The Secret of Balance in Reaching

    Your Goals

Want to know a success secret that is behind many top achievers and martialartists? Do you want to knock down goalafter goal on your quest to martial artsgreatness? Then read on. Because in thisissue, Im going to reveal a new twist on

goal-setting that might just help youachieve a lot more. In fact, it may completely change the way you think aboutgoals. Read on!

The Two Parts toAchieving a Goal

There are two parts to any goal: thedestination and the journey. The destination,of course, is the end result you want toachieve. Its the next rank, tournament win,new stripe, improved grade, or whatever else youre aiming for.

The journey, on the other hand, is the day-to-day effort you invest in achieving yourgoal. Its all the little steps that make up the

path you take to reach your goal.

I like to think of the destination as the bigpicture and the journey as the details.

    Different Sides

    of the Same Coin

Both parts are important. Theyre like twosides of the same coin. So the key toharnessing the power of goal-setting lies inthe middle . You must always strike a balance between your day-to-day efforts andfocusing on your final goal itself.

If you only focus on the end goal without backing it with action youre simply a

dreamer. On the other hand, if you only gothrough the motions day after day withoutdirection or purpose, youre a drifter. Thesecret of hitting yourgoals is simple: You need to avoid bothextremes: dont be a dreamer or a drifter.

"Goals. There's no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There's no telling what you cando when you believe in them. There's no telling what will happen when you act upon them.' Jim Rohn

Here at Babins Karate for Kidsacademy we spend a lot of time settinggoals and visualizing results. After all, you have to know where youre going inorder to get somewhere. But thismonth, I want to focus on the other sideof the goal-setting coin: I want to talk about the journey .

At first you might be tempted tothink the reason to set a goal is to getthat final outcome you want thenew rank, stripe, better grade, etc. Butoftentimes, you may discover thatsimply walking the path towards yourgoal contains the life-changing benefit youre really after. That your journey is what its all about.

    Take Time toSmell the Flowers

Sometimes we get so wrapped up inachieving big things that we forget tofocus on the moment . John Lennonsaid, Life is what happens to you whileyoure busy making other plans. Inother words, take time to be present with all the little things that make beinga part of Karate for Kids so special. Imtalking about things like

The camaraderie and the greatfriends youve made... the feeling of accomplishment when you walk off thefloor (or mat)the simple routine of tying on your beltthe pride you feel when you move up a ranktheknowledge that youre one of the few people on this earth who are part of anhonorable and ancient martial artslineage. And so on. The day-to-day of being a martial artist.

Big achievers know how to strike a balance between focusing on their long-

term target on the one hand and whatthey have to do on a daily basis tohit that target . They keep the bigpicture foremost in their minds whileat the same time doing whatever it isthey need to do to hit that goal.

Super-achievers know the path is where you grow as a person, increase your skills and thrust yourself to a wholenew level. They also know that in many cases, the true value sometimes liesin the path itself , not just thedestination.

    A Story Youll Recognize

Heres a story to illustrate my point.

Ill use something everybody willrecognize: the classic movie, TheWizard of Oz. As youll recall, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lioneach had a goal in mind. Dorothy wanted to get back home to Kansas. TheScarecrow wanted a brain. The Tin Man wanted a heart and the Lion wantedcourage. After learning the Wizard of Ozcould grant them their wishes, they setout on a journey to meet him.

After many days, they finally stood before the great Oz. They meekly askedhim to grant their wishes. He said, I have every intention of granting your requests. But you must first proveyourself worthy by performing a verysmall task.

And thats where the journey began. After many tests, they finally did

accomplish this small task anddelivered the broomstick to the Wizard.

But they soon discovered the Wizardreally didnt really have the power togrant their wishes. Did that matter? No.They finally realized they themselves

developed these traits while on their journey.

Take the Lion, for example. His goal was to have courage. On the journey, he battled flying monkeys, confronted the

Wicked Witch and faced his fears head-on.

So in the process of going for the goal, he transformed himself.

Thats why the wizard didnt have togive courage to him. The Liondeveloped courage himself. All the Wizard had to do was pin a medal onhim to signify what the Lion went

through and achieved. Thus, the Liondid indeed get his wish in the end butfrom a different source. The journey held the true benefit he was looking for.

Now, you might think this is just asimple childrens story. On the surface,it is. But if you take a deeper look, youllrealize it reveals a very powerful truth:

While you may at first think

your end result is what you want, often youll find that the journeyitself contains the real, yet hidden, value.

    Overcoming Challenges

You may have started at Karate forKids by admiring the black belts in ouracademy and wishing you had that rank, too. And thats great. Thats your end

goal. But keep in mind that a black beltis just like the Lions medal: it stands forall the challenges a black belt hasovercome. Stuff like

All the fears he or she has faced whilerising through the ranks

All the times he or she didnt feellike going to class but pushedthrough anyway

Tournaments they attended, challenging themselves where they squared off against competitors

The times theyve mentored lowerranks and helped them on their own journey

The loyalty, dedication andperseverance theyre shown over the years

The sweat, effort and personalsacrifice they went through to hittheir goals along the way

And all the other challenges theyveovercome on the path to becoming a black belt.

Thats why the rank of black beltmeans so much. Black belts walk the talk.

    Focusing on the Journey

How you handle your journey theday-to-day predicts your success

long-term. You see, many people seta goal, stumble on the journey and giveup. They lose sight of the reasons they set the goal in the first place, forget topractice on a daily basis or neverdevelop the perseverance to hit theirtarget. There are a million reasonssome people dont achieve much.Basically, it boils down to this

They dont pay the price on a daily

basis to get what they want.

The Journey Separates TheSerious From the Curious.

How people handle the journey tells

you a lot about their intentions. Do they put in the effort? Do they do what it takesto get to their goal? Are they all talk? Ordo they back it with action?

A wise man once said, The secret of your future is hidden in your dailyroutine."

Your Daily Habits Do Set You Up for Success

The key to having a successful journey is in your daily habits .

So I have some questions for you: What do you do in your daily routine? Isit moving you closer or farther away from your goal? What are you going to dotoday to get one step nearer to your goal? What specific actions are you going totake? All you really have is today. Whatare you going to do with it?

Its not enough to talk. Anybody cando that. Its the doing thats the hardpart. The journey is where you test yourself to the limit. Be realistic in yourgoals and back them with physicalactions on a daily basis that propel

you to your goal, step by step.

    No, the Journey Isnt AlwaysGlamorous

Its often said that The world wantsto see the baby, but they dont want tohear about the labor pains. Thats anapt metaphor because you really are

giving birth to a new person along your journey. Just like a snake shedding itsskin, when you complete the path, you will emerge a different person.

    Dont believe me?

Then I challenge you to think back tothe very first day you started as a white belt. What were you like then? Were you the same person? Of course not. It was the day-in-day-out thatchanged you . Little by little, youtransformed yourself into a new person a true martial artist. You may nothave noticed the changes while they were happening, but they are real andthey add up.

    Your MonthlyCall to Action

This month, I want you to focus on your daily routine . How can youchange it to help you reach your goals?Think about all the little things you cando every day to get one step closer to your goal. Of course, dont forget aboutthe big picture, either. Remember tokeep a balance between focusing on yourtarget (goal) and doing what it takes toget there .
