Answering the Call Flyer/Invitation (digital/print) – Created to invites community members, JC students and employees to attend a screening of the documentary film and view a display of historical artifacts from the Pond and Maher families. Join us

J A C K S O N C O L L E G E P R E S E N T S

as we explore the friendship between Lt. Zenneth Arthur Pond and Captain

William J. Maher, with this tribute to the Pond family – whose story is our

story, the story of America.

In 2016, a group of college students pored through journals, tax

records and antique photos as they researched Michigan settlers.

Time after time they returned to an 1840 cobbler’s diary belonging

to Josiah Pond, with the penciled command, “Remember me!”

Josiah was the great-great-grandfather of Jackson Junior College

student and World War II hero, Lt. Zenneth Pond.

Students learned about the Pond family, who crossed the ocean with

Winthrop, crossed the Delaware with Washington, associated with

Abraham Lincoln, and were among the first to purchase land in

Jackson County, Michigan. They learned of his college friend, Bill Maher,

whose Irish ancestors – Edward, Thomas and Hugh Turney – worked

their way down the Great Erie Canal for a piece of Michigan soil and a

future for their children.

Like their ancestors, these young men dreamed of new frontiers.

• Carefree and confident, William Maher lived a full life and

inspired many.

• Weathered beyond his years by war, Zenneth died in his youth

while flying over the Pacific.

William Maher never forgot his friend, Zenneth Pond, and spent a lifetime

keeping the memory of his classmate alive. Now, their story lives on.

June 146 - 8 p.m. | 244 W. Michigan Avenue | Jackson, MI 49201

The afternoon will include…

• Screening of “Answering the Call: A Memorial to Jackson Junior College Student Lt. Zenneth Arthur Pond”

• Two over-sized genealogy quilts showcasing the Maher and Pond families

• Artifacts from the 1600s highlighting the history of the Pond family and early settlers

The 2018 Jackson College Jets softball team finished the season District I Runner-Up, falling to Lansing Community College in the final game of last week’s NJCAA Tournament.

This was the team’s most winning season, as the Jets broke previous season records at 33-11 overall. “This group did a tremendous job this year,” said Coach Jamie Vandenburgh. “They set a new program record for wins in a season, and we have the most players receive conference honors yet. Juneteenth Celebration continues to expand with music, resource fair and more!May 16, 2018

Jackson College will host a Juneteenth Celebration featuring Motown and jazz music on Saturday, June 16 from 2-9:30 p.m. at the CP Federal City Square, Jackson.

The Juneteenth Celebration and Resource Fair is a free community event hosted by the Jackson College Office of Multicultural Affairs, in partnership with Spring Arbor University, City of Jackson, County of Jackson, Henry Ford Allegiance Health, Consumers Energy and Baker College. Thank you to the event’s platinum sponsor, the Jackson Anchor Initiative.

Juneteenth features a great outdoor musical concert in the evening with Detroit’s own Rumpelstiltskin, a favorite nine-piece band featuring outstanding male and female vocalists that has performed throughout the Midwest. Also performing will be Jackson’s R&B, soul and rock band Airtight, funk and soul band Third Down, and DJ Scott White.

In addition to some great music, the afternoon will start with a helpful community resource fair – a job fair, health fair and education fair. Check out exhibitors all around CP Federal Square to learn more about Jackson’s helpful resources. Food and sales vendors will also be available.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of freedom for African-Americans. It commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas and originated in Galveston in 1865. The observance of Juneteenth as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African-American freedom and emphasizes achievement._________________________________

PEI graduates take new steps at Jackson College commencementMay 10, 2018

From a corrections facility to commencement ceremony, six students from Jackson College’s Prison Education Initiative recently walked across the Potter Center stage as part of the 2018 graduation.

Now released on parole, graduates are looking to the future and are thankful for the opportunities available through the PEI. Attending classes and doing homework allowed many to focus on improving themselves, fulfilling goals they may have thought out of reach and helping them to believe in themselves. Education also helped them focus their minds on something positive, a necessary distraction from the negatives going on around them in a prison environment.

“I knew I needed something to change my life. I saw information about PEI, and I thought I could change my life to be a successful person when I came back into society,” one student noted.

Taking classes while incarcerated helped ease the transition back to society after release for many of the graduates, and the opportunity to participate in commencement was wonderful. Some have found careers, while others are continuing their education and making plans to transfer to university.

The goal of the Prison Education Initiative is to reduce recidivism rates by providing college education that can lead to productive careers upon release. It helps students build new lives through education. Over the last two years, PEI has had nearly 90 students complete a degree or certificate program. Director Bobby Beauchamp said they expect 40 graduates for upcoming graduations taking place in the next month inside the corrections facilities. There are currently 90-plus incarcerated students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and many incarcerated students have been recognized on the Dean’s List.

Jackson College has been educating incarcerated students through the Michigan Department of Corrections since 2012, and has a history in the past of educating incarcerated students. The College currently has more than 600 students enrolled in the Prison Education Initiative. Today the program is offered at four state facilities, including the women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility, and one federal facility. Students may earn college credits toward a General Transfer Certificate, a Business Administration Certificate, Business Administration Associate in Applied Science, Associate of Arts, and/or an Associate in General Studies degree._________________________________
