“The arts are essential to building strong communities and successful companies. Through the arts, we expand our horizons; we learn to communicate more effectively and to appreciate diverse ways of thinking—critical skills in today’s world. The arts also help us think more creatively, which can lead us to greater innovation in our more technology-focused pursuits. Science, technology and business would be the poorer without the arts.” - Jim McNemey, President and CEO of The Boeing Company I don’t think a stronger case could be made for keeping the creative arts as a critical component of a student’s education; and moreover, a case to encourage collaboration among diverse organizations and artists. Through collaboration, unique ideas lead to projects that might never have been created otherwise. For over 33 years, the Council has fostered collaboration between artists, students, organizations and classrooms. We are a stronger community and will be long into the future thanks to the creativity that has resulted. Thanks to everyone who is a part of that vibrant legacy! We are now dreaming about the next 30 years. Let us hear your ideas on building a stronger community for the next generation… our eyes and ears are open!

PROFILESMICKEY PLANKER has always been an “outdoorsy” and adventurous kind of guy. After high school, his love of the outdoors took him south to enjoy the sun and surf of South Florida where he attended the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale. It was the surf that helped him to stumble upon Stuart and the Treasure Coast where he’s been since 1998, continuing to enjoying the area and all it has to offer. With more than 20

years of experience in design, Mickey Planker has won numerous ADDY Awards for logo and graphic designs for clients such as Delta Airlines, Siemens Corp., TKO Boxing, the Stuart Air Show and others. In 2007, he diversified his professional portfolio and joined the Army National Guard. He was deployed to Afghanistan in support of “Operation Enduring Freedom” from October of 2012 to August of 2013. While deployed, he learned about the logo contest for the new bridge being built in Stuart and saw it as an opportunity to connect with home. He realized that if his design won, he would be a part of Martin County’s history. Contact info: (772) 349-3558 [email protected]

MINDY Z. COLTONAward-winning Orlando artist Mindy Z. Colton, originally from New York City, was classically trained in all the traditional arts: painting, sculpture, draw-ing, print making and pho-tography, she pursued a career in Graphic Design & illustration. She eventu-ally left behind her suc-cessful career to follow her true passion as a fine artist. Her focus in recent years has been on sculpture in various materials and large outdoor art. Involved with horses her entire life, she chose to combine her pas-sion for both art and equine in her unique sculptural works. Colton lives on a small horse farm in East Orlando and is also invited to judge, jury and curate exhibits. She also judges dressage horse shows. Her work is in museums and galleries and in public and private col-lections across the United States, Canada and Europe.

ANNE T. CONVERSEgrew up with photographs-the black and white snap-shots of relatives: stately portraits, candids and fond family moments. Also pho-tographs from the LIFE magazines, National Geo-graphic and the US Camera helped shape her intuitive sense and personal vision of photography. In the early 1990s, Con-verse pursued a longtime desire to photograph the thoroughbred scene. Since then, she’s photographed in the winter months at Pay-son Park Thoroughbred Training Center in Florida. And has visited many tracks in the US and in France and England. Photographing the people and the lifestyle has helped fine-tune my personal vision, in all as-pects of my photography. Her book released October 2013, The Mystique of the Thoroughbreds, A Visual Journey, is a collection of photographs from these last twenty years.

ANTHONY M. ALONSO’S passion was creating fine arts paintings of famous thoroughbreds, their owners and their environment. A coffee table book entitled The Fine Art of Anthony Alonso was published in 2007 and contains 150 images of Mr. Alonso’s original oil paintings. Original paintings are on permanent display in public collections at Arlington, Belmont, Churchill Downs, Laurel, Santa Anita andWoodbine Race Tracks, The National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame and the Seacoast National Bank, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Alonso was a graduate of both The High School of Music and Art in New York City and Pratt Insti-tute, Brooklyn, NY. He also studied at The Art Students League in New York under Samuel Oppenheim and John Howard Sanden. Sad-ly, Mr. Alonso passed away earlier this year.

LEGACY PROGRAMTHE ARTS LEGACY SOCIETY welcomes Maureen O’Connor Deighan and the Pettengills to the growing roster of local individuals who have stepped forward to join fellow arts lovers who are keeping the ARTS in mARTin flourishing for the next generation by making a commitment for a legacy gift.To learn more, to discuss a potential gift, or recognition for a gift that you intend to make, please call Nancy Turrell, executive director, 772-287-6676 ext 14.

“The Arts Council has grown and ac-complished great things in 33 years: arts education, exhibitions of fine local art as well as national and international exhibits, WSA, conferences serving lo-cal artists, ArtsFest and much more. My mother was one of the original docents at the Court House Cultural Center and over the years she loved to talk about the experiences and friendships she enjoyed at the CHCC. Let’s come together as a community to ensure that the Arts Coun-cil continues to grow and serve during the next 30 plus years. That’s what my family has done. Please ask about Arts Legacy today and how your family can help.” Maureen O’Connor Deighan, Arts Council Board Chairman, 1993-1996

About Terri & Michael Pettengill: As an art student beginning at age 7 with Saturday classes at the Toledo Museum of Art and continuing through to a degree in Commercial Art, Terri knows the value of the great community service the Arts Council provides. This is just one of the reasons Michael and Terri feel it is so important to contribute their time and resources to help in any way they can in bringing the culture of art to Treasure Coast. Michael was especially pleased and proud to design and install the beautiful lighting of the Court House Cultural Center which is the home of the Arts Council through their company’s “Art of Light” program. Whether through volunteer hours, donations or planning a legacy it is their pleasure to continue their contribution to the arts here at home in Martin County.

PICTURE PEOPLEImpact on Young Students

DURING THE 2012 –13 SCHOOL year, the Picture People Program visited with third graders at Jensen Beach and Citrus Grove Elementary Schools, compliments of the Arts Council of Martin County, who created the program. Each month two artists were showcased to approximately 200 students who learned about each artist’s life and their rich legacy in the annals of visual art. Touched and inspired by their paintings, the children’s eyes opened to the world of art, not only in the past, but in their own lives as well. Debra Magrann and Debra Alessandra happily volunteered their love and service to the students of Mar-tin County and were fortunate to expe-rience the impact they made. Lead teacher, Kim Brown, speaks for all the teachers when she explains, “Picture People is a great program that enriches our students. The students look forward to Ms. Alessandra’s vis-its and can’t wait to learn about the artist each month. This program al-lows the students an opportunity to learn about the great artists that have made an impact in the past. We are very fortunate to have this program available to our students.”

Story contributed by Debra Alessandro

“It was a joy to share with such an eager and attentive audience,” Mrs. Alessandra noted.

“A few of their many comments are quite telling.”

MEET OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERSA COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS encourages and advances its cultural as-sets and achievements will thrive not only economically, but also in terms of qual-ity of life its reach is far and wide. Focus-ing on the arts can lift a community from mediocrity to greatness faster than com-munities that don’t. Cultural preservation and growth are vital for a community. It is what gives us our humanity, our soul, our history, and our purpose. The arts are the “jewelry” of the community. As the lo-cal advocate for the arts and cultural assets of our community, I am proud of what we at the Arts C o u n c i l have done to advocate for the on-going cul-tural story of our town. We take our cultural and fiscal stewardship role seriously. Our goals are aligned to our mission, which is aligned to fiscal sustainability. Even dur-ing these trying economic times we have managed to get debt free, operate more ef-ficiently, and yet maintain those programs and services that serve and support the arts in our community. But if our town is to thrive culturally we must continually challenge ourselves to lead, to nurture, to create, and to inspire the creative growth of our town. We must ask ourselves what can the arts do for the community? Can we help bring attention to the sad health of our river and estuary? Can we help in

the schools where the art, dance, or music experience may be lacking? We must cre-ate and seize those opportunities that help Martin County to be a place where the arts and artists thrive. As a working artist in the role of chair of the council I have found it to be extremely rewarding and sometimes challenging. I’ve met countless people that care deeply about the state of the arts in our commu-nity and work hard to make sure the arts thrive and grow. The challenges come

from realizing just how many people don’t have access to some form of cultural en-richment. Un-fortunately in bad economic times it seems that it’s the arts that are first to be cut. So our challenge then is to fill that gap. It has been a fun year with

the Arts Council of Martin County. We have accomplished a lot but there is always more to do. I want to inspire everyone to become more involved in the cultural sto-ry of our town. Introduce someone new to our cultural experiences. The rewards will come back more than you will ever give.

Meet this year’s class of new board members

RONI BARTOLINIAfter attending New York City’s High School of Art & Design, Roni pursued her art and psychology de-grees in Connecticut. Time spent as an art educator and school psychologist followed. She continues to be a on the Board of the Hartford Art School, hav-ing served on the Board for many years, chairing the alumni committee and in-augurating the now yearly alumni show. Getting back to her artwork and serving her new community are now top priorities.

NEIL CAPOZZINeil is the owner of Stuart Art & Supply located on Kindred Ave in downtown Stuart (near the Post Of-fice). Neil has been in the art field as a painter for 48 years and a retailer of art materials for 40 years.

RICHARD LEVENSTEINRichard is a partner in the law firm of Kramer, Sopko and Levenstein located on Monterey Road in Stuart, specializing in commer-cial and healthcare litiga-tion; business and hospital law; physician practices; medical staff issues; and trust and probate litiga-tion. When not practicing law, Richard is the princi-pal cellist for the Treasure Coast Symphony.

They join returning members Lisa P. Young, Hank Gonzalez and Jim Chrulski in com-prising this year’s slate. Retiring from service after two terms are Donna Linton, Robyn Mendez and Nicki van Vonno. Board members typically serve two three-year terms. The board plays a vital role in the activities of the Arts Council from assisting with fund raising goals, providing leadership and oversight to our financial and policy decisions and in being visible advocates for the Council and the arts as a key element of the quality of life in our community. Many serve as volunteers on our committees before taking on a role as a board member. When recruiting board members, we seek to find a diverse set of talents and trea-sures to ensure a well-rounded point of view.

CULTURE NOTESCitizens for Florida Arts, Inc., the citizen support organization for Florida’s Division of Cultural Affairs, proudly presents Convening Culture 2014: Connecting the Arts with En-vironmental Conservation, January 28th - 29th, in the inspiring setting of the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

THIS STATEWIDE CULTURAL con-ference will provide opportunities for meaningful professional development for Florida artists and individuals involved in Florida’s cultural organizations. Conven-ing Culture 2014 will also offer specific opportunities for participants to learn about the potential long term collabora-tions and crossover between arts pro-gramming and environmental conserva-tion. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about these two areas from nationally recognized leaders in addition to having the opportunity to network and learn from one another. The conference fee of $70 per person in-cludes attendance at the Tuesday evening Opening Reception and Talk from 5:30 to 7:30 in the beautiful Laura and Bill Buck Atrium at the Museum. Conference attendance includes lunch and the full day of all conference sessions on January 29th. For more information and other event details visit:www.florida-arts.org/conveningculture/

THE ELLIOTT MUSEUM’S 3rd exhibit in commemoration of its grand re-opening celebrates Josef Albers’ extensive contribution as an artist and educator. A number of Albers’ paintings will be on display, as well as the work of two of his students; Neil Welliver and Jane Davis Doggett. Welliver and Doggett mastered Albers’ discipline of the interaction of color, and made it, in decidedly different ways, central to their work. In this exhibition, the Elliott Museum will continue its commitment to combine traditional museum experiences with interactive learning. Throughout the exhibit, visitors will take part in hands-on color experiments, allowing them to create their own color palettes, to experience and explain color-blindness, and ultimately, how colors combine to complement and confound - inviting you to experience color as never before.
