October 9th 1963: a 263 million cubic meters landslide, detaches from Monte Toc and falls into the Vajont artificial lake at a speed of 90 km/h. A 250 meter wave oversteps the dam and falls into the Piave Valley, destroying the cities of Longarone and Castellavazzo. A second wave quantified at 20 million cubic meters rises up to the Vajont Valley and destroys part of the villages of Erto e Casso. An estimate of 2000 people died.Today the Vajont Valley counts barely 400 inhabitants, who are searching for a strategy to stay and to built a different future. After fifty years, the scars left by the catastrophic event are slowly healing: the population centres have been rebuilt; the artificial lake has been emptied and a dense vegetation has grown on the landslide. The elements of the memory of this event, represent an important legacy and attract ever thousands of visitors every year. Since 2008, the municipality of Longarone organizes a hike around these elements of memory, which reached a participation of 8000 hikers in 2013.On June 26th, 2009 Dolomites were nominated as World Heritage Sites thanks to their beauty, unique landscape, and geological interest. The Vajont

Valley, located at the foot of the Dolomites, has since gained extraordinary value. The 50th anniversary of the Vajont disaster, offers an occasion to rethink a strategy for the valley. This research project acknowledges the complexity presented by the current state of the valley; where the difficulties found in the mountain regions are overlapping with the consequences of the traumatic event.Despite this complexity, the valley presents a great potential and motive for re-population; either because of the changes that have taken place in the valley in recent years, either because of the value of its memory. This project brings together three main objectives for the valley. The identification of a new memory path, the qualification of the valley as a door to the Dolomites and the introduction of activities that will sustain the economy of the valley. The achievement of these objectives, aim to foster both the development of tourism in the valley, as well as a repopulation by old and new inhabitants alike.

The traces of the memory are not confined to the dam surroundings, but stretches from there to the heart of the Valley. The fist objective is to bring up

to date the most marginal elements of the memory and connect them with the landmarks that today are in the spotlight.

objective two Vajont, door to the Dolomites

The Vajont offers an ideal environment to practice several open air activities, such as hiking, biking and climbing. Its weakness is to be identified in

the absences of facilities. The second objective is to qualify the Valley as a door to the UNESCO Dolomites.

In the past few years the Valley has seen a slight demographic stabilization, together with the start-up of a few ventures related to tourism. The third objective is to sustain and enhance the development

of the existing and new ventures, in order to achieve, on the medium and long term the demographic stabilization.

In 2009 NATO leaves the Soesterberg Airfield. The area is purchased by the Province of Utrecht, that is now looking for a strategy of transformation from military use to civic. FAST was asked to carry a research to identify the possibilities of reuse of the base.

The restoration works of the “Tesa 113”” of the Arsenale in Venice foresees the adaptation of the building to laboratory and exhibition space dedicated to the art of typography, since its traditional locations in the town centre have been taken up by an increasing number of mass tourism shops offering low quality counterfeit items.

Piazza Costantinidetails of an energy efficient building

This residential and office building rises nine floors above the open space of Piazza Costantini.

The south façade is porous and benefits of the direct sunlight. Four wide loggias are framed into an eye-shaped volume cladded in travertino stones.

The structure is composed of pillars and prefab concrete slabs of 9x9 meters, that allow a flexible layout of the dwellings.

The roof is covered with solar cells that provide electricity for the illumination system and the kitchen appliances.
