JosephAllenKuhn,M.D.wasanextraor-dinaryman,andnowords,imagesormeansofcommu-nicationcouldeverexpressthedepthofhisgreatness.Despitethiscommonsenti-ment,weneverthe-lessattempttopaytributetoaneminentman.Asaskilledsurgeon,Dr.Kuhnwasfrequentlycalled

uponbyMaryCrowleytosurgicallyremovethemostdifficulttumorsfromcancerpatients.Hissoftdemeanorinstantlyputpatientsatease,andduringtheirrecoveryphasetheyexperi-encedthehighestlevelofmedicalattention,gentlenessandhumility,forwhichhegaveallthecredittoGodastheultimatehealer.Joe,ashewascalledbymany,wasnodifferentwithhiscolleagues.Allknewhimasadevotedfamilyman,abrilliantscientistofgreatcuriosity,asurgeoncommittedtoinnovatingsurgicaltechniquesforcancerpatients,amanofstrongChristianfaith,andafaithfulfriendandconfidant.

Hiscontributionasasurgicaloncologist,clinicaltrialInvestiga-tor,andkeymemberoftheStrategicDevelopmentteamatMaryCrowleycreatedalastinglegacy.Dr.Kuhn’screativepatientcarethroughsurgical,medicaloncology,andclinicalresearchtechnologiesmadeasignificantimpacttowardadvancingnewtreatment.Astrongadvocateforpatients,hefaithfullyservedontheMaryCrowleyInstitutionalReviewBoardformanyyears.Throughhisyearsofscientificresearch,hewasmostproudofworkcompletedwithhistwodaughtersthatchallengedDarwin-isminhopesthatsomewouldultimatelyrecognizeaCreatorofallthingswonderful.Hisdevotedwifeof36years,Mollie,con-tinuestoserveasaTrusteeforMaryCrowleyCancerResearchCenters.
