Mrs Rodney has been a big part of this school community for a number of years not only as a teacher, but also as secretary of our P&C. With Mrs Rodney departing our lovely school, it will leave a big hole in our school community with the quality of work being completed by the students certainly improving under Mrs Rodneys guidance. As for the replacement for Mrs Rodney, a selection process is currently underway with the job being advertised on the Queensland Governments job vacancy website Smart Jobs. The job is advertised until March 22nd with a decision on the successful applicant to occur straight away. School Crossing Dennis Street At the start of the school year the Western Downs Regional Council re sealed Dennis Street which in turn covered up the painted zebra crossing that so many people use before and after school. The council contacted the school on Tuesday saying the zebra crossing along Dennis Street will be re painted as soon as possible. Western Downs Regional Council explained that they are waiting for the line marking contractors to visit the area and it will be a priority to get it marked in the future. Bell Triathlon Preparations are currently underway for the 2nd Bell Triathlon on Saturday 23rd March. Last years event was very successful with about 120 competitors. If you are able to assist in the preparation or volunteer on the day please let Brendan Fullagar know or anyone on the P&C and Swim Clubs to ensure we can continue to build this event for the future. It was great seeing so many students compete in the event so with a few weeks remaining its not too late to get some training in. Have a good week, Jason. Bell State School P&C Secretary Position Vacancy At our 2019 P&C AGM the position of Secretary will be vacant. The Custodios, an extremely hard working family of six, originally from the Philippines, have been deemed as not satisfying migration regulations. Their son, Gain, a Year 6 student has autism and it is his health needs that apparently precludes them from satisfying these regulations. The community of Bell values this amazing family and feels they should be granted permanent residency as they have been committed to our small town since 2014. Granting a visa to Gain will not prejudice the access of an Australian citizen or permanent resident to health care or community services but will allow them to stay and flourish as valued members of our school and our town. Sadly, under the department's 'one out, all out' system the denial of Gain's visa means that all of the Custodio family will have to return to the Philippines if their appeal is denied! This means our small, rural school will lose four valued students, (Gerard, Gain, Geof and Don) and our town will lose a flourishing restaurant (Geraldine's Tummy Teasers) run by their parents. Geraldine is the main stay of the business, opening seven days a week while also working as a casual Teacher Aide. Her husband, Geofrey assists her with operations whilst also working as a genetics and animal health specialist in one of the district's large piggeries. Geofrey and Geraldine are committed P&C volunteers, regularly donating time and vouchers towards fundraising and extra curricular activities. I am one of many in the community of Bell who watch in admiration as Geofrey and Geraldine combine their parenting and volunteering with full time shift work and a seven-day a week hospitality business. Our town can't afford to lose the Custodios. We will all gain if Gain is given citizenship! A petition was only started last Thursday afternoon and already over 500 people (mostly from Bell and Western Downs) have signed and written messages of support. Please go to the link http://chng.it/JkLMdZmV and sign the online petition to support the Custodio’s appeal to grant Gain citizenship. Thankyou. Joanne Rodney
