Delicious, mouth watering, seasoned perfectly, cooked to perfection, with each enticing bite begging for another. It is pure delight to eat the fresh appetizing food grilled just right over an open fire with a beautiful blend of hardwoods to provide the enhanced taste of fruitwood blended with just the right spices. The finest food prepared by the most experienced chefs to make for an overwhelming dining experience of the best cooked food money can buy! Nothing better than the liberty to eat out by dining in! However, despite the joy and pleasure found in every savory bite, everything is just not perfect in Corinth. Sadly, despite being the finest and best place to eat in and to dine out in Corinth, every diner is surrounded by symbols of pagan Idolatry. The cooks, servers and servants are all in the employ of the pagan temple. Even more unsettling and detestable, the majority of the pagan Idol’s priests and priestesses are really nothing more than prostitutes. But no matter, because as a strong christian in Corinth, it is understood that Idols are not God, Idolatry means nothing, and only God is God and there is none other! And just as the apostle Paul proclaimed, God created all food to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth (I Timothy 4:3- 5). Paul, in addressing the Corinthian christians, declared, “Therefore concerning the eating of things offered to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live” (I Corinthians 8:4-6). But Paul doesn’t stop his instructions to the Corinthians, he goes on and says, “However, there is not in everyone that knowledge; for some, with consciousness of the idol, until now eat it as a thing offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled (I Corinthians 8:4-6). And then in verses 9 and 10, Paul addresses an issue that arises because christians used their liberty to eat out by dining in a pagan temple. “But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols?” The liberty to eat out by dining in an Idol’s temple is an option in life that must never be utilized to create a problem for brethren who don’t see things the way we do. Paul put it this way, And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble (I Corinthians 8:11-13). It is easy for us to feel very strongly and be selfish about our liberties and our knowledge. And it is so easy to forget about the feelings and thoughts of others who are not as knowledgeable nor see things the way we do. Thus, it becomes a challenge to yield to those who don’t think like we do by surrendering our “liberty to eat out by dining in.” But as loving children of God, Paul declares we must “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another” (Romans 12:10). I wonder how many Corinthian christians sorely missed the sizzle and smoke of the grill for the sake of their brethren? I did not buy it: It was given to me without price, but the donor purchased it at a tremendous sacrifice to himself. I am not holding it for speculation, since the title is not transferable. He has stuck by me constantly since we first met 55 years ago, and I hold His promise in printed form, never to leave me alone. He will be with me as I walk through the valley of the shadows: I shall not lose my way….ever.” (Author Unknown)

Liberty to Eat Out by Dining In

I Corinthians 8:9 But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak.

And just as the apostle Paul proclaimed, God created all food to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth (I Timothy 4:3-5).

For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things offered to idols?”

The liberty to eat out by dining in an Idol’s temple is an option in life that must never be utilized to create a problem for brethren who don’t see things the way we do. Paul put it this way, “And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
