TAX SALE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW In March, the complete list of properties eligible for tax sale is published twice
in newspapers. And in the first week of April, counties begin mailing a second
tax sale notice. The annual tax sale then begins in the third week of May.
STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO AVOID TAX SALE:
Be on the lookout for Final Bills from your local finance department
Take all efforts you can to pay down your property taxes
Take advantage of programs like the Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit,
water credits, and affordability programs offered by your water company
If you need help accessing these credits, contact the Maryland Benefits
Center at 855-444-4998, open Monday-Friday from 9 am - 5 pm.
MARYLAND HOME IMPROVEMENT
COMMISSION (MHIC)
If you’re looking to hire a contractor to work on your home, check in with
the Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC). If a contractor
does not complete the work on your home as discussed or the quality of
their work is poor, you can contact MHIC to have them investigate the
contractor in question. The Commission also has a fund where you can
be compensated for the financial losses you may have experienced as
a result of the poor workmanship.
Go to: dllr.state.md.us/license/mhic/ for more information.

REVERSE MORTGAGES
Reverse mortgages are loans that let older homeowners take out
money to help pay for your mortgage. Rather than you paying the
lender, you actually receive money from the lender, but as you re-
ceive more money, the loan amount and interest charged will contin-
ue to increase. The value of your home will also decrease as the
loan balance increases.
If you’re considering a reverse mortgage, pause and review all of
your options and financial situation. The Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) has reverse mortgage counselors you
can speak to about your options.
You can reach a counselor at (800) 569-4287.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has a helpful
discussion guide that goes over many different factors of reverse
mortgages. You can look through it online here:

mortgage-discussion-guide.pdf
FILE A CONSUMER COMPLAINT
If you are having a dispute with a business in Maryland, you can
contact the Consumer Hotline at the office of the Attorney General to
file a complaint. You can also file a Health Care Complaint if you are
experiencing issues with your health plan refusing to cover a medi-
cal procedure or if you need help resolving a billing issue with a
health care provider who is sending you notices about a debt.
You can submit your complaint online or print the form out and mail
it in to the Attorney General’s office. To learn more about how to file
a complaint, visit http://www.marylandattorneygeneral.gov/Pages/
CPD/Complaint.aspx.
