he human being's capacity of enduring isparadigmatic. It is certainly this feature, alongwith our adaptability, what has made us thewinning species on the planet. We are plastic, elastic, and capable to acquire any form andto integrate ourselves into any situation

conforming to it.My friend Paco, an exceptional therapist, genius of so

many things, told me years ago talking about food:"Alfredo, do not worry so much about food, we will sooneat shit and we'll be even able to metabolize", to which, asit's customary in him, he added an old joke, the one aboutthat South American president who asked one of hisadvisors about the situation of the country.

- "Sir, I have both good and bad news for you - answeredthe advisor -. Which one do you want to hear first?"

- "The good news" - said the President.- "We're sunken in shit up to the neck, and soon that's

all we will have to eat." - said the advisor.- "Well, I see, that's the bad news! Now what's the good

news? - asked the president.- "No, no, sir! THAT WAS the good news! ... The bad

news is that there won't be shit for everybody."Accustomed as we are to resist, we often forget that this

is not the purpose, nor the natural state to walk the pathsof life. To the pressure of the environment, we add ourinternal pressure, much larger if anything, as it conditionsthe way we react to what comes to us.

We must relearn to ventilate ourselves, otherwise we willexhaust our reserves, and that, far from being a healthyattitude, will prevent us from fulfilling everything we havecome to fulfill.

Being always up to the brim, one single drop willdestabilize the glass liquid and will cause it to overflow.Especially in the critical phases of our lives, when we mustdraw from where there isn't anything, this principlebecomes evident before us. Emptying, then it is moreimportant than refilling, releasing ballast more importantthan dropping anchor, cast out air more important thanblow it in. We should not fear this situation, because thatabandonment, to which we must surrender, will make usstronger, but above all, it will let us float on our shipwreck.

A friend of mine, a scholar of many things, used to callthis attitude "to stand from beyond the line", that is, toplace yourself from the line toward the outside or theinside. If the limit, the line, represented the absence ofsymptoms, he maintained that health, understood assomething assertive, should be beyond that limit. Health,well-being, the natural, was being beyond the absence ofnegative symptoms; rather, it was an assertive and positivestate, from which we could assume, with guarantees ofsuccess, the EXCEPTIONAL, something that sooner orlater will come to us and knock our door.

Sun Tsu said it this way:"He who uses ordinary forces to fight and extraordinary

forces to win comes out victorious. He, who on the

contrary, always uses the extraordinary forces, will exhaustin his campaigns and when the time comes, he will lackresources to deliver the definite blow to his opponent."

Endurance, our resistance, adaptive capacity, intelligence and the ability to impose our judgment andresist changing, may eventually lead us to stand on theedge of the abyss. The stronger, the more intelligent youare the worse in this case.

Resilience is not enduring. Genuine renewal is not toselect what we "want" but what suits the new stage of ourspirit. Pressing crisis undress us little by little. Travellingwith a lightweight luggage, not only external, but especiallyinternal, will help us to better face the transit.

No need to worry ... what is worth keeping will still bethere when all pass. Things and people also have thecustom, that ability of insisting on their own attempt.

Crisis force us to reconsider the essential and in doingso, we all must place ourselves "beyond the line", so asto have room to live ... and not just survive. Enduring isnot enough, we must learn to enjoy again; arduous taskin the middle of a cr is is, I know, neverthelessindispensable.

Only with the stick with the donkey walk ... Yes, but hewill end up beaten, injured and sore everywhere. Using thecarrot will be like "oiling" the bearings of our vital system, itwill give space so that all the good reaches us, and, mostimportant, when that happens, we can appreciate it. It isthe joy and not the absence of pain which provides spaceto resist the stakes that life will give us in the future, marginto live in peace, because peace is not the opposite of war- it's love - but its simple absence.

When the fathers of the American Constitutionincluded in their ideology the pursuit of happinessas a human right, they opened a door to hell andanother to heaven. Nevertheless, givingyourself a chance, withdrawing to the winterquarters to wait out the snow, enjoy thesimple, go back to the basics, is the realfast that wil l al low us to heal ourwounds and then return to dailystruggle, with much greater strength, wisdom and compassion. All, withoutexception, we must relearn to love;docile as a child, curious and simple, and the winds of life will not findresistance in our simplicity. The stormwill pass and we will continue firm onour feet ... or at least crawling on allfours.

Going back to the beginning, to thatchild in all of us, heals many wounds; takinghis strength, feeling his candor, heats themost wounded hearts and lets the blessing ofhis strength, joy and blind confidence thateverything will come, because the guardian ofconfidence in life, is the child within us.

teven Frederic Seagal was born inLansing, Michigan on April 10,1952. His first contact with MartialArts was not very nice because,at age 7, he was knocked out bya karateka in a fight.

In his youth, the Seagal family moved tolive in Fullerton, California, where he hadthe opportunity to start practicing theShotokan Karate-Do style under thetutelage of Sensei Sakamoto, whointroduced him to master Fumio Demura, ofthe Shito Ryu style. Later, he met the AikidoMaster Harry Kiyoshi Ishisaka, founder ofthe headquarters of the Aikikai style inOrange County, California. That was howSeagal began his training in this Martial Art.At 17 years, Seagal moved to Tokyo,

because his father worked for the USArmed Forces. There he met the AikidoMaster Hiroshi Isoyama, which took him tothe Aikido Founder's dojo, Master UeshibaMorihei, in the region of Iwama. He got soimpressed by his teachings that heimmediately realized that this was what hewanted to do for the rest of his lifeIt was not easy for a Westerner to enter

the xenophobe Japanese society but ifanything characterizes Steven Seagal, is histremendous stubbornness; that's why, aftera thousand and one obstacles, he managedto become the first non-Asian to open aschool in Tokyo, where he taught Aikido tothe Japanese. The school, called TenshinDojo, is now run by his ex-wife MiyakoFujitani, also a teacher of Aikido, with whomhe had two children: Take Kentaro andAyako Fujitani. They came to have about 2,000 students

in different dojos. Seagal trained thereactors l ike James Mason and SeanConnery. During the 15 years he was inJapan, he pursued what he calls the "Wayof the Implacable Warrior", developing abody and a mentality of iron.In 1984 he returned to Los Angeles,

where he opened a Martial Arts school andalso served as a bodyguard for actors andpoliticians. At that time he divorced Miyakoto marry Adrienne La Russa. But this newmarriage did not work and a year later,Seagal married actress and model KellyLeBrock, with whom he had three children. Thanks to the latter, Seagal became friendswith Michael Ovitz, one of the most

influential artistic representatives of Hollywood and a great lover of Martial Arts. This gave him theopportunity to enter "through the front door" in the world of cinema, as an actor, co-writer and co-producer of the film "Above the Law," which had an average budget. When Warner Bross startedfilming, disinterest was unanimous, the shooting locations were hardly visited by informationprofessionals ... The future of the film was far from encouraging, because the main market was theUnited States. The film was finally released and critics and other people, full of prejudices, came up to the

screening room willing to endure what they assumed it would be a soporific film. Attending thepremiere was purely a formality; several critical comments concerning the possibility of leaving before

the end of the movie were also heard. However, toeveryone's surprise, the film was not as bad as theythought. It is unclear whether it was due to the great

disappointment that was presaged or to any other factor, but the reviews were quite lenient having into account thequality of the film. Some critics apologized describing himas "a little fresh air to the new prototype of Americanhero" or "is not the typical muscular hero, is rather a newDirty Harry".His debut in 1988, thanks to the good reception among

muscular hero, the fact is that the film wassuccessful wherever it premiered. For theproduction company it was more than profitable, and ensured the future of Steven Seagal as anactor."Above the Law" succeeded all over the world.

In all press conferences, Seagal said: "I don't likeplastic heroes, like Rambo or Commando. I likepeople like Nico, people who cry. Surely you'llnever see a plastic hero weep, instead, mycharacter is a family man who cares about others."When asked about his first movie experience,

he said: "I could have done some films a fewyears ago, 'cause I had the necessary contacts, like James Mason, but I didn't carry it out until Ifelt it was appropriate; besides, it should be afilm that really was worthwhile. I didn't want tointroduce myself prematurely in this world, I

wanted to do something that was reallyappealing, with a script according to the times.Since I was a little kid I loved the movies and forme, the main thing of a film is the story. I didn'teither want to make a film that was too simple, inwhich people were killed on the basis of fantasyand violence. When the boys leave the theaterafter seeing these films, they are convinced thatyou can punch someone and the person will notbleed. I didn't want to give that image, that'sfantasy and lies, because if you hit someoneproperly, the person will fall to the ground andbleed. This is the reality and that is the image Iwanted to give."To offer this image, he himself was responsible

for the choreography and images of action.According to him, the screen techniques have tobe fast, simple, clear and succinct.

His second film, "Hard to Kill", became the sixth top fund-raiserMartial Arts production in the history of the films in this genre, surpassing the $ 45 million. Seagal didn't disappoint the unusualconfidence that had been placed in him. Certainly, neither Ovitznor Warner Bros were wrong when they gave him a try."Marked for Death" and "Out for Justice" were also

blockbusters, but they seemed to confining him to the stereotypeof a tough Italian-American cop, expressionless and walking likeJohn Wayne. However, his fifth film, "Under Siege", gave the actor a new

vitality. The film, full of humor and thrilling action, left satisfiedeven the most demanding of viewers. It grossed 156.4 milliondollars worldwide and, undeniably, was his best film.To this would be followed by "On Deadly Ground", film that

unveiled his humanitarian and ecological aspect. Here we foundan almost omnipotent Steven Seagal for his work as producer, director and star, although this was nothing new, since the actorhad been carrying out labors behind the scenes since his firstfilm. In "Out for Justice", for example, he even co-wrote two ofthe songs from the soundtrack. After the success of "Under Siege", the production company

continued to explode the profile of the character Casey Ryback

and rolled a sequel. This time the action takesplace on rails, instead of the sea. Steven Seagalpromoted the film all over the world and in hisvisit to Spain he told reporters about somediscrepancies with the producer: "My intention isto make other type of films, I would be veryinterested in starring in movies in dramaticgenre, but that doesn't depend entirely on my, itis also up to the movie studios whether they arewill ing to give me other papers or not."Furthermore, he said he was against excessivelyviolent scenes and characters: "I will neversupport violence for violence. I have alwaysbeen concerned that my fi lms contain amessage or a moral background. In my films I tryto enter values such as honesty, the importanceof family or the care for the environment. "He insisted that he wanted to give another

was conditioned by the studio: "I want to convey certain messages, of course, and it wouldbe much easier to do it through dramatic or social films but, for better or worse, I someonespecially gifted to play action roles and currently I'm only offered films in this genre. In fact, Ihave to fight tooth and nail every day with producers and writers to reduce violence in myfilms, but they usually have the last word." Outside the microphones, I asked him about hisremarks and he told me of his intention to work in any other studio, where he could havesome freedom to choose his characters and the content of his films. In 1996, following a multifaceted path, it surprised seeing Seagal in "Executive Decision",

in a second plane in relation to Kurt Russell, star of the film. For many fans of Seagal, thefilm was a fraud because on the poster and advertising appeared the actor as a co-star,when he really played a secondary role, although quite important in the plot. That same year was premiered "Glimmer Man" and this time he was the real protagonist.

The novelty was not see him playing a relentless detective, former CIA agent, and breakingbones everywhere, but the novelty lay in the humor, something that hitherto was

conspicuous by its absence in his soberinterpretations. Despite this change, the film did notwork at the box office. In 1997, he shot another environmental movie: "On

Deadly Ground II," in which he plays an EPA agentfighting the dumping of industrial toxic waste in theKentucky hills. The film was a failure worldwide.Hollywood began to lose confidence in the aikidoka asthe vein of gold. A clear example of this was that thefollowing year he starred in "The Patriot", his first filmnot distributed by Warner Bross, besides being hisfirst live video release in the United States (although itwas released in theaters almost all over the world,

distributed by Tripictures). "The Last Patriot" wasanother environmental thriller the actor produced withhis own money and was filmed near his farm inMontana.Everything presaged a major debacle in his career,

however, Joe Silver, producer of the Matrix saga, andwho also had produced and worked with StevenSeagal in "Executive Decision," continued to believe inhim, and gave him the opportunity to shoot a film,"Exit Wound", which had the necessary means: withthis film the actor returned to the movie screens oftheaters in North America. Steven Seagal didn't wantto be typecast only as an action movie actor and no

one knows if it was due to his influence or because of thedirector, but the film had fewer Martial Arts scenes than hisprevious films. The film had a great commercial success, grossing nearly $ 80 million worldwide. Despite thesuccess, Seagal failed to channel or re-launch his careeras an actor. He embarked on the shooting of "Ticker", co-starring with Tom Sizemore and Dennis Hopper, a filmrolled in San Francisco. In this film, Martial Arts wereconspicuous by their absence, and many people didn't putany hope on it for its poor quality, so in America wentstraight to DVD. In Europe it was released in somecountries: in Spain was distributed by Filmax.

In 2002, he filmed "Half Past Dead", co-starring rap starJa Rule, achieving almost 20 million dollars worldwide. Theoften-repeated prison topics hardly interested anybody. From there on, his career seemed to be in a clear decline,

decreasing the quality of his films, like "The Foreigner","Out for a Kill", "Belly of the Beast", "Clementine" "Undercontrol", etc., until completing almost twenty titles. In 2010, he returned to the screens around the world

with "Machete", directed by Robert Rodriguez. In this filmabout the life of villain Torrez, it was hard to see adepraved and unscrupulous Seagal, at least for theundersigned...

From 2010 to 2012, perhaps following in the footsteps of Chuck Norris, he was involved in thetelevision series "Extreme Justice", but it didn't have the audience success of "Texas Ranger".

After the series, he followed with low-budget productions that were released directly into the DVDmarket and alternated with his participation in the television series "The Steven Seagal: Lawmanshow". The first two seasons were broadcast on channel A & E but, after a judicial controversy, thechain decided to cancel the release of the third one, which passed to Reelz. Such controversy arosebecause the actor made inroads into the world's most radical politics. Part of that group of 3,000unpaid volunteers who provide Sheriff Joe Arpaio support in fighting illegal immigration. Arizona is oneof the most conservative states in the U.S.A. on the topic of immigration, the cradle of legislation thatallows that any person can be requested by the authority to show a proof of his or her identification

without having committed any crime. The absence of identification isconsidered a crime and therefore may involve deportation. Steven Seagalhas never hidden that in his opinion, illegal immigration is the mostimportant problem that the country faces, and has a long history of co-operation with Joe Arpaio, known as "the toughest sheriff in the country."Beyond Arizona, Seagal also collaborates with civil patrols of New

Mexico, Texas and Louisiana, in the fight against illegal immigration.According to the actor, the main problem of the United States "is notIslamic terrorism" but "open borders", because he thinks that "throughthese boundaries can enter any kind of terrorism and, in fact, it enters",he said. If he became governor, Steven Seagal says he would focus onthe Arizona's border security. In his opinion, "between 10% and 20%" ofthe 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, are"tough criminals".Seagal and Arpaio have been a target of criticism from pro-immigrant

activists, who have accused the Sheriff of Maricopa of arrestingundocumented immigrants and contribute to their deportation, based ontheir Hispanic racial profiling. Steven Seagal defended him in the chain ofTV ABC15: "If Joe Arpaio is racist? No, he is not. And I'm not saying that Ithink he is not racist, I'm saying that he is NOT." He added that "Ifsomeone commits a crime is a criminal; no matter if he or she is Mexican,Irish or Chinese". Besides, he attributed the phrase to President Ronald

Page 30: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

Reagan: "If you have no security in your borders, you haveno country."What is unquestionable is that Joe Arpaio has had to

modify his working tactics after a court concluded that hisdepartment was carrying out practices of racial profilingwhen arresting people in Maricopa County. RegardingSeagal, he publicly announced that he would consider inthe future running for governor of Arizona. The actor hasan interest in politics and a curiosity is his friendship with

Russian President Vladimir Putin. Part of the family of theactor, an American citizen himself, is originally Russian, since his paternal grandparents emigrated from thiscountry to the United States.Steven Seagal was about to jump from the movie world

to diplomacy, he even mentioned in the past the possibilityof taking Russian citizenship.According to what was published by Buzz Feed, Putin

proposed to Steven Seagal as honorary consul of Russia

in the States of California and Arizona, and as a potential intermediary between the Kremlinand the White House. But what he has recently done is obtaining the Serbian citizenship. After meeting Serbian

president Tomislav Nikolic and prime minister Aleksandar Vucic, he declared he consideredSerbia as his new fatherland and promised that he would do what was necessary topromote it.Steven Seagal is indisputably a versatile man of a great talent: expert in Martial Arts,

specialist in the use of knifes and firearms, with wide knowledge in Acupuncture, in thepractice of the Zen or in the herbal oriental medicine, actor, choreographer, producer, director, involved in the defense of the environment and in Buddhism, musician with his ownband that gives concerts all over the world … and seemingly, now he is going to get intopolitics... Is there anything left for him to do? You can be or not in agreement with him, butthe conclusion to which I got after a brief meeting with him is unquestionable: Seagal issincere and is not afraid to express openly his opinions, he doesn't measure his words like itother actors do. He may be wrong, but he is a sincere and brave man when it comes toexpressing himself.

The Philippines has a long history of life and deathcombat. From ancient times to the modern day, thefighting arts of the Filipino archipelago have proventhemselves time and again to be efficient, effective andextremely deadly forms of fighting. There are countlesssystems of Filipino martial arts spread throughout the

thousands of islands in this region. Many arefamily arts and no “outsider” will likely

ever learn them. Fortunately, manyhave also been made available tothe rest of the world. From theKyusho perspective the studybegins with learning revivaland restorations, but thendevelops mobile armtargeting as its Martialfoundation. When youdissect an attack, besidesa kicking action, all otherattacks start with the arms, but the challenge is that thearms are the fastest movingparts of the body with thegreatest range of motion anddirectional attack capability.

So it is a very challengingsection of training that should be

integrated into every session, in somany variations. There are other

SenryakuStrategy... When everything isunder control!

“Certain defeats prepare us for greatvictories”

Max-Pol Fouchet

To have eagle eyes; to seebeyond the moment; to see theproblem many kilometers away ...Who can do it? Maintainingcontrol of the situation, even whenare the opponents those whomove... And then?

iven the fact that the human beingmoves and wants that everybodyperceives his movement, by virtueof vanity, arrogance, or whatever, his own condition denotes that hisbases, being fluctuating, establish

disruptive patterns with the real importance of hismaneuvers. I'll explain:

Japan

“Keeping everything undercontrol is to observe andanalyze, think, stay calm,

in the stillness of the spirit, with a peaceful heart...

It's to know that strategy isa way of economy of force.”

Page 48: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

Some say that strategy is a key point that everyoneshould study. I do not agree: strategy is a strong pointin the hands of people trained. History is full ofexamples of men who believed themselves strategistsand squandered the lives of millions of soldiers inconquests, lands, territories ... I agree with a formerserviceman I met in Brazil, saying that the ignorantplays the role of strategist. It took me years tounderstand the depth of his statement, but it is simple:he who is not able to measure his steps towardshimself, cannot understand the danger of a poorlyperformed maneuver; inconsequential, he merely seeksto be in advantage, which, in turn, means nothing in theworld of high strategy.

Anyone who doesn't understand the comings andgoings in the relationship between extremes thatconfront one another, act as fools in their personalrealities and therefore collective. They play with emptypossibilities and lose. They are unable to measuredistances, they don't know when to back down, whento invest... Keeping control of a situation is far beyondsimply hold, isolate and negotiate. It's a kind of "modusoperandi" that determines how to handle the crisis.

The question promotes more than just moving; oftenit is best to allow the opponent to move, to let him goahead in some moves; to let him win some battles ...For the concepts of the one that "deceives himself" onthis slippery slope, in his mind, which is irresponsible

and is led by the impulses of the animal subconscious, ithasn't yet appeared the idea of a reflection that make himslow down and give another direction to his route - or evenmodify his position. In general, he remains "self-absorbed"and tied to the ideas that seem safer to him; he is not evenable to rearrange his ways of acting. Maintaining controloften means to flow into hard and irreducible positions.

Gustave Flaubert said that "The height of pride isdespising oneself", and what inconsequential people do ina strategic maneuver is despising themselves so that in thevery next moment we are all utterly undone! The beststrategist is not the one who always wins - winning is aconsequence -, but who maintains secure his basis fornegotiation. Pietro Ubaldi explains in one of his books thata missionary asked a savage why he didn't raise a cow forhimself instead of stealing his neighbor. The savageanswered that is much less work to steal the animal whenit's been already raised and prepared... in his logic, whichonly understood his particular and immediate advantage, there was no reason why he couldn't choose the shortestand easiest way, of smaller resistance or less work.

As this savage, many, convinced that they are very wisepeople, dare to swim in a sea full of sharks without evenknowing the movement of the tide. Keeping everythingunder control is to observe and analyze, think, stay calm, in

the stillness of the spirit, with a peacefulheart... It's to know that strategy is a way ofeconomy of force.

“The art of living is more like wrestlingthan dancing, in so far as it stands readyagainst the accidental and the unforeseen, and is not apt to fall.” (Marco Aurelio)

On the other hand, think that no strategyis made by merely wishing or wanting thatour opponent accepts your movement.Quite the contrary, persuading, overcomingdistance, means making the enemy's gameby controll ing through him our ownmaneuvers.

From the point of view of wisdom, it isaccepting the inexorable dynamics ofexistence, in other words, everything endsup by destroying itself, dying, perishing, coming to naught; the structures thatpromote good mobility should maintain thepossibility of loss so that in the end theycan reach the reward. We can really saythat even when moving from theadversary's optical and pattern, thedecision about how far to remain in thatposition is absolutely ours. Rationally, weall possess a certain quality of pride andgood sense. The eternal struggle between

these two sides, considering that the one doesn't excludethe other, can be the starting point for the necessary frictionof revalidating at every moment.

An interesting partner, a historian, says:"I don't quite understand that way of thinking. It is normal

for people who make of pride the biggest point of reflection,by not allowing the opponent to be in advantage, even if thesituation is controlled. In parallel, we all reverberate in theline of self-usurpation, when we lose the relentlesslypursued north".

Well, that is like allowing that the dullness of the mindshould cause a whole stagnation! Observe clearly, notwanting to interrupt the steps of the adversary, positioningyourself lucidly and make of each attack of the opponent achance for observation, is what promotes the shortagedeceptively presented with the projection of the enemy'sterritory.

I remember a notable teacher who always said:"Do not be carried away by appearances. Allow them to

exist so that your opponent can gain self-confidence. "It's never so easy to get lost as when we believe we know

the way." (Oriental wisdom)I have long thought about the movement structures of the

human being who believes in strategy in general. Quitedivided and increasingly sophisticated, heads are lost in aneternal game of hurting to win; they make the enemy thepeak of their movements. Besides being an error and amistake, that exercise causes in the person that carries itout a considerable wear which may the same as putting allyour eggs in one basket ... The adversary will never be thecenter of our actions. He is an integral part of an idea that ismodified in every moment and adapts to the conditions -accepting him as part of a structure that will work as animpeller to our goals. Any structural argument that presentsto us the maneuvers condition, be it in first or secondperson, it is deeply linked to the needs. But notice thereader: it is linked to the needs and not vice versa. Whenthe need is greater than us, then we are the point to benegotiated. Still, everything is necessary...

“BREAKIN’ UP IS HARD TO DO”

For this article, I borrowed the title of apopular song by the great artist NeilSedaka. Because it was first released in1962 (with a new version re-released in

1975), most of our younger readersprobably will not be familiar with it, butthat is not important, since only thetitle is relevant to the subject that I

want to discuss. In this context,“Breaking up” refers to thecommon situation of BlackBelts leaving theirInstructors to start theirown Martial Artsschool. Few martialarts situations are asc o n t e n t i o u s ,emotional anddivisive as thedeparture of aBlack Beltc u r r e n t l yteaching at his /her Master’sschool, tobranch out ontheir own.

I have seen this happen hundreds oftimes. In fact, I chose this topic for thismonth’s article because, in the last fewmonths, two of our affiliated schools haveexperienced that kind of separation butwere handled in totally opposite ways and, consequently, ended up with total lyopposite outcomes.

In the first case, a 4th degree Black Belt had beenworking full-time at a very successful school (with over 250students) for several years. The 39 year old was not onlyteaching the majority of classes, but was in effectmanaging the school: enrolling new students, supervisingscheduling, belt promotions and other activities.About 3 years ago, he respectfully approached the

Master expressing a desire to grow and be able to start hisown business, with the Master’s approval and still underhis supervision and guidance. He was told that he “wasnot ready” and that he needed to wait and continuelearning. The Instructor respected the decision andcontinued working at the school. The following year heasked again and received the same answer. After one moreyear, he requested a meetingwith the Master andproposed severalbusiness ideas thatwould offer beneficialsolutions to the situationto both parties. The

Master refused to consider any proposal and told theInstructor to be content in his current position or he wouldfind someone else. With a heavy heart, after consulting with his wife, the

Instructor left the school seeing no future for professionalgrowth and a better income. At the beginning of hisemployment at that school, he had signed a “Non-compete Agreement” (a common practice at US martial

arts schools), designed to “protect” theMaster from unfair or unethicalbusiness activities in his immediategeographical area and preventing thesolicitation of his current students. TheInstructor, dutifully and honorably wasdetermined not to violate the

agreement and opened his newschool much further out ofhis Master’s area than hewas required. He thancontacted our officeto affi l iate his

school with our Federation. After verifying that he was incompliance with his agreement, we issued him a Charterso that he could legally teach Combat Hapkido.Unfortunately the story does not end here. A few dayslater, the Master informed us that he was “angry” that hisformer student had left to start his own program andoutraged that we had granted him affiliation. He said thatalthough he had not violated any agreement and had actedlegally and ethically, we should have refused him affiliationjust to “punish” him for his decision and to hurt himfinancially by preventing him from teachingCombat Hapkido. I was stunned bythe Master’s reaction. It demonstratedinsecurity, jealousy and resentment. He could not reason calmly andunderstand the Instructor’s needs andaspirations. He was completely blindedby ego and selfish greed. I had knownthe man for 20 years and wasshocked by the level of malicehe had displayed in thismatter. He left ourorganization, angry that wewould not agree to help himdestroy his former student’sdreams of success and

economic security. Sadly, over the years, I have witnessedmany cases identical or similar to this one.In another area of the Country, just a few weeks later, the

same situation occurred at another of our affiliated schools.Although the details and background were not exactly thesame, the result was: the Instructor left and opened his ownschool. But this time the Master reacted differently. He wassad to see his student of many years leave, and it alsoaffected his business because that Black Belt was the ChiefInstructor of his school. But the Master understood hisstudent’s desire for independence, his aspirations forgrowth and his need of financial improvement. The Master wished his student well and offered his help

if requested. He even called my office and made it clearthat not only he did not have a problem with the Instructorobtaining his own Combat Hapkido Charter affiliation, buthe had strongly recommended to him that he stay with us

and continue teaching our system. Within a few days, the Instructor received his affiliation and startedteaching our program. Now, instead of beingbitter rivals competing against each other, they are sti l l fr iends and are evencooperating on certain projects. You can see the stark difference betweenthese two cases and you may wonder whythis type of situation does not always end

as in our second story. Shouldn’t aMaster be proud of theaccomplishments of his students?Shouldn’t a Master encourage hisstudents to grow? To branch outon their own? To reach newhighs? Shouldn’t a Master wishfor his students’ financial successand, ult imately, for theirhappiness? Theanswer is painfully simple: humannature at its worst. The first storyil lustrates some of the mostdestructive, negative andundesirable human emotions:selfishness, jealousy, insecurity, lackof empathy, arrogant ego, greed, thirst for power and control. Thosebase emotions are at the root of many of

our society’s problems, crimes anddysfunctions, and have been so forthousands of years. Unfortunately, theMartial Arts community is not immune orexempt. Many Masters and Grandmastersharbor and display those negative anddestructive emotions in their dealingswith their students and often even whendealing with their peers. In life we are constantly faced with

difficult and challenging situations. In theMartial Arts, “breaking up” is one of themand, like the song says, “is hard to do”.But it is how we react to those situations, how we handle them that reveals ourcharacter. I hope you always choose to behonorable warriors and true Masters. Let’s be role models and set a shiningexample for the rest of society to follow.

The Hook: Power or precision?

When you see the KO by a left hook and wonderwhy the opponent dropped when it looked like itbarely touched them, there is a real method that youtoo can add to your arsenal.

Yes, some hooks do land with enough power to stopan elephant, but so many don’t and that is what willbe described.

The head has several areas that when struck atthe correct angle will cause unconsciousness or atleast drop the opponent as they lose motor control. The reason you don’t see it a lot more is not becauseof the gloves, but rather the angle of the concussionto the head. Most punches land at 90-degree anglesto the head and there are no pressure points thatwill respond to this. The correct angle is 45degrees, with several targets accessible from arising or dropping motion. Several others, eventhough considered illegal in boxing, are accessed at a45-degree angle from the back of the head towardthe front.

The body will also not handle the 45-degree angleas well as it can a straight punch and there areseveral targets that offer much more devastatingresults without massive power. So the hook punchcan be a great tactical weapon in any Martial Artstyle including Boxing and No Holds competitions. But there is an important key that is needed tomake these actually work as described, even withthe correct angle, but first…

Page 89: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

“The head hasseveral areas thatwhen struck at thecorrect angle will

causeunconsciousness orat least drop theopponent as they

lose motor control.”

Page 90: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

Working the Angles

Beginning with the angles, there are by far many more targets to use adropping hook, but there are also others to work a rising fist, all easilyaccessed even with heavily padded boxing gloves, as we will see later. Onthe head lay great focal points that will add internal disruption dynamics intothe hook punch. By attacking the nervous system through precision ratherthan the bone and muscles through power, your strikes will have a muchgreater effect. As an example, directly between the chin and hinge of the jawthere is a point on the facial nerve where the buccal branch crosses. Thispoint, when struck down and in toward the center of the neck with a hookingaction, will cause the loss of motor control and/or unconsciousness. Usinggravity and precision rather than power will also decrease the fatigue factorthat weighs in on so many fights.Another great target is directly under the corner of the mouth on both sides

of the chin and again must be struck down and in at a 45- degree angletoward the center of the neck... This is called the mental nerve and will havethe same effects as the first target, but with the dramatic addition of alsocausing more shock to the brain stem adding even more dramatic results. By attacking the nervous system as opposed to the muscular and skeletal

structure, not only will greater results be evident with less power, but so toowith less fatigue. Because power is generated with a synergy of musclecontractions, with it comes a simultaneous tensing of antagonistic muscles aswell. The more muscle that is used in one motion, the greater the fatigue andthe less mobility there is available.

Key Component

There is also another key in what’s called “polarity.” This is what will make these targets work even better and with greater

consistency (a considerable asset when the other guy is aiming to hurt you aswell). As man is bioelectrical in nature then we must understand this keycomponent to be able to disrupt another’s natural energy pattern to causeloss of motor control and or unconsciousness. In its most basic form it is Yinand Yang, or in more Western terms, positive and negative. We can use thisnatural energy to short circuit the opponent. But when striking with the lefthook to the right side of the opponent’s head, the heel of the foot must belifted to accomplish this. Without getting too technical or mystical, let’s justsay that the hook will be vastly more potent if the heel is off the ground. The study of Kyusho has allowed me the eye to see and understand the KO

strikes as they often occur in Boxing and No Holds Barred fights. So many ofthese fights have been won by KO from an accidental pressure point strike, soimagine if someone actually aimed for them.

Page 91: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016
Page 92: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

Going with Nature

Since man’s natural method of attack is the hook punch, especially understress and the rush of adrenaline, when you look at real fights and recently theNo Holds Barred fights (specifically the early ones), even highly trained MartialArtists reverted to this method. So instead of trying to go against nature, wecan train to fall in with our natural instincts.

8 Targets (all legal for Boxing)

There are 2 single points and 6 clustered points that are legal targets forboth Boxing and No Holds fights. So no matter which way the opponent’shead is positioned there is an open target to get to.If the opponent’s head is up then the downward 45-degree hook can

access either single point on the side of the jaw or down and into the 3-pointcluster on the front of the jaw. Remember these must be struck down and inat a 45-degree angle, in toward the center of the neck. When the jaw is tucked (most likely the case with a more experienced

fighter) the clusters of points on the forehead, side of the eye, in front of theear and the bridge of the nose will be easier targets to get to. The points ofthe forehead and bridge of the nose must be struck down and in at the 45-degree angle, in toward the center of the skull to cause the loss of motorcontrol or unconsciousness.

We can also attack the 2 clusters on the side of the head but must vary theangle slightly on each. The downward 45-degree hook is still used but for theeyebrow cluster we need to strike it down and in toward the eyeball itself. And for the cluster of points in front of the ear, again, down and in at a 45-degree an angle, but this time in toward the center of the skull.

Safety

For the street, an open palm using the same hooked attack would be saferand leave no marks for later possible legal argument, but now you must strikewith the foot flat on the floor. For example, if you attack someone’s eye, theremay be permanent and observable physical disfigurement. Not only is thisunethical, but in a court of law you are now in double jeopardy and liable foryour actions and damages. Using Kyusho properly, no outward physicaldamage can be observed, therefore the burden of proof lay within conjecturein the legal system... a much more arguable defense.Merely knowing the pressure points will not necessarily make you a better

fighter, but they will make your hits much more effective and efficient, remembering you still need to train to get to them.

Theconsistent practice of these methods willnot only increase your abilities to relieve thepracticed formulas, but also instruct you inthe intuitive application of many otherhealth issues. They should not be conside-red standalone formulas, but rather ways tocorrect certain problems within the humanbody based on the foundation presented.

FU-SHIH KENPO - Combat Training

In Fu-Shih Kenpo, as in most styles ofMartial Arts and contact sports, the fundamental premise inCOMBAT is physical fit-ness, a matter which wehave been trying repea-tedly in our previousworks. Little or nogood can be expec-ted of an untrainedbody, an unprepa-red gun and anunconcentratedmind at themoment oftruth, whe-ther in as p o r t sconfronta-tion or as t r e e tfight.

For thisreason, jog-ging, ropejumping, exer-cising in gene-ral, stret-ching, flexibility, boxing, kicking, shadow-boxing, shadow kicking, combi-nations, sparring partners, etc., are fundamental.Otherwise, unless you are asuper highly gifted person orsomeone sent from God(with the due respect), youcan't expect much.

Page 103: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

n the Fu-Shih Kenpo, boxing, also calledEnglish Boxing or Irish boxing, and colloquiallyknown as Box, is a combat sport in which twoopponents fight using only their gloved fists, hitting his opponent from the waist up, within a

ring specially designed for this purpose, in brieffighting sequences called rounds, and according toprecise rules, which regulates weight categories andduration of the bouts, among other things. Boxing isone of the first sports that I learned in my teens and

one sport in which I believe and seemaximum efficiency. In a more general way, the term Boxing

refers to a wide genre of combat sports, inwhich two adversaries face one anotherusing their fists, exclusively or not. Thisdisciplines differentiate according to theirparticular rules in different sports as thealready mentioned English Boxing (orBoxing in strict sense), French Boxing orSavate, Chinese Boxing or Shaolin Boxing,Kick Boxing or Japanese Boxing, MuayThai or Thai Boxing, the former GreekBoxing systems l ike Pygmachia andPancrazio, etc.The first codification of the rules

governing Boxing matches dates back to1743, while the rules still in force, wereestablished in 1889 by the Marquis ofQueensberry, who among other things, introduced the use of gloves.Traditionally it has been considered to

be an exclusively masculine sportspractice, affected legally and culturally bygender bias. The recognition of women'srights and the advances in the fightagainst discrimination, has led to a rise inwomen's Boxing in the last decades, and

so the Pan-American Games of 2011 and the SummerOlympic Games of 2012 included Female Boxing in severalcategories. My first steps in the sports world of contact, and after Karate Shotokan and Kenpo-karate, both totallydegenerated by my first "Instructor" and not "Master",started with American Boxing.I was only 17 years old and I already had a reputation in

Pudahuel, my neighborhood in Santiago of Chile, becauseI was an Orange Belt in American Kenpo-Karate, back in1967. Back in those days, everybody knew about our

I

Page 105: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

tough and intense workouts, we really trained very veryhard and therefore "we were considered different from therest, or supermen, or even like if we were of another race."Imagine how seriously our training and feats were

considered, despite our low degree, that talking about aguy who was a KARATEKA in those days was synonymousof "Look out, don't mess with him!" And that was because, apart from the hardness of our trainings and tests, we“believed” in what we were doing and in ourselves, andbelieving in yourself makes you three times stronger.

Besides, there was much "ignorance" on the part of thepeople who didn't practice and were not even interested,or those who simply couldn't care less. There was too littledissemination about it...It's never the same being at war, in other words, living a

real street conflict, than "imagining" it. Americans knoweverything, discover everything and solve everything "infilms". Then the "Twin Towers" are demolished in front oftheir eyes and they had no clue that this could happen to"them", the semi-gods of this world...For my taste, and based on my experiences from my

childhood, a kind of mix or combination of Boxing andTaekwondo is ideal, considering sports or Martial Arts, toget a good and great combat system.Boxing dominates and specializes in short distance

while Taekwondo controls the middle and long distance. It

Page 107: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

is something like Full-Contact and Kick-Boxing. And I thinkthat both from the sports point of view and that of thestreet fighting, is the best combination, although, in myopinion, the roguery of the street should be added to thesports. The vision and effectiveness of the street. In my seminars I often say that it's much harder

perfecting a good kick or a good combination of punches, than "destroying an adversary with little effort and risk", nomatter how professional and strong he can be, athleticallyspeaking. And that I have confirmed and constantlyproved! It is like breaking a glass, a dish or any other thing,

slamming it against something ... Just let it fall or throw itagainst something. It takes very little time to destroy it, buthow long did it take the manufacturer to produce it andmake it reach our hands? All this may seem silly for fans, for tough guys, or even

for the typical imbeciles who have their say without art orposition, i.e., the "all talk and no action", those who havedone nothing good or beautiful in their lives, but they"express their opinion and try to pontificate".My own father was a boxer from early childhood. He

never had contact with Martial Arts until I was fifteen, when

he saw me start with them. I have said that in the past, Inever saw my father lose any street confrontation; neitheras a civilian, nor as a "cop". His life had been very hard. His father, my grandfather, died at age 35, reason forwhich, his own destiny led him to get involved in Boxingfrom childhood, just to survive. And that harsh reality waswhat made him strong until the end of his days, when atage 88 he died up in the elevator of a hospital, when hewas to see his doctor because he felt unwell. Hard life, sweet death. My old man deserved to die in peace andalmost painless, because he had suffered enough andbecause he was always a noble and legal man.I believed in my father, who never disappointed me, and

I believe in Boxing because it didn't disappoint me either.Furthermore, and regardless of whether I practicedShotokan Karate or American Kenpo-Karate, I always feltattracted by the good use of the legs. Thus, in the 80's Igot my 3rd Dan Black Belt, granted by the "United Tae-Kwon-Do International", UTI, and my Full-Contact 6th Dan,signed by BILL WALLACE.Regardless of all the existing systems, I've met and I've

trained with more or less intensity: Boxing, Karate, Tae-Kwon-Do, Kenpo, Full-Contact and Kick-Boxing, and I've

been lucky enough to know and workout with personalities suchas Pepe Legrá, José Durán and Alfredo Evangelist; in Karatestyles with Arturo Petit, Tatzuo Zuzuki and Robert Trias; Kempowith Petit, Ed Parker, Frank Trejo and Jeff Speakman; Kung-Fu inwith Jon Fanning; Limalama with Jorge Vazquez; Full-contact withBill Wallace; Kick-Boxing with Benny Urquidez, Joe Lewis, etc. This, apart from my street experiences and interventions in the

police field. That's why, athletically, I have a preference for thecontact systems in the line of Kick-Boxing and Muay Thai, without reaching the brutality of certain styles or moderncompetition rules, because I believe that such violence, camouflaged in sports terms, "is not necessary" among humanbeings. We are not in war times or battlefields. I think that the veryreality concerning the global crisis in itself should move us topractice sports and Martial Arts, to improve as human beingsbeing more noble, humble and useful to society.Problems come alone and we must train to stay strong and

keep a clear mind, to overcome every obstacle that life itself putsahead of us. But never to beget more evil, causing harm to othersand to our wonderful world, which is already suffering from ourown barbarity and abuse towards it. Like I said before, growingflowers, for example, takes a lot of work and care, but is veryeasy trampling them or cutting them and thus break the beautyand harmony of the landscape itself.I train every day to stay alive and lucid, to continue enjoying the

excellence of our world, to live intensely with my family, myfriends and students and even with each new acquaintance. I liveto contemplate each new sunrise or sunset, to photograph everylandscape of my surroundings, to admire the trees and flowers inspring... and finally to try to be happy and spread peace andharmony to my fellow men, but never to cause harm and pain inany possible way.

But although I've always been, thought and felt this way, life has taken me bydifferent paths, in which also I made my own mistakes, until I started to understandcertain mechanisms of our existence. So now I understand that everyone mustlive his or her own life, experience his or her own stages, with hits andmistakes, successes and failures. And now, at this time and in thesechapters, my mission is also that of informing, communicating andtransmitting. And what is now necessary is to talk about how toprepare our youngsters for sports competitions and / or martial,so let's get gradually into it.So far we have talked about physical and technical training,

flexibility, stretching, kicking, ballast weights, etc. Now, at thisstage it is appropriate to go on with Jogging as a key factorfor resistance, and also the punches, for example. Jogging isa physical exercise that involves running a long distance ata moderate and steady pace, alone or in a group, withoutcompetitive zeal. Physical exercise is essential to enjoygood health. Although there are many people who oftenfeel very heavy when it comes to start exercising, thetruth is that when they do it regularly, they end upenjoying it. For that we need to consider starting slowly,at least twice a week. If you manage to overcome thisdiscipline for at least 2, 3 or 4 weeks, it'll be greatbecause the fact of noticing personal improvements insuch a short time will be enough to motivate you tocontinue.Undoubtedly, many benefits are provided to us by

practicing a sport regularly.

What is jogging?

Jogging is a type of exercise consisting of trottingor running at a slow or leisurely pace for 10 to 20minutes or more.Ideally it should be practiced 3 to 4 times a week,

which brings us very important benefits to ourhealth. Among the highlights, we find that we findthat jogging is useful to lose weight and get slimmed, allowing to burn up to 350 calories in barely half an hour.

The Raúl Gutiérrez Column

It also helps reduce stress and the day by day anxiety, while toning your abs, focusing on aerobic and anaerobic sports such as Martial Arts and contactsports.Aerobic exercise is a physical exercise that needs breathing. It covers the

most common exercises like walking, marching, trotting, dancing, skiing, cycling, etc. Its aim is that of achieving a greater resistance. In order to obtainthe needed energy to perform these activities, it's necessary to burncarbohydrates and fats, and this requires oxygen. It is called aerobic exercise (also known as cardio) the one which requires

oxygen, while anaerobic exercise doesn't need O2. It is much easier tounderstand with examples, so here are some:Running, cycling, dancing or swimming are activities that require constant

effort and are based on muscular endurance and cardiovascular capacity, what we call aerobic exercise.People in general often resort to this type of exercise to burn fat and loseweight, combining it with anaerobic exercise, in order to achieve anincrease in muscle mass. The term "aerobic" includes those activities ofmedium or low intensity that can be performed for extended periods. Aswe have already noted, in this case the body demands oxygen to burnfat and carbohydrates. The heart rate varies between 120 and 170beats per minute.

Anaerobic exercise

The term "anaerobic" designates explosive exercises of highintensity and short duration, where the muscle works without oxygen:weight lifting, sprinting, Martial Arts, jumps in athletics events, etc.Anaerobic exercises or activities are focused on strengthening themusculoskeletal system to increase the bodily performance and tone

the muscles. The heart rate is over 180 beats per minute.Anaerobic exercise is classified into two types: alactic and lactic. The

first covers explosive efforts of short duration (0-16 seconds), wherethe presence of oxygen is almost nil. An example of this is found inshort races or sprints. Meanwhile, in the lactic anaerobic exercisewould encompass all those physical activities that last no more than3 minutes.

Budo International: What is Instinct?Justo Diéguez: Instinct cannot be explained in a rational

manner, since the very phenomenon of Instinct is irrational.Instinct is something that is beyond man's intellect, itcomes from someplace where intellect has no place; youcan feel it, but you cannot explain, you may notice thatsomething has happened because a vacuum, a chance, iscreated.

B.I.: Where does Instinct occur?J.D.: The explanation would answer questions like,

where does it take place? Why does it happen? What isthe cause? Instinct is a territory of events that has norelation to our thoughts, Instinct is something far superior.Instinct is not run by technical thinking, so it cannot bedeveloped through Technique. Instinct is much higher thanthought; it can use technical thought as a means, but not

vice versa, because Instinct stands head and shouldersabove technical thinking. Look at it this way: the mind issuperior to the body, isn't it? The mind can direct the body, but the body cannot direct or control the mind.

B.I.: What is the Instinct's vehicle?J.D.: Instinct needs no vehicle to travel. Once we feel the

Instinct, technical thinking is pushed into the background, very necessary to be able to transmit the objectives in aphysical way. There's no explanation about the superiority

of the Instinct over the technical mind, nevertheless thetechnical mind can feel that there has happenedsomething that is beyond ourselves, and the very fact ofrecognizing that this something has happened, i.e., thatthere has been a void where a top force has made usexpress something in a natural way, out of the technicalmind, is very important in itself; it's in this moment whenour mind will believe in a top inner force. Of course, technical thinking can also reject what has happened, andif you do think that what cannot be explained through the

Page 118: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

“We can use the technical mind as the instrument it is,and thus remain open, receptive...

this way of thinking will help us recognize and understandthe moment when something superior, instinctive,

nontechnical, has occurred.”

Page 119: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

technical mind does not exist, it means that you will go onbeing stuck on the technical thought, hindering the Instinctto speak to you.

B.I.: Is the technical mind compatible with Instinct?J.D.: We can and we must use the technical mind, who

said we had to be closed? We can use the technical mindas the instrument it is, and thus remain open, receptive...this way of thinking will help us recognize and understand

the moment when something superior, instinctive, nontechnical, has occurred.

We can use our technical mind for the expression of ourmovements, not for the explanation thereof. Instinct is aleap, not something that comes step by step; it'ssomething that happens to you, not something that comesto you; without casualties, without an origin. Instinct issomething that happens all of a sudden, nothing can graspit because it's not anything that can be transmitted,

Page 120: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

B.I.: The technical mind and Instinct?J.D.: The technical mind is divided into cause and effect,

the known and the unknown. Instinct is based on theunknowable, what you cannot know; such is the realm ofInstinct, you can feel it but you cannot explain.

B.I.: The technical mind and Instinct in self-defense?J.D.: Today Martial Arts are far from the "why" and the

"what for" for which they were created; technical

development is lived with total fanaticism, and it's sold asthe key to an absolute self-defense. Martial Arts havebecome contact sports with rules increasingly distant ofthe reality of the streets and their brutal predators. Self-defense is not in a technical mind; it's not in repeating thesame techniques ad infinitum and is not in beating anopponent in the ring,

Self-defense begins with valuing ourselves; itpresupposes respect for self and others; on the one hand,

it requires some principles and a technical mind which, with the understanding of our body mechanics, will help usto understand and improve our physical and emotionaltools so that we can reach a personal expression of ourown, adapted to our potential. Only then shall we be ableto perceive the extraordinary that lies behind an action, even if it's not perfect in its execution.

B.I.: Your next article?J.D.: I want to talk about woman, that woman who could

be my mother or yours, my sister or yours, my daughter oryours, my wife or yours. I want to talk about theharassment to which she is submitted, to the humiliationand violence that she must suffer for free in one way oranother.

Wing Tsun and the "Simple" Style

It is common to see many publications onWing Tsun (magazines, forums, advertising, etc.) stating with greatcertainty, that the most important featureof the Art is its simplicity. When a WT fanwalks down a street in a city in Europe andnotices a poster where Wing Tsun classesare offered, it is striking that almost all ofthem refer to the "simplicity" of thesystem as something that defines thestyle.Years ago I could more or less agree. At

present, the more I advance in the practiceof this art, the more aware I am that thissimplicity is only an appearance. In my opinion, this system of "rare"

aspect and light positions (or so it seemsto the non-practit ioner), encloses adifficulty, only accessible to those willing togo a long way; people able to see andunderstand the mythical phrase of greatLeonardo Da Vinci, that read somethingl ike: "Simplic ity is the ult imatesophistication".

n my humble opinion, this fantastic quote, which sumsup perfectly the spirit that should mark the path ofpractice in Wing Chun, has been confused countlesstimes.

The basis both technical and philosophical of the style, tries to reduce any technical / mental process to the binarysystem, and it therefore tends to minimizing all decision-making: 1 or 0, positive or negative, white or black, YANG orYING. Something simple in appearance, but the hardest of allbattles in practice.

As Great Master Wong Shun Leung said: "Man has thestrange disease of complicating things." Master Wong, perhaps one of the most important Wing Chun masters of themodern era, is certainly a clear example of the dilemma thatgenerates trying to oversimplify something that in practice isnot so simple. And it is not so because of that "strangedisease of complicating things" inherent in every man. Few(very few I'd say) are those capable to isolate themselves fromall noise and movements and carry out a mental and technicalprocess regardless of whatever their opponents attempt atany stage or situation. It's precisely then when the first of thebattles is being waged.

If we define the overall strategy of Wing Tsun, we will agreethat it doesn't seem too complicated. It seems to have beenclearly drawn by its principles:

• If the way is free, MOVE FORWARD (don’t withdraw).2. If you crash with your enemy, REMAIN GLUED TO HIM. 3. If the force (or the moment of force) is superior to yours,

YIELD.4. If your opponent retreats, CHASE HIM.

Maybe we should try to explain it more in detail, even forthose people who don't habitually practice Wing Chun Kuen:

1. We will remain in a totally immobile position to theeyes of our opponent (but loaded with elastic force),waiting for him to enter our application distance.

2. We will NOT show the slightest movement or tension. Not a single millimeter to the eyes of our enemy. We willwait like a predator expecting its prey.

3. At the very moment in which the enemy enters ourdistance, we will jump onto him with all our bodyprotecting ourselves with our hands and legs, to try toclose the gap between both of us in the fastest possibleway. We must enter his movement when his onslaught (orattempted) has begun. The longer we are able towithstand the attack, the less capability of response ourenemy will have.

4. If in the clashing with the enemy we find the path free(unhindered), we will strike nonstop to victory, withoutletting him recover from our flow of CONTINUOUSattacks.

If, on the contrary, we find obstacles, we'll stick witharms and legs to him so as to inhibit his attacks, deflectthem, or move to a safe angle, but ALWAYS with theintention to free ourselves immediately from their limbsand "pass his guard" to hit him again in a fluid andcontinuous way.

And a very important detail: Once started the conflict,we must take it to the end. Do not allow the adversary tocarry out multiple attempts, as is most likely to happen ifyou allow him to step away and redo again.

As you can see, what for many seems simple, perhapsis not so in practice.

In fact, everything gets complicated because it has notbeen adequately explained the need to separate into twoparts: on the one hand the system strategy and on theother hand the technique. The technique allows you tocarry out the strategy. And the strategy is made possible

by the existence of such technique / attributes acquiredthrough practice. Separate, different, but in all casescomplementary (yin and yang).

I firmly believe that understanding these two ideas, separate while complementary, is a correct startingpoint for training, and above all an excellent target thatwill steer the right course of our practice. Again, thisconcept that serves us as origin and goal at the sametime shows us the inseparable influence of Taoism inWing Tsun.

Referring to the technique, a practitioner of Wing Tsunshould understand that reducing to the binary code 1and 0 involves a number of advantages over otherstyles. Let's explain briefly this concept:

When a non-practitioner of our style looks from theoutside the execution of techniques by a qualifiedmaster, what surprises him most is the speed at whichthe master can move his hands and, especially, theprecision and apparent simplicity with which he canovercome somebody else.

I often affirm that the speed of a Wing Tsunpractitioner has nothing to do with genetic speed. Infact, the fastest practitioners are often almost elderlypractitioners. The root of this speed is especially basedon the "mental non-processing" of reactions andtechniques. That is, through methodical training of thereactions and techniques in the Chi Sao, the practitionermanages to reduce to a minimum any response.

That is, a practitioner collides with an arm of hisenemy; in that clash, the practitioner PERCEIVES(through tactile sensitivity) if there is a free path (1), or if,on the contrary, it's closed (0). One answer or another

will generate the reaction acquired in the training: 1 = go forward hitting,0 = stay glued to the limb with which he has crashed.

If the adversary, after colliding with our attack, moves his hand toclose our entry, it means that there's an opening elsewhere. Yielding tothe superior force is only finding / feeling that the door is closed, andseeking entry into another position automatically.

As you can see, this process is repeated in each and every one of thesituations that can occur in a confrontation. Mastery is achieved when, through proper training, these quick choices are processed in acompletely autonomous way.

After all this complex explanation, who would dare to say that WingChun Kuen is a simple style? Not me, of course!

As it happens in countless occasions, we tend to ignore or simplifywhat we don't understand or what exceeds us by its big complexity. This, in my opinion, is the cause of many of the ills of Chinese systems.Fortunately, Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist philosophy (mostly thelatter) are part of the DNA of the system, and you can't achieve themastery of the Art by separating what is inseparable. Any attempt toseparate denatures the style and turns it into a "caricature" of what itactually is. Indeed, it seems to be real, but basically doesn't have muchto do with reality. So let me say without fear of contradiction thatsimplicity is not among the main virtues of this style. Or, paraphrasingagain my admired Leonardo Da Vinci: "Simplicity is the ultimatesophistication".

The golden age of Ayuddhaya

Going back in time to analyse Mae Mai Muay Thai history, it can be seen how ithas its roots in the golden age of Siamese Martial Arts, an era which correspondsto the time when Ayuddhaya was the capital of the Kingdom (from the second halfof the 17th century until 1774). In the 417 years that Ayuddhaya was the capitalcity it was governed by 34 sovereigns, members of five dynasties. With a strategicposition at the junction of 3 rivers, Chao Praya, Pa Sak and Lopburi, the city wascrossed by channels which were also used as trade routes: more than 40 marketswere operating on the city’s streets and more than 30 on the outside.

Muay Boran

Page 168: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

yuddhaya played a key role in theeconomic (agriculture and tradegrew drastically) and cultural growthof the kingdom; Buddhist and Hindureligions flourished and many of thetemples which sti l l can be seen

today were built at that time. Such temples werethe place where many arts, among which martialarts, were highly developed. Ayuddhaya’ssplendour was the actual basis for the futuredevelopment of the reigns of Thonburi andBangkok and for today’s Thailand, too. Withsuch a background many were key figures thatmarked the development of the f ightingdisciplines in that era; among them, scholarsconsider the fol lowing two as the mostcharismatic and influential.

Tiger King Phra Chao Sua

The sovereigns have a lways played animportant role in the evolution of Muay Thaithat is why it was called the Art of the Kings;undoubtedly the most famous fighting Kingwas Prachao Sua, who was called Tiger Kingfor his strength as a fighter and his bravery incombat. There is a legend which tells that he liked to

fight a lot, so much that he even used to leavethe Capital Ayuddhaya and travel incognito in hiskingdom, to challenge the local champions, whom he actually always defeated. It was KingSua who ordered the Siamese army to trainregularly in the national Martial Art of Siam, MuayThai, and he personally contributed to the

A

Page 170: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

foundation of many Kai Muay (training camps) all overthe country. But let's take a step back and let's get back to the

time of the King's youth, when he was still known asKhun Luang Sorasak, in the early years of the 18th century. At that time

the capital of the kingdom of Siam was Ayuddhaya, founded by King U-Thong. Rebuilt after the first thaidefeat by the Burmese army, Ayuddhaya stood as theglorious capital of the kingdom for 417 years. The citywas located in a geographically advantageous

position and it represented the summit of Siamesecivilization for many years, both from an artistic andcultural point of view and, of course, it was the centerof the political and military power, too. For many thaischolars, the early years of the 18th century inAyuddhaya were the golden age of Muay Thai. Inmany respects, the Thai fighting system that hascome to our days has its roots in the fighting formstudied and improved in the capital during thoseglorious years. Pra Chao Sua was undoubtedly oneof the main names of that time, thanks to his genuine

Muay Boran

Page 172: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

passion for the fighting technique since he was a child. Thanks to his privileged position, Khun Luang Sorasak, hungry for knowledge, wanted to be surrounded by thebest Khru Muay of the time; masters from different partsof the country came together to Ayuddhaya, carrying withthem special styles and systems of Muay. Under thePrince’s watchful eyes, the royal court became anamazing laboratory where the best strategies andtechniques of empty-handed fighting were confronted, tested and synthesized, as perhaps it had neverhappened before. Never satisfied, Khun Luang personallycarried out a research about the most sophisticated MaiMuay (fighting techniques), leaving the palace in order tovisit the best training camps of the Kingdom and toexplore the methodologies used by the different masters. Thanks to his great athletic skills and his tireless

passion, the Prince, after reaching the throne as PhrachaoSua, didn’t hesitate to pretend to be a farmer to challenge

local champions, trying his fighting ability without thepowerful protection of his supreme condition, whichwould have prevented whoever from fighting against him. From a technical point of view, thanks to the most

recent researches carried out by Thai CultureCommission, we know that King Sua’s contribution wasessential to the formulation of an improved "technicalcurriculum", which was used for years as a guide fortraining the Damruot Luang, royal guard battalion, thefirst elite unit (now called special forces) of the Thai Armyin Ayuddhaya’s time. According to some authors, theroyal battalion’s combat style, known as Muay Luang, would be the result of the systematization of the fightingmethod “created” by Tiger King Phrachao Sua. According to this method, the warrior practitioner of

Muay must first train to become proficient in evasivetechniques, as the Latin saying goes: "primum vivere".Those defensive strategies are divided into four styles of

Muay Boran

Page 173: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

defense based on the natural weapon used by the enemyto attack. Therefore, we can study 29 ways to defend andcounterattack against punches; 25 forms of defense andcounterattack against kicks; 3 forms of defense andcounterattacks against knee blows, and 4 forms ofdefense and counterattack against elbow blows. Inaddition, to cope with situations where a quick offensiveaction is needed, for example for the presence of manyopponents who have to be quickly beaten, Prachao Sua’smethod is enriched by 22 forms called "sudden attack". Byfurther analyzing Muay Luang we find out that the fightingsystem of King Sua reveals an unsuspected technicalexpertise for that time. Tiger King was a great expert in themost sophisticated aspects of Martial Arts and theeffectiveness of his codified actions didn’t rely on anindiscriminate use of physical strength, but on a detailedknowledge of human anatomy (especially regardingsensitive and vital points), and the most rational use of the

main natural weapons of the body. He brought togetherpowerful leg and arm attack techniques and unpredictablemovements (jumps, level changes, twists), which made thefighter skilled in Muay Luang capable of easily adapting todifferent situations and opponents. Thanks to his enormous passion for Muay, King Sua

brought together the best masters of the golden age ofAyuddhaya that under his guidance created a real basis forwhat has been one of the most estimated and fearedcombat Arts in the world for centuries.

Nai Khanom Thom, the Thai warrior

According to the ancient Thai Masters, Muay Thai, thetraditional fighting system of Thai people, is an art ofcombat that gives its students the ability to fight againstone or possibly more opponents, using the human body'snatural weapons, from head to toes; in combat you must

Page 174: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

be able to use the arms to hit, grab and grapple, andeach body part is prepared in the best possible way tobe a "tool" to attack and defend against all kinds ofattacks (from the front, side and back). The serious student must learn about the weak points

of the human body so that he can reach them with hisattacks and he has to train the strong parts of his ownbody, to use them as defensive shields and as blades, sticks and maces to attack. Therefore the Siamese MartialArt is called the style of the "9 weapons”, because MuayThai teaches how to use with scientific efficiency head, hands, elbows, knees and legs, according to the so calledChern Muay offensive strategies. The human body, when properly trained, fueled by the

warrior spirit that makes it fight without fear, trulybecomes a weapon: this is the creed of most of theEastern fighting Arts. The legends of the martialtraditions of India, China, Japan, Korea and throughoutthe South-East Asia are full of episodes in which thehero defends himself against rows of armed enemies, using only his limbs and his courage as weapons. In Muay Thai, the most emblematic figure of those

traditions, midway between legend and history andcertainly an example for all followers of that Art, is thefamous warrior Nai Khanom Thom. His life story

represents the archetype of the exploits of the herowarrior, loyal to his homeland and to his Martial Art, whoat the time of maximum frustration and difficulty gets fromhis core values the inspiration to fight back, to overcomeseemingly insurmountable obstacles, restoring freedomfor himself, his comrades and, indirectly, all of his people. Taken prisoner by the Burmese, invaders of his

homeland, imprisoned during the terrible sack of theformer capital of Siam Ayuddhaya in 1774, Nai KhanomThom was taken to Burma (now Myanmar) with many ofhis fellow soldiers. During a series of fight tournamentswhere the Burmese forced the prisoners to fight asgladiators, the Burmese King Mangra saw Thom andobserved our hero’s great combat skills. Willing to testthe effectiveness of the Siamese fighting style, whichcaused many losses among the Burmese conquerors, the king Mangra decided to force the best Thai prisonerto fight in unarmed combat against a row of Burmesegladiators, chosen among the best in his army. Thegreat strength of the fighting system used by the Thaiscould not overcome the skill of the best fighters ofBurma! Here history and legend are mixed: it is told thatan epic bare knuckles battle to death took placebetween the Thai champion and 10 Burmese fighters(according to other versions they were 12 or even 13).

Muay Boran

Page 176: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

The truth is that the style of combat of Nai KhanomThom was very similar to what is known today as MuayKard Chiek or fight with wrapped hands. Thom was usedto employing all the resources from his own being, bothphysical and mental, to defeat his opponents. The Muay Kard Chiek fighters of that time were

compared to ferocious tigers since they were allowed toutilize any action to attack and win, no holds barred:punches, elbow and knee strikes, kicks, head butts, jointlocks, strangles, throws, even bites and "claws" against thesoft parts of the opponents were a part of what a gladiatorof that time could employ and was skilled to apply. In Burma Nai Khanom Thom had to face the toughest

challenge of his entire career as a soldier and fighter:

struggling not only for his own life but also to save hiscomrades and to win back freedom. With such a burden on his shoulders, it is told that the

Thai hero succeeded in defeating his opponents one afteranother, leading the fights intelligently, using successfullyhis better footwork and speed of action. The Burmesewere known for the power of their punches and for theirstrength in close combat, so Thom exploited his speed asmuch as possible, striking with kicks, knees and elbows(his bones as hard as iron), against the vital points of hisopponents. The traditional Thai shorts, loincloth style, made his movements easier, allowing him not to be struckby the attacks of the Burmese fighters. Anyway, thelegend says that once all the opponents were defeated, it

Muay Boran

Page 177: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 314 June 2 fortnight – 2016

was King Mangra himself who decided to give freedom tothe Thai hero and to all his fellow soldiers imprisoned withhim. It is said that the King watched amazed the incredibleshow of power by the Siamese fighter and came to say that"every body part of the Thais is poisonous, even withoutweapons they manage to beat their enemies".The positive effect of Nai Khanom Thom’s feat, in addition

to his immediate freedom, was to restore confidence to allthe Thai people, beaten but never dominated. Since then, the figure of that great hero is the symbol of

the indomitable spirit of Thai Martial Arts: the true martialartist is he who puts his sense of honor before his ownpersonal interest, even if that would lead him to withstandgreat sacrifices. The pride of his homeland, of Thai Martial

Arts, of the school where he had been trained and his Masterand of the community of fellow practitioners: these are thevalues for which Nai Khanom Thom fought and therefore hisfigure is still remembered today and worthy of all respect. For centuries, March 17 has been his day and in

Thailand and in the rest of the world, practitioners of anylevel of Muay Thai honor him, today as they have beendoing for centuries. Members of our International Academy IMBA around the

world, on the occasion of this event, regularly gather inAyuddhaya to attend a big ceremony promoted by theAssociation Institute of Thai Martial Arts (AITMA) to payhomage to the figure of the great warrior and to preparenew comers to join the big family of Muay Boran.

Comprehensive or Integral Vovinam is simply going back tothe Founder's true Vovinam. The goal of the founder wasclearly and openly declared: "Harvesting effectivetechniques, assimilate their essence and transform theminto Vovinam techniques", and indeed this concept still

remains in force and is mandatory for all VovinamMasters in the world. Vovinam is then a

research concept to achieve a supereffective style. However, today 90% ofVovinam teachers forget it and bendto a program too loaded, too fixed, too aesthetic and sometimescompletely ineffective innumerous techniques.Comprehensive Vovinam issimply rediscovering theoriginal essence of MasterNguyen Loc's art. For that,we have the principles, thebasic techniques, and wejust have to go back towork out the effective wayof every technique andapply the foundingprinciple. In this DVD, by thehand of Master PatrickLevet, we will study the basisof Integral Vovinam, threatsand knife attacks, integralcounterattacks, and defenseagainst Dam Thang (direct fist) Dam

Moc (hook punch), Dam Lao (javelinpunch) as well as basic leg levers.
