Resident Snapshot

Born on April 1st, he will be the first to tell you, that is why he is like he is. Or maybe, it was the accident he had minutes after paying for his Life Insurance that left him DOA, until he woke up in the hospital, surprising everyone!

Dean was born outside of Hamburg, Oregon where his family had no running water or plumbing. Dean and his two sisters all rode 5 miles to school on one horse each day. During his 8th grade year, his family moved to Pilot Rock, Oregon.

Dean worked all through high school at the local factories and building homes in the summer. After high school he joined the Army and trained as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. Upon returning he married his wife (of 56 years), worked for Coca-Cola as a truck driver till he eventually opened his own construction company. He built his own home in Pendleton where he and his wife raised their 2 daughters. When health issues made it hard to continue with construction, Dean opened his own locksmith business.

Upon retiring, he and his wife sold everything, bought a 5th wheel, became snowbirds and spent the winters in Yuma, Arizona.

Dean has been at the Courtyard for 7 years and enjoys helping other residents when they need help with small repairs. He enjoys the conveniences of the Courtyard being near many stores and his weekly visits with his daughter.

A married couple was in a terrible accident where the man's face was severely burned. The doctor told the husband that they couldn't graft any skin from his body because he was too skinny. So the wife offered to donate some of her own skin. However, the only skin on her body that the doctor felt was suitable would have to come from her buttocks. Owing to the sensitive nature of the situation...they all agreed that they would tell no one about where the skin came from. After the surgery.....everyone was astounded at the man's new face. He looked more handsome than ever! All his friends and relatives raved about his youthful appearance...especially his mother! One day while alone with his wife and overcome with emotion at her sacrifice, he said, “Dear, I just want to thank you for everything you did for me. How can I possibly repay you?” ''My darling,” she replied, “I get all the thanks I need every time I see your mother kiss you on the cheek.”

Huber’s, Portland’s oldest bar and restaurant. Huber's was established in 1879 at the corner of 1st and Morrison in downtown Portland, Oregon. It was originally called "The Bureau Saloon" until it was purchased by Mr. Frank Huber and the name was changed to Huber's. In 1891, Mr. Huber hired Jim Louie, a Chinese immigrant, to do the cooking. In those days, if you bought a drink, you would get a free turkey sandwich and some coleslaw. With just a few booths and bench seats in the old bar, most of the patrons would go around and converse with a drink in one hand and a turkey sandwich in the other. This is how the turkey tradition started at Huber's. Come with us to this fabulous place. There will be separate checks.

Class Descriptions:

Balance & Flexibility (40 minutes): Balance & flexibility class focuses on increasing participants flexibility, balance,

range of motion, and coordination. This class focuses on bodyweight movements using bands, dowels rods and balls at

times. Your heart rate will also climb just enough to get the blood flowing. We want you to feel how your body is

working for you. Levels 1 and 2 are available.

Heart Healthy & Movement (40 minutes): This class is for the active adult and will focus on raising your heart rate

with functional yet challenging aerobic type movements and coordination. On occasion some dance movements and

easy routines are used as warm ups for this class. This class will use balls, bands and occasionally weights. Levels 1

and 2 are available.

Gayle’s Gold Music & Movement : (20-30 minutes) Come get jiggy with your Fitness Coordinator and a chair near

you to rest if needed. Enjoy some basic dance routines from modified Zumba Gold to some basic line dancing and

music movement. This class would benefit cardiovascular health, cognitive thinking and balance.

Courtyard Tappers—Seated Tap Dance (45 minutes): The Summit room studio will host this seated tap

dancing class open to beginners and experienced tap dancers. The first half of the class focuses on tap

technique exercises while the second half combines moves to create a tap routine. The tappers meet the 2nd and the

4th Wednesday of the month.

Tone and Core (45 minutes): Tone and Core is for the active adult who wants to increase muscle tone and focus on

the core. This class is an important class to attend to help you build muscle. It is designed to increase the participants

muscular strength, core strength and joint stability. Equipment used for this class will vary and may include hand held

weights, balls and elastic bands, for the resistance portions of this class. The format changes a bit on Fridays as a way

to keep interest level up, encourage individual growth, peer support and teamwork. Levels 1 and 2 are available.

Fitness with Michele (45 minutes): This class is a combination of flexibility, balance and chair aerobics. Be ready for

upbeat tunes and a fun time!

Sit & Be Fit Fitness Video (30 minutes): Saturday mornings, a fitness video will be play in the Summit room which

will guide participants through seated total body workout.

Tai Chi (40 minutes): This class may be done seated or standing. Although Tai Chi is slow and gentle and doesn’t

leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness - muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and, to a lesser

degree, aerobic conditioning. Levels 1: Level 1 is designed for anyone looking to challenge themselves cardio wise, strength wise and involves

some easy dance and balance movements and stands more than level 2.

Level 2 : Level 2 is geared towards the participant that might have painful joints, arthritis, hip replacements and

general stiffness. A great class for anyone that is new to fitness or unsure of where to start.

One on Ones: Meet with Gayle (Our Fitness Coordinator) for individual 15 minute sessions. Sign up on fitness door.

Floor Stretch Class: For residents that feel comfortable (with a chair near you) stretching on a mat, on the floor. We

get down on the mats one time and up when we finish. Great full body basic stretching class geared especially for our

residents. Gayle teaches this class with a therapeutic approach that opens the joints and safely stretches muscles.

Bring a towel and/0r pillow to this class for head support.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, emotions, bodily

sensations, and surrounding environment with openness and curiosity. This 15 minute session helps you to use your

breath to be more mindful.
