B’s”: music by composers whose last name begins with B!

We welcome all MSMTA members to join us for our general meetings. Upcoming meetings will be on February 14th, March 20th, April 10th and May 8th at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, MD. Sincerely,

The Anne Arundel Music Teachers Association annual Fall at the Mall Music Marathon, one of our biggest student events of the year, took place at the Annapolis Mall (Westfield Shopping Center). Chairpersons Ellen Winner and Suzanne Hilton, along with Ellen’s husband John, again did a herculean job producing recitals throughout the day, and provided beautiful fall decorations as a backdrop for the seven-foot Yamaha grand piano.

The inauguration of our Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program testing center on December 5 was met with excitement and enthusiasm by our students, their parents, and the community. Music critic Tim Smith of The Baltimore Sun covered the event as a front page lead story! The article included four photos of our students in the print issue and eight in the online edition. More students are

gearing up for the May assessments, which will again take place at Anne Arundel Community College on May 22.

Also in December, we hosted our annual Holiday Festival, chaired by Katya Merchant. The event, which took place in the Ginger Cove retirement community, is part of our ongoing effort to give back to the community. Ginger Cove residents and relatives and friends of our music students enjoyed three recitals of holiday seasonal music. It was encouraging to see an array of different instruments, solos, and ensembles. The staff at Ginger Cove showed their appreciation by asking us to return for the next holiday season! Parents and other relatives of students were thankful for the opportunity to see loved ones be part of such a positive community event. Students, assisted by their teachers, greatly benefited from the experience of sharing holiday cheer through music as well as having motivation to practice extra at a very busy time of year.

On Saturday, February 4th, the Saul Roas Scholarship Competition was successfully held with an enrollment twice that of 2010. The Level I (Intermediate) winner was Martin Torrey, student of Mei-Yu Lin and Honorable Mention was Jessica Yao, student of Dr. Hui-Yen Chang. The Level II (Early Advanced) winner was Angella Lee (Chang) and the Honorable Mentions were Joshua Gardner (Blanchard) and Emily Pung (Lin). In Level III (Advanced) the winner was Ruth Alonzo, student of Patricia Blanchard, and Honorable Mention was Joyce Yang who studies with Dr. Chang. The three winners will be performing at the Broad Creek Music Festival Concert of Winners on March 11th in John Addison Hall at Harmony Hall in Fort Washington. Jeffery Beaudry was the adjudicator. This event features all Latin American music and is open to the students of any teacher who is an MSMTA member.

Linda Head reports that 92 students performing solos and 17 duet teams are enrolled in the Broad Creek Music Festival to be held on Sunday, March 4th, at the Prince George’s Community College.
