Up & ComingJubilee Square links the North Laine and the Royal Pavilion andforms a central part of Brighton’s Cultural Quarter. The librarywon 10 awards the year it opened and is one of the mostenergy efficient public buildings in the country, emitting half asmuch carbon dioxide as buildings of comparable size. Thepiazza style square includes cafés, bars, restaurants, shops, offices and a boutique hotel, ideal for a 24 hour urban lifestyle.
Marlborough Place is part of the proposed Valley Gardensproject to create a pedestrianised boulevard from the RoyalPavilion heading north towards St Peters Church - for moreinformation visit:http://www.urbanmovement.co.uk/brighton-vg_projects_urd.html
Following in Jubilee Square’s footsteps, the nearby CircusStreet redevelopment is creating a vibrant new quarter ofthe city, an economically and creatively productiveneighbourhood where art and culture sit alongside modernliving and hi-tech start up businesses.
It will deliver two landmark public buildings: The DanceSpace, which will be a hub that connects world class artiststo the local community and a University Library andAcademic building, including a café, media centre andpublicly accessible exhibition space.
The scheme will also deliver a modern office building includingover 3,000 sqm of flexible office space to help growingcreative and digital businesses remain and flourish in the city.
Local HistoryThe Lanes & The Royal PavilionA ‘laine’ is an old Sussex term for a piece of land at the footof the Downs. The area that is now The Lanes was part ofthe original settlement of Brighthelmstone, built up duringthe late 18th century. In 1977, Ken Fines, Borough PlanningOfficer, saved the northern most Lanes from extensiveredevelopment that could have seen existing buildingsbeing replaced by new high-rise buildings, a flyover and alarge car park. Fines felt the area had charm, and pressuredthe local council to retain it, designating it the North LaineConservation Area, after the historic name.
Today you can see four hundred year-old fishermen'scottages sitting alongside cosy pubs and brick-pavedtwittens, boutique shops and the exotic Royal Pavilion, builtfor King George IV as a seaside pleasure palace, mixingregal splendour with an Indian exterior and internallydecorated with lavish Chinese stylings.
