WHAT DOES A MAP SHOW?

2nd Grade

Standard

H.SS 2.2.2Label from memory a simple map of the

North American continent, including the countries of Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Also, label the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.

Objective

Students will label the following places on a map of the North American continent. They are Canada, Mexico, United States, Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.

Big Idea

A map has many features such as title, map legend, compass rose, scale, and date. These features help us read maps.

A map of the North American continent can include countries, oceans, lakes, rivers, and mountain ranges.

Prior Knowledge

Ask students if they have ever been on a car trip where the driver used a map to find where they were going

Ask about other times they used a map to find where they were going

Key Vocabulary

A title is a name given to something.A continent is one of the seven main parts of

land on earth.A compass rose shows directions on a map.A map legend tells what the symbols on a

map.A scale tells what a small distance on a map

equals in miles and kilometers.

Assessment
