I hope that you and your child feel confidentin their return to on-campus learning thisweek.

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity tothank you for all for your support andconstant communication over the past fiveweeks of remote learning. The persistence Ihave seen from both students and parents

has been truly inspiring, and it has been a valuable experienceto upskill ourselves around new challenges, that this learningenvironment has presented us with.

We are excited to have students back on campus and tosupport them with their learning and re-establishing routines tobe ready for success.

For MMM this week, in Monday & Tuesday’s lessons, wefocused on building our understanding on the following areas:reiterating good hygiene practices, supporting studentwellbeing, organisation and focus, and assessment preparationand planning. I will continue to upload MMM PowerPoints andresources so that students can access them on the StudentSharePoint here: https://qedu.sharepoint.com/sites/2176/Students

With the return to on-campus learning, we will be holding JuniorStudy Group face-to-face every Monday afternoon from2:45pm to 3:45pm in the Marsden SHS Library.

For Junior Students who are feeling nervous about returning toschool, feel free to come and hang out with Mrs Proctor andMr Wilson (Life Coaches) and Jane (Social Worker Intern) intheir offices from 8am every morning this week. They will bringalong some games and provide a space to chill out before yourschool day commences. Hope to see you there!

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’sreturn, please get in touch and I will assist in any way I can.

Welcome to week 6, which sees the returnto school for all students.

I would like to take this opportunity toTHANK everyone for their commitment tolearning@home, whether through physicalworkbooks or online learning. It has been avery strange and different journey that we’vebeen on with COVID-19, and although the

pandemic is not over, we will return to at least some level ofnormality in returning to school. I know times have been tough, but appreciate your determination to get through it andpersistence to assist your children to continue their learningwhilst off campus. For everyone who helped, supported, guided, mentored, or assisted in any capacity you could, Isincerely thank you..

We are excited to have students return to school and we wantstudents to be on track with their studies and continue buildingknowledge to progress towards their assessment at the end ofthe term.

Week 6, MMM focus is about reinforcing good hygiene andwellbeing, organisation and focus with getting back intoroutines and mapping assessment preparation and planning.

We are identifying and working on these three questions:

During Monday and Tuesday’s MMM lessons, students wereprovided with a blank assessment schedule to fill in for the next5 weeks at school, to map their learning goals and assessmentrequirements. This may be a great talking point for families tosee where students are at now, and where they need to be toobtain successful outcomes with each of their subjects. This isa document that students should store in a safe place, to referto and update regularly.

In week 7, we will extend on these questions by looking atcharacter strengths, resilience and creating a growth mindset.

Please make sure you inform the school if you have chosento keep your children home between now and the end ofterm and refer to the Government resources available, whichwas outlined in the recent communication from our ExecutivePrincipal, Andrew Peach.

I will continue to update MMM on OneNote for students to workon if they remain at home.

If students need to do some catching up, filling in some gapsor require some additional Teacher support, we will be holdingJunior Study Group face-to-face again every Monday afternoonfrom 2:45-3:45pm in the Marsden SHS Library.

I hope students enjoy being back on campus, and I have alsoenjoyed checking in with students and classes the past fewdays. Overall, the uniform is looking good so far and it’s nice tosee the enthusiasm of students learning in classrooms.

Please continue to stay safe and look after one another.

I have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming theYear 10 students back to school this weekafter five weeks of engaging with thelearning@home activities. It has beenfantastic to see all students engaging inclassroom activities and I look forward toseeing this continue throughout the rest ofthis year.

Learning as a priorityLearning as a priority

It is important that Year 10’s continue to put their best footforward by engaging in active learning and giving it 100% inclass. Their teachers will assist them upon return, but studentshave to have a resilient mindset and trust that if they continueto complete set tasks and do the right thing, they will be ontrack. We don’t have time to waste, so for learning to bethe priority in every classroom, students have to be organisedwith their binder, planner, paper, and writing equipment, followteacher’s instructions, ask questions and seek feedback, andbe prepared.

Expectations and routineExpectations and routine

Our school expectations have not changed, Year 10 studentsneed to make sure they are setting a strong example for others.Students need to continue to uphold our uniform policy andensure they have the correct uniform (including shoes – blackleather with laces). Hair colour and cut are to be natural, nonose piercings or incorrect/multiple earrings per ear. Studentsneed to continue to make sure they arrive on time to classes, and plan out what their week looks like with their MMMteachers Monday morning.

WellbeingWellbeing

With all students returning to school this week, it is importantfor students to be mindful of their own emotions and of thosearound them. This has been an uncertain time for all of us, soit is important we come together as a school community tosupport each other. One of the focuses of our MMM programover the coming weeks centres around mindfulness. Accordingto Headspace, mindfulness is ‘the quality of being present andfully engaged with whatever we are doing at the moment — freefrom distraction or judgment, and aware of our thoughts andfeelings without getting caught up in them.’ One way to formallypractice and cultivate mindfulness is through meditation -where you sit and focus on your breathing or the sensationsexperienced within your body. The scientific benefits behindmindfulness are explored by Associate Professor Dr CraigHassed in the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsXxvPWd_k4&feature=emb_logo

Why not engage with the Smiling Mind Mindfulness program, which explores exercises designed to reduce stress andpromote positive wellbeing with your child? You can find moreinformation about the programsat https://www.smilingmind.com.au/

School Captain Achieves Top Marks in ATARSchool Captain Achieves Top Marks in ATAREnglishEnglish

The English faculty have been working hard to give Marsdenstudents the best opportunities at realising their Universitydreams. Year 12 English students embarked on their ATARstudies at the end of Year 11, with arguably the mostchallenging piece of their English studies in all of their schooling.Students’ learning included a deep analysis of a novel andmedia article study.

We are proud to announce that the QCAA approved SchoolCaptain Lyvante Su’Emai’s achievement of full marks (25/25)for this piece; an amazing result considering it is the firstassessment submitted in the new ATAR system.Congratulations to Lyvante and her English teacher, Mrs Bell, for this impressive achievement.

Below is what 25/25 looks like in Year 12 English. This is anespecially helpful read for Year 11 General English studentswho are studying a piece much like this one.

HOD UpdateHOD Update

Welcome to Week 6, I hope your student has made thetransition back to normal school routines from online learning.

It is great to have the students back in the classroom andbeing part of the Marsden community again.

HumanitiesHumanities

Junior Humanities students, The next few weeks are crucial inmaintaining routines and completing assessment tasks ontime. Year 10 students should also be in the process ofcompleting assessments or preparing for the upcomingexams, depending on which subject in Humanities they havechosen. For seniors, year 11 and 12 most should be in theprocess of completing assessment and working towards thenext unit of work.

Our first ever confirmation of year 12 work for the first internalassessment occurred a few weeks ago with the results beingreturned. A big congratulations to the staff involved in markingthese assessments, as we have had only 1 movement out of 7classes, and it was only a slight change. It is a mammoth effortto make sure that not only marking is accurate and moderationoccurs with the added stress of disruption to learning in theprocess, well done staff and students!

Reminder of Junior Humanities due dates:

Elective subjects: teachers have informed students of duedates and assessment – most assessment/exams will be duein week 7/8.

Languages UpdateLanguages Update

The language department is growing in not only numbers butalso in staff. We have now increased Year 9 and 10 classesand now have 7 Chinese teachers on staff! It has been verybusy behind the scenes, writing assessment and curriculumplanning for the Australian curriculum in 2021.

We are still waiting for the funding for Confucius classroom tobe able to set up our class. Once we have this we have bigplans in place for B05 – with the Art department creating ahuge mural and construction to create a Confucius styleclassroom. Hopefully this will be sorted by the end of the year

• Senior Jersey/Jackets: we are placing the final orderthis week! There will not be another order after this.

• Arrival to school: students are expected to arrive ontime each day. This allows them to maximise theirlearning, and gives students a valuable life skill forpost schooling pathways.

You’ve probably heard someone along the way tell you that it’s“important to be optimistic”. Sound familiar? Well, that basicallymeans that you should focus on the good things that can comefrom a situation or life in general. Therefore, Optimism prettymuch comes from that. It is when you expect future events toturn out for the best. It’s about harnessing positive thoughtsand trying to find the upbeat side to every situation.

Logan District Police wouldlike to remind all motoriststhat all grades of school havereturned to education thisweek, so we please ask thatyou pay particular attentionwhen driving in or around

◦ See the future

◦ Spend 10 minutes thinking about your best possiblefuture self. Visualise what life might be like for you in5 or 10 years from now. Where do you live? Who iswith you? Where have you travelled?

◦ Think about all of these and more and write down theanswers. Sound cheesy? It may feel like that at first, but push through…you’ll feel the results in no time!

◦ Start a Goals Diary

◦ Keep a diary of your major goals, and then split themup into smaller goals. This is a great way to keep upyour optimistic thinking.

◦ Use a Problem-Solving Toolkit. When problems arisetry these: Don’t blow things out of proportion. Seethe problem as temporary – something that can besolved and contained.
