FLORIDA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (FHSAA) POLICIES
The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) is a non-profit organization of public and
private junior and senior high schools. The primary purpose of the FHSAA is to serve the high
school students of Florida through an educationally sound program of interscholastic activities,
sponsored and approved by the member schools. The interscholastic activities program is
designed to serve both participants and spectators. Students learn from travel, from other
student-athletes, experience, and from visiting from other schools. Competitions between
schools should be planned with an emphasis on educational values.
The FHSAA assures that the policies, standards, and regulations, democratically developed by
school leaders, are designed to provide maximum benefits consistent with sound educational
practice for every student-athlete at every school.
The FHSAA functions within the framework of a Charter and By-laws. The Charter outlines the
scope, purpose, and authority of the association. The By-Laws contain the standards to be met
and maintained by high school students wishing to participate in interscholastic activities and
the necessary regulations pertaining to the successful operation of the program. All of the
regulations, rules, and provisions are established by vote of their member schools. By
accepting membership in the FHSAA, each member agrees to abide by the regulations which
they have enacted.
The FHSAA is a service organization. Over the years, the FHSAA has developed many
services and activities designed to assist school administrators, faculty members, and officials in
conducting a sound program of interscholastic activities. Some of these activities are as
follows:
The Association organizes and supervises all district, regional, sectional, and state
tournaments and meets.
The FHSAA seeks to upgrade the caliber of officiating. Rules interpretation meetings for
coaches and officials are held annually throughout the state. Rules books, case books,
and other instructional materials are provided.
All game officials are registered with the association and must take standard
examinations annually, and must attend the FHSAA Rules Clinics.
The FHSAA maintains a library of current athletic rules and films for use by member
schools, coaches and officials. These are available at www.fhsaa.org.
The Association compiles and publishes the Activities Calendar, an annual compilation
of interscholastic activities. Copies of the calendar are furnished to the Principals of
member schools, Superintendents, faculty members, and are also found on the FHSAA
Website (www.fhsaa.org).

NCAA ELIGIBILITY
DIVISION I
If you want to participate in athletics or receive an athletic scholarship during your first year, you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse and pay a one‐time $50 fee once you complete your Junior Year in high school. You must also:
Graduate from high school
Complete these 16 core courses: o 4 years of English o 3 years of Math (Algebra I or higher) o 2 years of Natural or Physical Science (including one year of Lab Science if
offered by your high school) o 1 extra year of English, Math, or Natural/Physical Science o 2 years of Social Science o 4 years of extra core courses (from any category above, or foreign language,
nondoctrinal religion or philosophy)
Earn a minimum required grade point average (GPA) in your core courses
Earn a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches your core course grade point
average and test scores on the sliding scale (for example, a 2.400 core‐course GPA needs an 860 SAT or 71 ACT)
You must complete the 16 core‐course requirement in eight semesters, which begins when you initially started high school with your ninth grade class. If you graduate from high school in eight
semesters with your class, you may use one core‐course unit completed within one year after graduation (summer or academic year) to meet NCAA Division I initial‐eligibility requirements. You may complete the core course at a location other than the high school from which you graduated and may initially enroll full time at a collegiate institution at any time after completion of the core course.

DIVISION III
Division III colleges and universities develop student‐athlete potential through a holistic educational approach that includes rigorous academics, competitive athletics and opportunity to
pursue many interests and passions. Student‐athletes are responsible for their own paths and are provided with many opportunities to develop within comprehensive educational experience. Division III minimizes the conflicts between athletes and academics through shorter playing and practicing seasons, a lower number of contests, no redshirting or out‐of-season organized activities, and a focus on regional in‐season and conference play. Division III college‐bound
student‐athletes are not certified by the Eligibility Center because Division III colleges and universities each set their own admissions standards and there are no initial eligibility
requirements in the division. College‐bound student‐athletes should contact their Division III college or university regarding policies on admission, financial aid and athletic eligibility.
