SEASON KICK-OFF The Marlins open the 2015 Championship Season this afternoon with RHP Henderson Alvarez taking on RHP Julio Teheran and the Atlanta Braves at 4:10 p.m. Today’s game will begin the 23 rd overall season in Marlins history and fourth since moving into Marlins Park. Miami is com- ing off a 2014 season that saw a 15-win improvement over its previous season, going 77-85 and finishing fourth in the National League East. The Marlins own an 11-11 record on Opening Day following last year’s 10-1 win over the Colorado Rockies at Marlins Park. This afternoon’s contest will mark the 17 th time the Marlins have opened the season schedule at their home park, going 10-6 when playing Game One of the season at home, including a 5-1 mark in the last six. This will be just the second meeting between Miami and Atlanta on Opening Day. The two last opened the season on April 5, 2005 at Dolphin Stadium, with the Marlins shutting out the Braves, 9-0. THE ENTERTAINER’S OPENING ACT Henderson Alvarez is making his first career Opening Day start, and is the 13 th different pitcher in Marlins history to get the call in the season opener. He is the first Venezuelan-born pitcher to make an Opening Day start for Miami, and the 11 th ever to make an Opening Day start in Major League history. The most current starter from Venezuela is Felix Hernandez, who has started each of the last seven openers for the Seattle Mariners (including today). There has been at-least one Opening Day starter from Venezuela in each of the last 15 seasons dating back to 2001. - Stats, LLC OUT OF THE GATE Miami is batting .265 as a team on Opening Day, a mark that was improved greatly after last year’s 14-hit attack against Colorado. The 14 hits in last season’s opener tied a Club record for the most on Opening Day, equaling totals from 1998 and the inaugural game in 1993. The pitchers have recorded a 3.55 ERA (197.2 ip/77 er) with 87 walks and 146 strikeouts all-time in Game One of the season. The most strikeouts recorded by a Marlins team in a season open- er is 11, done on April 6, 2004 vs. Montreal, followed by a 10-strikeout performance against Colorado last season. LATE START April 6 is the latest the Marlins have ever started a season, also doing so two times prior to the 2015 season. The Fish have posted a 2-0 record in those games, taking down the Montreal Expos, 4-3, in 2004, and the Washington Nation- als, 12-6, in 2009. FREE RANGE Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Giancarlo Stanton are the first Marlins outfield trio to make consecutive Open- ing Day starts since Jeff Conine, Chuck Carr and Gary Sheffield in 1994-95. Last season, the triumvirate combined on a .280 average, 255 runs scored, 87 doubles, 12 triples, 69 home runs and 244 RBI. Miami’s trio was the first outfield with an average age younger than 24 to put up such numbers since the 1987 Texas Rangers, when Ruben Sierra, Oddibe McDowell and Pete Incaviglia averaged 23 years, 171 days and had 71 homers, 241 RBI and 247 runs scored for the season. - Stats, LLC RED DAWN BREAKING In two years at the helm of the Marlins, Mike Redmond has amassed a 139-185 record, already tied for the fifth most games as manager in Marlins history (with Jim Leyland). In 2014, he guided the Club to an historic turnaround from their 100-loss campaign in 2013. Miami won 77 games last season, making Redmond just the seventh manager in MLB history to lose 100 games in his first season and improve by 15-plus wins in his second season (same team only). Additionally, only two other NL teams since 1969 have recovered from a 100-loss season to win 77-plus games the next year: the 1986 Giants (83 wins) and the 2005 Diamondbacks (77). Following the season, Miami extended Red- mond’s contract through the 2017 season. OPENING DAY ROSTER The Miami Marlins yesterday announced their 2015 Opening Day 25-man roster, breaking camp with 12 pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielders. SPRING RECAP Miami finished its Grapefruit League slate with a 14-12-1 record, finishing in 5 th place, 2.5 games behind the 19-12 New York Mets. The Marlins hit .265 over their 27 games, scoring 122 runs while connecting for 16 home runs. The pitching staff combined on the sixth-lowest ERA among National League teams at 4.26 ERA (235.0 IP/111 ER) with seven saves. OPENING DAY INFO Marlins Park will open its gates to all fans starting at 2:00 p.m., with an on-field awards presentation slated for 3:30. Six former Marlins’ All-Stars will complete an around-the-horn ceremonial first pitch in honor of the January announcement that Marlins Park will host the 2017 All-Star Game. Carl Pavano (2004 All-Star), Charles Johnson (1997, ’01), Mike Lowell (’02-04, ’07), Alex Gonzalez (’99), Luis Castillo (’02-03, ’05) and Jeff Conine (’94-95) will take part in the first pitch. Henderson Alvarez will make his first career Opening Day start following a 2014 campaign in which he went 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA in 30 starts. His ERA ranked as the sixth-lowest among National League starters, and fifth-lowest in Marlins history. Additionally, his 1.60 ERA at home led the Majors and was the third-lowest in Club history.

He will become the 13th different Opening Day starter in Franchise history and first from Venezuela. He is the 11th Venezuelan-born pitch-er to make an OD start, and first since Felix Hernandez, who has started each of the last six openers for the Seattle Mariners. Went 7-3 with a 2.20 ERA (114.2/28) in 18 starts vs. the NL East last season. His ERA vs. division opponents was the third-lowest single-season ERA against the NL East since 1994, behind Roy Halladay (1.61 in 2010) and Jair Jurrjens (1.69 in 2009). – STATS LLC

According to Elias, the Marlins set a Club record by winning 10 straight games started by Alvarez from May 16-July 6, surpassing a stretch of nine straight wins in starts by Chris Hammond from May 19-July 2, 1993.

Became one of six players over the last 20 years with at least five shutouts before their age-25 season. Alvarez, Clayton Kershaw, Derek Holland, Mark Mulder and Javier Vazquez have five each. Dontrelle Willis had eight.

He tied Adam Wainwright and Rick Porcello for the MLB lead with three shut-outs in 2014. He was also tied with four others for seventh in complete games (3), behind Clayton Kershaw (6), Dallas Keuchel and Adam Wainwright (5 each), and Johnny Cueto, Madison Bumgarner and Julio Teheran (4 each).

Last season, he shut out Seattle on April 19, the Mets on May 6 and the Rays on June 3. With the Tampa Bay shutout, became the first pitcher in MLB history to toss three consecutive shutouts in Interleague play (first IL shutout was no-hitter vs. Detroit on Sept. 29, 2013).

Ranked second among Major League starters in fewest pitches per inning (14.0), trailing only Clayton Kershaw (13.7). Since 2012, has average just 14.5 pitches per inning, tied with Bronson Arroyo, Clayton Kershaw and Bartolo Colon for second behind Hisashi Iwakuma (14.4).
