Marriotts Weekly News Aim high. Work hard. Be kind. 5 th July 2019 Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Families It continues to be a busy and productive time at Marriotts. It was fantastic to see our Year 11s at their Leavers’ assembly and Prom. As a staff we have seen their journeys from Year 7, across the school becoming successful young adults. It was wonderful to see them and their families celebrating. They looked so smart and as a school we were so proud. I hope you have a great weekend. Kind regards Ms B Honnor Headteacher Year 11 Prom On Thursday we celebrated our Year 11s final day at Marriotts School with their Leavers’ Assembly and Prom. It was an emotional day for both students and staff alike, and was the perfect way to celebrate all their hard work and achievements. We look forward to the 22nd August when they will collect their final GCSE results. Trip to Magdalene College, University of Cambridge On Friday 28 th June a group of Marriotts Year 10 linguists visited Magdalene College, University of Cambridge for a workshop day attended by several invited schools. The students initially heard a lecture about the benefits of studying a foreign language at GCSE, A level and degree level; not only the benefits relating to global citizenship and career prospects, but also the positive impact of language learning on brain function and lifestyle. They were also able to recognise the differences between a career as a professional linguist and alternative careers where linguistic ability supports successful recruitment and advancement. The students were then able to participate in a selection of individual seminars, firstly in the language that they are studying for their GCSE and then taster sessions in Portugese, Russian and Chinese. Finally students met with some Cambridge undergraduates for a Question and Answer session and learned about life at university, from accommodation, social life and extra-curricular societies to the vast array of subject options.

Big Bang Eastern Fair 2019 On 4 July, 2019, fifteen of our students from year 8 and 9 visited the Big Bang Fair Eastern at the University of Hertfordshire. This annual event provides an excellent opportunity for students to attend interesting demonstrations and talks and even try their hand at activities that are all designed to promote engagement with science, technology, engineering and maths. The fair is well-supported by a number of local and national companies and students were able to learn more about careers as wide ranging as paramedics and racing cars, rockets and delivering the vital water and electricity supplies to our house. Our students represented the school well with perfect behaviour and asking great questions of the people that they met at the stands and demonstrations. The question most asked on the journey home was “Can we go again next year?”.

Word of the Week As part of the school's drive to advance the reading skills of every student we are focusing on broadening vocabulary by teaching key academic words explicitly in class. To support this, we have introduced a 'Word of the Week' (WoW) that features key, high-frequency words used by all faculties across the school. The aim is to use these words as much as possible to ensure that the precise meaning is embedded to allow students to use these words in academic writing and talk in their subjects. Please support your child and the school by using this word at home and challenging your child to use it accurately.

The WoW for w/c Monday 8th July is: contrast

1. the state of being strikingly different from something else

e.g. the day began cold and blustery, in contrast to almost two weeks of uninterrupted sunshine.

2. differences in colour, tone, or shape that contribute to the visual effect of a design or image. e.g. the blue and yellow contrast beautifully in that painting.

3. Verb: To differ strikingly. e.g. his friend’s success contrasted with his own failure

Rewards and Recognition Teachers regularly issue Achievement Points to students who are Aiming High, Working Hard or Being Kind. Rewards and recognition of achievement are given out through Achievement Points, which are given each week we would like to congratulate the following students who have received Green slips.

Precision fielding from the rest of the team and good bowling brought the trophy home for the boys. We would like to congratulate the following students on their performance: Harry, Conor, Joe, Owen, Ayaan and Alesio
