Dear Pupils

The move from Year 9 to Year 10 is one of the most important during your secondary education because thedecisions you make will have an impact, not only on the two years of GCSE, but for a long time afterwards. To make informed decisions we have created this resource to help you gain a better understanding of thecourses which are available to Pupils in Year 10.

The information within this booklet will discuss the range of options available to you while at the same timedescribe the core curriculum which all Pupils follow regardless of option choices. In Year 9 Pupils will makethree option choices from a range of subjects available. By now, you will have been given your ‘PreferredOption Form’ and will have started to consider those subjects you would like to take at GCSE. Thesepreferred options are NOT your final decisions and it is important that you consider the following factorsbefore you make your final choices by the end of March:

● Are you interested in the subject?

You will be following the courses you select for two school years so it is important that you will be happy.

● Are you confident with written examinations?

Some of the courses are partially assessed by assignments and controlled assessments. If you are notconfident with unseen examinations then this may be helpful for you and

● Are you choosing the subject for the right reason?

You have to make choices which help you achieve your potential not because your friends are studyingthe subject or because you like the teacher.

All Pupils follow what is known as a ‘core’ curriculum which includes RE, English, mathematics, science,Welsh, and the Welsh baccalaureate. All of these subjects are examined to a full GCSE level or equivalent.PE is part of the core curriculum but is not examined.

Over the coming weeks you will hear a lot more about ‘options’ and ‘decision-making’ but the mostimportant advice I can give is to make sure you make choices so that you can be successful. We don’t wantPupils to get stressed or unhappy because they struggle with an option. This will have a negative effect onother subject areas. So, you should speak to your teachers to see if you are likely to achieve your potentialin the subject. School is a place to learn, be challenged but most importantly succeed.

Good luck in the process of making these important decisions. We have every faith that the year group willbe able to break records and achieve some stunning results.

Best wishes

GCSE MATHEMATICSWHY IS IT IMPORTANTAt Key stage 4, all pupils undertake an examination course in mathematics. From September 2015,mathematics will form two GCSE’s; these will be called Mathematics and Mathematics Numeracy. This canbe either at Higher, Intermediate or Foundation level. The Higher course in Mathematical methods looks atthose pupils who have a good understanding of maths, and are particularly able at Algebra and Geometry. These 2 elements, together with Number and Statistics, form the basis of the Mathematical Methods course. There is equal weighting to each area, and pupils are examined on their content at the end of the course.

Mathematics is important for every career, and option choices will be restricted if pupils do not achieve atleast a grade C in mathematics. Many seemingly unrelated courses at Advanced level require at least a Cgrade in maths. These include all the Science courses, Psychology and Computer Science. Mathematics is soimportant in real life. We use it every day when working out discounts, wages and all aspects of budgetingfor a home.

COURSE CONTENTThe GCSE Mathematics will enable pupils to appreciate the coherence, creativity, elegance and power ofmathematics. It will prepare pupils to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities andcareer choices. It will feature problems set both in real – world contexts and within mathematics itself. It willbuild on the topics taught at KS3 and develop the main four elements of mathematics further. It will teachlogic and all pupils will be able to calculate their personal finances in the future.

ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTBoth GCSE’s will be assessed externally with two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes.

This is in the form of 2 examinations which are split into Non-Calculator and Calculator papers. The gradesthat can be achieved go from A* to C at Higher. The intermediate course covers the same content but forpupils targeted between a B and an E grade, and the Foundation course covers exactly the same content, but only looks at each topic area up to a grade C.

There is also an option for very able pupils to be entered for the Mathematical Methods exam at the endof year 10. They will then follow an additional mathematics course which will be examined at the end ofyear 11. This is a bridging unit to ‘A’ level. They will also sit the Mathematics Numeracy exam in year 11.

We have high standards and high expectations within mathematics and pupils will be expected to attendafter school revision/help sessions and there will many opportunities for exam practice in the school holi-days.
