He will be performing “america the Beautiful” on Jim McKay Maryland Million Day

tenor anthony Kearns took the american television audience by storm in 1999 as the youngest member of the wildly popular musical group, the Irish tenors with whom he has 10 cDs and five PBS specials. their cDs have gone Gold, Platinum and Double Platinum. american critics hailed Kearns as perhaps the most likely of the three (Irish tenors) to “achieve the level of tenor super stardom now enjoyed by Pavarotti and a handful of other singers.”

Mr. Kearns said his appearance at the Jim McKay Maryland Million Day combines two of his great passions: music and horses. “I have a great fondness for horses which goes back to my childhood”.

Kearns hails from county Wexford, Ireland – home of famed Irish horse trainer aidan o’Brien – and many great horse breeders, trainers and jockeys. that’s where he “gained an appreciation of horses and the horse industry,” he said.

Mr. Kearns has an international solo career, delighting audiences with performances that draw from a wide variety of opera, folk music, classical and Broadway songs and international favorites. He released his first solo cD, “With a Song in My Heart,” last fall.

Mr. Kearns frequently performs at charity concerts, on television, and with the finest symphony orchestras and opera houses in the world. In 2012, he sang at the 137th Preakness at Pimlico Race course during a special Military tribute. He has had the honor to sing for three u.S. Presidents, the chairman of the Joint chiefs of Staff and Medal of Honor recipients, and more recently, at the Pre-Mass concert in Philadelphia for Pope Francis. www.anthonykearnstenor.com

12 FIT FOR A KING!

this portrait of King Leatherbury was painted with the cover of The Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Hall of Fame edition firmly in mind. (think Time Magazine, man of the year!) a solid likeness painted in a strongly chiseled style, in the full sun of a bright day at the track, seemed the right approach. the head fills most of the space, and leaving room for title and copy, the background needed to tell a story simply. Ben’s cat winning was an essential ingredient, and Pimlico, dressed for Preakness week completed the idea. the painting is 20x16 inches, oil on canvas, with a custom frame in black and gold. Retail value: $5,000. (Donated by Sam Robinson Fine art, www.samrobinsonfineart.com)
