BRITISH CINEMA??

WHat next??

Here at OUTAKE we are not only dedicated keeping up with all the lat-est fasion trends, (see above) but we are also dedicated to trying to bring film home, and to try and celebrate any homegrown talent that may be shining through the cracks, we try do this through running as many articles possible about British ccinema, we do this because for years there has been a serious gap in the market in terms of British Cinema, the screens have been dominated by Hollywood blockbusters with big budgets and there has been no room for the modest Englishmen to let his creative juices flow on to the film screen, so to speak.Dont get me wrong i enjoy all the American remakes and fast paced high octane action thrillers that are often found gracing screen 8 at the local cineworld, but it just feels like there is something missing. In the past few years we had relied on people such as Danny Boyle to pro-vide some gritty British masterpiece, but these days he is more preoccu-pied with the much more mainstream picture, and it is safe to say that Guy Ritchie has had his day, as he last 4

or 5 films have been pretty much unbearable as he tries to recreate the onscreen gold that are Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smok-ing Barrels, but he has yet to reach these heights once again. The metaphorical reigns of British Cinema have now been passed on to a new school of home-grown talent as the always reliable Ken Loach who has never kicked up a fuss is still as consistent as ever as he continues to slowly very but indeed very well climb his way up the film ladder. This attitude is also mirrored by the ever controversial Shane Meadows, who most recently has teamed up once again with the delightful Paddy Constantine, to create the critically acclaimed Moc-umentary Le Donk and Scorzeze, which to be fair was a huge nar-rative shift from the usual films associated with these two, as Dead Man’s Shoes and This is England both circled around issues that were not only frustrating but also very emotive for viewers. In order for British Cinema to becoming the dominant force which many believe it should be a new breath of fresh need to be blown into it, as the only way that there is still any income into the business is through the always popular Harry Potter and through this film many of the London based studios are able to stay afloat and there able to scrimp and save the dosh to make many of the low budget gritty mas-terpiece associated with the British studios.

AS the second an-niversary of the death of on screen legend draws near, the British Film In-stitute is celebrat-ing the life and work of Newman by running a series of his best produc-tions throughout the month of May.

Being known as one the great-est actors of all time ‘the hustler’ was last seen gracing the screen alongside Tom Hanks and Jude Law in the critically acclaimed road to perdition, this was to be his last on screen role until his struggle with cancer. Probably best known for his roles as Butch Cassidy in the academy award winning and alongside Tom Cruise in Martin Scorceses The Colour of Money, there were many elements in Newman’s illustrious career, one of his greatest passions was Mo-tor racing describing it as “the

THE BICYCLE THEIVES (1948)

Widely thought to be one of the most

influential stories of its generation and

possibly all time, this film sees the lead

character Antonio Ricci played by Lam-

berto Maggiorani and his son search-

ing the Rome for a stolen bicycle, which

Ricci needs for his job putting up posters.

This leads them on a chaotic journey in

which emotions are high due to the na-

This film is set in post World War 2 Italy

economic struggle of the country at

this time, and due to the way this story

has been humanized through the perfor-

films to come out of the neo realist films

of this period.

As the curtains close for the 82nd time on anoth-er successful Oscars, it is safe to say that the acad-emy have once again not let us down.Early buzz around the Kodak theatre suggested that film of the mo-ment avatar was going to breeze past all opposition to collect the majority of little golden statues, however, this was not to be the case, not to fear loyal avatar fans as the James Cameron 3D epic did manage to secure the awards for Best Cinema-tography, Visual effects and Art Direction. The rest of the night

however belonged pretty much to Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker scoop-ing up the awards for Best Writing, Best Art Direc-tion, Best Sound Editing, Best sound mixing, Best Film Editing, Best Picture and Kathryn Bigelow even beat her ex-husband James Cameron For the Best Direction, these awards meant that there was still room for the best actor and actress in a leading role. This year these accolades would fall to Academy Award veteran Jeff Bridges for his role in the won-derful portrayal of a down and out musician in Crazy Heart and also to Oscar newbie Sandra Bullock who after years of waiting, sort of, was finally able to step up to the podium for her perfor-mance in the heart warm-ing true story the Blind Side, just days after receiv-ing a Razzie for a different role. You cannot really talk about the Oscars these days without referenc-ing the hosts of the show, this year the responsibil-ity fell to comedy legend Steve Martin and 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin, it is safe to say that these two were able to convincingly able hold the audience for the duration of the awards despite a few dubious jokes and below the belt digs at George Clooney they seemed to go down well with the star studded au-dience.

“This adds something extra to what are in my opinion, already brilliant productions

If you were looking for a city where there was an array of talent and a constant stream of show-cases all around the city display-ing this you wouldn’t immediately thing of the historical roman city of Chester. This is why the entertainment group Chester Performs has been formed in order for the people within the area to catch a glimpse of the talent and indeed culture that are evident within the area since the closure of the local cin-ema and the fact that the theatre within the city is an attraction which is often overlooked by many.Adam Lloyd works with this group in order to make sure that not only does everything run smoothly but also to ensure that the people of Chester are aware of the displays which are being put on all over the city.“One of the ideas that we had was to try and not only bring a bit of culture to the city but we also wanted to use the surroundings of Chester, as it in fact a very beauti-ful place and this is where the idea

This is the second year of the SOAPBOX productions and if crowd numbers are anything to go buy it seems as if it will become an annual events and become a significant date on the cities calendar. Linda Stone-baker a mother of two who has attended several of the SOAPBOX productions says “All of these events have been very good I think it is good that they have been performed in all of these different places because not only it is a very good backdrop but also people who are just walking past may also be able to appreciate it.”This is not the only event or-ganised by Chester Performs, they also have do something call Screen Deva, which show-cases a whole host of films, from new independent films, which are low budget and need a platform on which to be presented, and also mainstream Hollywood movies which many of the screen Deva patrons at-tend just to enjoy once again and to indeed support the Ches-ter based company. This event takes place in June of 2010 and will feature films such as the Al-fred Hitchcock classic Vertigo and critically acclaimed musi-cal Once which is based around a busker in Dublin, and is a film which is sure to down a storm with Chester Audiences.
