•Since mid‐2000s, many countries have followed Japan’s example by introducing demand‐side mechanisms. Some are similar, and some go further than Japan’s GoHo policy  further than Japan s GoHo policy.

•Objective of this presentation is to review these initiatives and some of their lessons learned, and examine the reasons why they have evolved over time.
