A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL And particularly to the officials, players and supporters of Cinderford Town who are here this afternoon for this first Emirates FA Cup match of the 2019-2020 season. Cinderford currently play in The BetVictor Southern League division one south and so far have played 2 games over the past week – winning 3-1 at home to Cirencester Town last Saturday and then losing by the same scoreline away to Paulton Rovers on Tuesday.

Should a replay become necessary it will take place at Cinderford on Tuesday 3rd September so as not to disturb the full fixture list for this coming Bank Holiday Monday in both our leagues.

Last season was again one of our most successful in recent times and ended with that 1-2 defeat away Cheshunt who went on to win the play-off final at Bracknell Town and so ended in disappointing fashion (and the injury to Isaac Osei-Tutu which he is still suffering with). In the break Barts has been busy as usual and although we have lost a couple of players he has managed to recruit what look to be very adequate replacements and we welcome all those new faces to Oak Tree Road and look forward to them enjoying a successful time with us.

Many thanks for coming this afternoon, and hopefully throughout the season ahead, which we now look forward to. We are back in league action on Monday here against neighbours Chalfont St. Peter so please try to get along.

Now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do particularly over the coming months.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN

Happy Birthday to the National League! The NLP office was in absolute overdrive last week as we celebrated 40 years of the National League.

It was while producing our special eight-page pull-out that it truly dawned upon us just how many extraordinary tales and history this division has created; so much so that we ended up writing far too much and spent most of Friday evening frantically trying to cut down word counts and squeeze in as many stories as we possible could!

There were interviews with the likes of Martin O’Neil and Neil Warnock, who both learned their trade in Non-League’s highest tier, however for me, I particularly enjoyed speaking to Peter Hunter, who was secretary of the division when the one up, one down agreement was made with the Football League.

It was during this conversation that I realised just how important the agreement made in 1987 was for both advancing the quality of the division and streamlining the entire Non-League pyramid.

Before then clubs had to apply for a place in the Football League, with just one position up for grabs.

At the time it seems as though this application process was a largely futile event for Non-League clubs to be a part of, with the bottom placed Football League club more often than not coming out on top in the lottery.

In many respects there was essentially a permanent divide between the Football League and Non-League – with the fairy tale dream of a team rising through from obscurity to break into the upper echelons of the English system seeming virtually impossible.

Page 5: MARLOW · the 2019-2020 season. Cinderford currently play in The BetVictor Southern League division one south and so far have played 2 games over the past week – winning 3-1 at

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN It is amazing to see just what an impact the promotion and relegation agreement has had on Non-League football.

Teams can now dare to dream of making a run through the divisions, while the guarantee of Football League clubs making the plunge into Non-League each year has increased both the quality and the fan base within the National League.

Nowadays, especially with the introduction of two up, two down, the division is in extraordinary health and with attendance records being broken and the likes of Tranmere Rovers using promotion from the National League as a springboard for further success, the future of the league is looking bright!

New documentary proves fascinating watching I would recommend all Non-League fans watch “The Gaffer” on BT Sport this Saturday (24th August) evening.

The documentary follows coaches such as Harrogate’s Simon Weaver, Bromley boss Neil Smith, lower league legend John Still and his protégé Hakan Hayrettin at Maidstone, as well as Ben Strevens and Hartlepool boss Craig Hignett. It contains some really fascinating moments that demonstrate just what an important role these clubs play within their local community and how the work for a manager most certainly never, ever stops!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF CINDERFORD TOWN AFC

Cinderford Town was formed in 1922 and played in the Gloucester Northern Senior League until 1939. In that year they joined the newly formed Bristol Charity League, but this folded two weeks later at the outbreak of World War Two. In 1957 they won the title but the two seasons they spend in the topflight put severe financial pressure on the club, who were forced to withdraw and return to the Gloucester Northern Senior League.

Three years later the club made the unusual decision to join the Warwickshire Combination and won a league and cup double in 1964, which saw them step up to the West Midlands (Regional) League.

Cinderford returned to play in the newly formed Gloucestershire County League for the 1969-70 season and stayed for the next five years, finishing as runners-up on three occasions, but again sought a higher standard of football and were accepted into the Midland Football Combination. Town played in this league for the next 10 seasons, achieving a best finish of 4th, before being forced to withdraw and return to the Gloucestershire County League after more financial problems.

In the 1990-91 season the club gained admission to the Hellenic League, initially in Division One, where they won the league championship at the first attempt. Four years later the club claimed the Premier Division title and stepped up to the Southern League, where they remain to this day.

The 1995–96 season saw Cinderford reach the first round of the FA Cup for the first time. After beating Bromsgrove Rovers 2–1, they lost 3–0 at Gravesend & Northfleet in a second-round replay.

In the 2015-16 season, they were champions of the Southern League Division One South & West but initially rejected

promotion on financial grounds. However, they were forced to accept promotion, in June 2016, following a series of appeals which affected the constitution of the Southern League heading into the new season.
