THE WORKINGS OF THE SPIRIT Anyone who has seen a loved one off to a new adventure knows how difficult it is to rejoice, even when we are reasonably optimistic about their future. So, we can imagine how difficult it must have been for the disciples to rejoice in Jesus’ announced departure. Today’s Gospel is part of Jesus’ Last Supper discourse, recorded only by John. Jesus announces shocking news. He must go to the Father, and they should rejoice in this. To help them through this, Jesus gives his disciples his give of peace and promises an Advocate. From our privileged position in history, we can see that all that Jesus promises comes to pass. The Church has grown and still exists on this earth because of the abiding Spirit. But living by the Spirit and entering into the peace of Christ is no small task. Jesus doesn’t promise the apostles a rose garden. He is realistic about the costs of discipleship. And, mercifully, he is also clear about its rewards.

 

LA OBRA DEL ESPÍRITU Cualquiera que haya visto partir a un ser amado hacia una nueva aventura sabe que es difícil alegrarse, aun cuando nos sintamos razonablemente optimistas sobre su futuro. De modo que podemos imaginar lo difícil que debió ser para los discípulos alegrarse cuando Jesús les anunció su partida. El Evangelio de hoy es parte del discurso durante la Última Cena y sólo Juan lo relata. Jesús hace un anun-cio perturbador. Debe ir al Padre y ellos deben alegrarse. Para ayudarlos, Jesús les da su paz y les promete un Abo-gado o Paráclito. Desde nuestra privilegiada posición en la historia, podemos ver que todo lo que Jesús promete, pasa. La Iglesia ha crecido y aún existe en este mundo gracias a la presencia del Espíritu. Pero vivir por el Espí-ritu y entrar en la paz de Cristo no es tarea fácil. Jesús no les promete a sus apóstoles un jardín de rosas. Él es re-alista sobre el costo de ser un discípulo. Y, misericordio-samente, también describe con gran claridad sus premios.

Did You Know? Is Your Family Prepared for a Natural Disaster? A news report on last month’s earthquake in Southwest China demonstrates how important it is to have a family preparedness plan in case of a disaster. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children offers the following recommendations to all families potentially impacted by a natural disaster: Know where your children are at all times; Stay together; Take photos of your children with you when evacuated; Give children identification information to carry with them, including the child’s name, date of birth, address, phone numbers, etc.; E-mail digital photos of all family members to extended relatives and/or friends; Photocopy important documents and mail to a friend/relative in a safe location; Make a plan with your children, so they know what to do if your family becomes separated during an evacuation. EL DISTINTIVO DE LOS CRISTIANOS En esto conocerán que son mis discípulos, en que se amen los unos a los otros (Jn. 13,33-35). Hay muchas cosas que pueden distinguir a los Cristianos, pero el distintivo principal de un Cristiano siempre será el amor. Hay muchas cosas que nos pueden distinguir como personas cristianas, como por ejemplo ir a misa cada domingo, rezar, alabar a Dios, visitar la capilla del santísimo, pertenecer a un ministerio o grupo en la Iglesia, hacer obras de misericordia, etc., …Pero el verdadero y auténtico “distintivo” de un Cristiano, siempre será el amor; amor a Dios y amor al prójimo. “Ámense los unos con los otros, como Yo los he ama-do” (Jn. 13:31-33).Nuestra manera de amar no es cualquier modo, tiene que ser al estilo de Jesús; y como amo Jesús? El amo hasta el extremo, hasta las últimas consecuencias, hasta dar la vida por los demás. Cristo dice: “ámense unos con otros” y continúa diciendo, “como yo los he amado”, y el mandamiento principal es este “amar a Dios y al prójimo como a uno mismo”. No hay mandamiento más importante que el amor y por eso este debe ser el distintivo principal de todo Cristiano. El amor es la fuerza más poderosa que mueve al hom-bre y a toda la humanidad. Como Cristianos estamos comprometidos a amar como Jesús, y Jesús amo hasta el extremo, es decir hasta dar la vida por el otro, siempre.

THE DISTINCTIVE OF CHRISTIANS If you have love for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples, (John 13:33-35). There are many things that can distinguish Christians, but the main distinctive of a Christian will always be, love. There are many things we can distinguish us as Christians, such as going to Mass every Sunday, pray, praising God, read the Bible, visit the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, belonging to a ministry or church group, doing works of mercy, etc., ...But the real and authentic "distinctive" of a Christian, will always be love: love of God and love of neighbor. "Love one another as I have loved you" (John 13.31-33). Our way of love is not just any way, it has to be like Jesus, and did Jesus love? He loved until the end, to give his life for others. Christ says: "love one another" and continues, "as I have loved you", and the commandment is this "love God and your neighbor as yourself." There is no commandment greater than love and why this should be the main hallmark of every Christian. Love is the most powerful force that moves man and all humanity. As Christians we are committed to love as Jesus and Jesus loved until the end, i.e. to give his life for the other, always.

Reflecting on God’s Word Forming a community is never easy. This is true whether the community is made up of family members, citizens, or believers. Diversity can both enrich and divide. Jewish Christians were soon joined by Gentile believers. The church in Jerusalem was joined by the church in Antioch. While the Gentile Christians questioned whether they had to accept all the Jewish traditions and customs, Jewish Christians feared they would lose what had given them their identity. Today’s reading from Acts witnesses to the role of the Holy Spirit in helping to navigate a way through these sensitive issues. The leaders of the church in Jerusalem send a letter to the church in Antioch, proclaiming that the decision they reached came not just from human wisdom, but from working with the Holy Spirit. Such testimony to the role of the Holy Spirit is also found in the Gospel of John. At the Last Supper, Jesus tells his disciples that the Holy Spirit will come from the Father and “teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you” (John 14:26). Because of this promise, we can have confidence that God will not abandon us. Indeed, the Trinity comes to dwell with those faithful to Jesus’ word. When we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, we call on the Holy Spirit both to open our minds to Jesus’ word and to transform bread and wine so that we become more fully the body of Christ and the living temple of the Holy Spirit in the world.—James A. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios Formar comunidad nunca es fácil, ya esté la comunidad compuesta de familiares, ciudadanos o creyentes. La diversidad puede enriquecer o dividir. A los cristianos judíos pronto se les unieron los creyentes convertidos del paganismo. A la Iglesia de Jerusalén se le unió la Iglesia de Antioquía. Mientras que los cristianos de origen pagano preguntaban si tenían que aceptar todas las tradiciones y costumbres judías, los cristianos judíos temían perder lo que les había dado su identi-dad. Las lecturas de hoy de los Hechos da testimonio del papel que tuvo el Espíritu Santo para ayudar a navegar a través de todos esos delicados asuntos. Los líderes de la Iglesia en Jerusalén le envían una carta a la Iglesia de Antioquía di-ciendo que la decisión a la que ellos llegaron no vino de una sabiduría meramente humana, sino de trabajar guiados por el Espíritu Santo. Tal testimonio sobre el papel del Espíritu Santo también se encuentra en el Evangelio de Juan.
