ate, reflects on her year at Surrey.

Welcome…. … to the spring 2013 issue of the Marketing and Retail Subject Group newsletter. News items in this issue provide a snapshot of what has been an exciting and productive period for the staff, students and alumni of the group.

Since our last newsletter we have made three further appoint-ments of world-class faculty. Professor Thomas Reutterer has joined the group as a Professorial Research Fellow in Mar-keting, in parallel with his duties as Professor of Marketing and Head of the Institute for Service Marketing and Tourism at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna). Drs Evmorfia Argyriou and Jing Yang Zhong have also joined us as Lecturers in Marketing.

Our students continue to demonstrate their abilities to com-bine academic excellence with entrepreneurialism, not least in the Professional Training Year that forms part of our under-graduate degree programmes. Particu-lar mention should go to Business and Retail Management students Lucy Den-ny (Majestic Wine Warehouse) and Olivia Cameron (M&S) for their award of the Dean’s prizes for their Profes-sional Training reports . Warm con-gratulations to them both.

Finally, my thanks to all our partners in industry who have given up their time to provide our students with insights into the critical issues in marketing and retailing that they are addressing now and planning for in the near future.

Dr Jing Yang Zhong Lecturer in Marketing

Jing joined the University of Surrey in 2012 following her previous appoint-ment as a lecturer at the University of Exeter Business School. Jing completed her PhD in Marketing and Consumer Be-havior at Cass Business School in 2009. Before making the career conversion to academia, she spent almost a decade working in industry.

Jing’s research focuses on consumer’s subjective well-being and their consump-tion behaviour and quality of life. For example, what kinds of purchases and/or how to spend money on these things enhance consumer’s subjective well-being, and what’s the mechanism of the relationship? Jing’s research aims to further understand con-sumer behaviour and to provide suggestions to consumers to engage in beneficial consumption behavior to enhance their long-term well-being. Her research also provides guidance for public policymakers to establish intervention policies to encourage con-sumer behaviour that positively impacts on individuals’ well-being and the whole society’s welfare. Jing has published papers in leading journals such as Journal of Consumer Psychology, Psy-chology & Marketing and European Journal of Marketing.

Dr Evmorfia Argyriou Lecturer in Marketing

Evmorfia joined the University of Surrey following ap-

pointments as a senior consultant in IRI, and as a lec-

turer at King’s College, London and Aston Business

School, Birmingham. Evmorfia completed her PhD at

Warwick Business School funded by the Hellenic State

Scholarship Foundation (IKY), and also holds a Certifi-

cate in Teaching and Learning (Aston University).

Evmorfia's research involves diverse aspects of con-

sumer behaviour and marketing, especially the psy-

chology of consumer responses to marketing commu-

nications, and the long-term effects of marketing mix

elements on brand equity. She has published in leading

scientific journals, including Psychology & Marketing,

International Journal of Manage-

ment Reviews, European Journal

of Marketing, and International

Journal of Market Research and

is a regular presenter at interna-

tional conferences. Her research

has attracted funding from the

Chartered Institute of Marketing.

June 27th 2011 – a warm Summer’s day down at IBM North Harbour in Ports-mouth and the first day of my induction for my 12 month industrial placement. I turned up, not knowing anyone or what my job role would involve. Now, as I ap-proach my final few days as an IBMer be-fore I return to university, I look back on the incredible year I have had, and the life long friends I have made! As an industrial trainee, I was aligned to a Sales team in the General Business sector of the UK organisation as a Marketing and Events Manager for the team of client managers. In my first few months, I took the time to understand my role, meet my team and reach out to them with any questions I needed the answers to. IBM currently have 426,000 employees across the globe in 170 different countries and for the world’s number 2 brand (after Co-ca-Cola) I think it’s fair to say they have a unique organisational and ethical culture. My job role was really mixed and I was never stuck doing the same thing day in,

day out or staring at spreadsheets, like many people perceive an internship to consist of. I worked closely with the man-agement team and executives to plan sales and marketing strategies for each quarter, organised C-suite client lunches, produced in-depth revenue reports to present to my team and weekly news-letters for each of our clients, relating spe-cifically to their industry, containing events and news updates. Shadowing other IBMers was an im-portant factor to me throughout my placement year because I wanted to have a more informed decision of where I wanted to take my career after graduating next year. I contacted graduates and executives in various roles; sales, HR and project man-agement to name a few. It allowed me to rule out those areas of business that I did-n’t want to work in and gave me the op-portunity to find out more about the parts I was interested in pursing. 2011 was IBM’s centenary year and as part of the corporate responsibility pro-

gramme, the global CEO declared that he wanted every IBMer to take part in a form of giveback to celebrate our 100 year suc-cess in the industry! As an intern, giveback is an aspect of the job the company ex-pect you to get heavily involved in, with-out allowing it to affect your everyday job role. This year, I was lucky enough to be part of many giveback initiatives and one of them included leading the On Demand Community Challenge where a team of 25 IBMers work with a group of 30 school children with disabilities. We held the ODCC over 2 days and incorporated vari-ous science experiments, sports activities and arts and crafts into the project for the children taking part. They were able to work with different people from various backgrounds and experience new compe-tencies that they may not always have the opportunity to. In June 2012, 10 interns from across busi-ness lines were given the unique oppor-tunity to join the IBM Wimbledon team and spend two weeks supporting the Championships at SW19. I was lucky enough to be one of the 10 students se-lected through a vigorous process and took two weeks out of my Marketing role to join our team at the AELTC Wimbledon between June 25th and July 8th. I was also working at the AELTC Wimbledon one day a week from February up until the Cham-pionships started, leading the social media planning for the club, in partnership with IBM. This was a fantastic opportunity be-cause it allowed me to use innovation, develop my leadership skills and experi-ence close team work. One of the best jobs throughout the tournament was tweeting about the championships, play-ers and IBM’s role on the IBM @ Wimble-don Twitter account! Meeting David Beck-ham, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and the Prime Minister wasn’t so bad either! Being part of IBM’s most prestigious corporate event was an honour, I was proud to rep-resent the company and to contribute to such a successful Championship. Attending the CBI Dinner (Confederation of Business Industry) as an invitee of Ste-phen Leonard’s (IBM’s CEO for the UK) with the Foreign Secretary and 800 CEO’s and Senior Executives of UK companies such as Virgin, John Lewis and BMW was another highlight of my industrial place-ment year at IBM. I was able to network with people I would never have dreamed I’d have met and they gave me solid ca-

reer advice and showed genuine interest in what I was doing. My industrial placement year at IBM has undoubt-edly been the highlight of my university experience and I’m looking forward to returning as a graduate into Sales next year. I will take everything away with me that I have learnt this year at IBM and apply it to my final year of studies. For anyone trying to de-cide whether to take a year out in indus-try, I would totally recommend it as it not only gives you a proven advantage for your final year of university, but it gives you the opportunity to get recognised and hopefully secure a graduate position, something which is harder to get these days!

Amy Elizabeth Taylor

What IBM said….. Amy joined IBM as part of our well estab-lished Industrial Placement scheme, which each year provides over 250 plus students with a challenging and reward-ing role in the IT industry.

Amy has enjoyed a wide range of com-mercial experiences, all of which she has taken in her stride. Amy has impressed all who have worked with her. Her drive and passion for IBM has been first class and we have been delighted to have her as a member of the team. At IBM we encour-age all our placement students to partici-pate in our Giveback programme. Amy has excelled in this respect by contrib-uting to a number of established Give-back initiatives.

A significant number of our students later return to IBM on our award winning Graduate Programme. We wish her well on her return to Surrey University for the completion of her studies in her final year.’

James Miller, Senior Consultant Data and Analytics at Experian (pictured left) provided a fascinating in-sight into available data and techniques to solve complex business problems, for the benefit of our under-graduates on the “Managing Retail Locations” module. He has worked in retail, property, and market strategy for 14 years, and specialises in market planning, consumer analysis, and spatial insight for cus-tomer facing businesses. He helps private and public sector organisations across the globe understand the impact of people and places on business performance and how to spot new opportunities, enter new mar-kets, and manage risks to their operations and assets. James is an economic geographer by training, has postgraduate qualifications is Property Surveying and a Master’s in Ecological Economics. James has visit-ed the University on several previous occasions to present to students, and once again we offer our thanks for his contribution.

Using location analysis to solve complex business issues

We have been very pleased to welcome Jan England and her colleague Carolyn Hudson (Pictured here with Monica Hope from the School’s Marketing and Retail Group) from England Marketing Ltd, to present to our Masters students. If any of the students had thought that market research might be a bit of a “dry” topic they certainly didn’t have that impression by the end of this presentation. We were all given an exciting insight into the world of cauliflowers, grapes and Heineken, as well as the types of methodologies that Jan used within her consultancy group. This is definitely a session to be repeated in the future. Many thanks to Jan and Carolyn.

The world of cauliflowers, grapes and Heineken...

We were delighted to invite Jodie Read and Autumn Petersen (pictured left) from TOMS to talk to our MSc business students on how the concept of One for One was inspired by Blake Mycoskie and how TOMS suc-cessfully engage with their supporters and customers in building long term relationships. By popular de-

mand from the students, we look forward to inviting Jodie and Autumn back next year to give us an update on their latest activities.

In early December we were delighted to welcome Dr. Hans Jessen, Executive Vice President Analytics & Shopper Knowledge, Information Resources International (IRI), to give a guest lecture on , “Doing busi-ness internationally; practices & challenges” for postgraduate marketing management students.

Hans is responsible for IRI’s European Services and Global Analytics Delivery in addition to marketing enablement and service innovations throughout Europe. He joined IRI from Accenture Marketing Sci-ences where he was a partner and director of Global Operations. Hans holds a Ph.D. from Manchester University . We would like to thank Hans for his contribution.

International Business

Building long term relationships…..

We were delighted to welcome Andy Phelps to the University in October 2012 to give a guest lecture to undergraduate and postgraduate students studying Retail Buying and Merchandising. Andy graduated from our Retail Management programme in 2003. He spoke of his career to date and gave a fascinating insight to his current, senior role with Sains-bury’s. As Category Manager for beers wines and spirits, Andy has responsibility for a substantial part of the grocery retailer’s business. However, he was keen to note the part that his experience of managing opera-tions within the business had played in his own progression. In his view a strong understanding of, and ex-posure to, what happens at the sharp end of retailing is fundamental to a successful career.

Andy reflected on his own development as a leader and of the importance of people skills to his role as cat-egory manager. He recommended personal investment in building professional relationships and keeping in touch with colleagues, even when they move on. We would like to thank Andy for coming back to the Uni-versity as an industry speaker. This is not his first return visit and we are very grateful for his input.

Originally from France where I obtained a Bachelor in Business Administration, I then

decided to enroll on a Master degree abroad. I was very interested in Retail Marketing

since the several internships I did in Paris, therefore Surrey University was my first

choice. My year at Surrey was a fabulous experience not only educationally but also

personally as I met great people from various cultures. I already had skills in Retail

Marketing but this MSc degree took my education to the next level by providing me

with advanced specialist knowledge. Besides, I lived very close to the campus and I enjoyed my spare time

thanks to the excellent facilities at Surrey University and in Guildford, such as a very welcoming library, one of

the most modern sports park in Great Britain and a nice town centre with many stores. I am convinced that this

Master degree gives a boost to people like me who want to pursue a managerial career in an international

setting. Less than one month after having submitted my dissertation, I am now working in Retail at Le Bon Mar-

ché, the first department store created in the world, and I am planning to look for a job in England as I keep a

great memory of my experience there.

“My year at Surrey was ... fabulous … “

Journal of Marketing, and he serves on the review

panel or editorial board of several other journals. In 2009 he was featured in The Times as 'one of the 15 scientists whose work will shape the future'. His research has won multiple awards.

We would like to thank Nick for a most stimulating presen-tation.

I am an International student from Taiwan and I chose to study in Surrey University it has a very strong reputation in business sectors. I am very interested in retail busi-ness as my major. Retailing is a dynamic industry which includes fashion, grocery, e-tailing, trading and so on. It is also one of the biggest and fastest-growing industries in the world. It will offer me a wide range of employment options after graduation.

Surrey University also offers students pro-fessional placements and student ex-change opportunities in many countries. Therefore, I was really keen to apply for

the exchange programme in my first year of study here. I have always liked adven-ture and to experience new cultures. I can take this chance to broaden my horizon, which is really important as the world changes rapidly and it also gives me the opportunity to get to know international retail industries. Also, I have an opportuni-ty to experience a different education sys-tem and develop new skills.

I wanted to experience studying in North America and understand the difference between European countries and North America. I found out about Ryerson Uni-versity which has one of the top manage-ment schools in Canada. It is located in the heart of Toronto's business community, it combines academic with real world learn-ing. Their Ted Rogers School building is just next to one of the biggest shopping malls in Toronto. This is really important to a retail student; I have more opportuni-ty to compare the differences of retailing in London and Toronto.

a very multicultural city…

I found out Toronto is a very multicultural city, you can meet people from all over the world and people are generally very friendly. The exchange experience in Ryerson University was invaluable to me and was truly a once in a lifetime experi-ence.

While I was there, I studied great courses, met a lot of new friends from diverse backgrounds, and travelled to different cities and countries. I had two favourite modules which were ‘Franchising’ and ‘Design, Commerce and Culture’. In each course we had to complete a lot of assign-ments and presentations compared to Surrey. I never thought Franchising could

be taught as a module, which was ex-tremely interesting. The professor always encouraged us to participate in the class and not be afraid of sharing what we thought. Another favourite module was Design, Commerce and Culture. We need-ed to visit different types of retail stores each week and write a small report about their store culture, design , display and location. We were encouraged to talk to store staff or the store manager. We also had a field trip to an uptown shopping centre to do observations. This is not just academic learning but also related to prac-tical experience.

I had a wonderful time during my ex-change. I made some great friends from different countries, travelled together and shared new experiences with people from all over the world. I still keep in touch with some of them and I have visited some of them in Toronto a few times since.

In conclusion, this was a truly an eye-opening experience to immerse myself in their excellent education system and find out for myself what all the hype is about. Through this exchange programme I got to experience a new culture and educational excellence in Canada, and I also made some great friends. The experience and the memories are very special to me and they will stay with me for a very long time.

In November, we were de-lighted to welcome Isabel Cavill, Senior Analyst from Planet Retail to give a guest presentation to our under-graduate students studying International Fashion Mar-keting on our BSc Business and Retail Management pro-gramme.

Isabel provided a fascinating insight to the trends across the global clothing market. She noted that some retailers were prone to blame the weather, or the macro-economic environ-ment for their own lack-lustre performance, when closer analy-sis would reveal more fundamental shortcomings. Noting the wider complexity of the retail environment, Isabel emphasised three keys to success for the international fashion retailer. The first was getting the product right. Isabel gave two very differ-ent examples for this; Zara and Primark, who are currently both very strong players The second key to success was to have a serious internationalisation strategy, which can offer the best prospects for growth. Finally, Isabel explored e-commerce as a major catalyst for structural change in fashion retailing. We would like to thank Isabel for her presentation and her per-spective of winners and losers in global fashion retailing.

We were very pleased indeed to welcome Stephen Holt, Senior Location Planner with Sainsbury’s as a guest speaker on our BSc Business and Retail Man-agement programme. Stephen, whose role for the grocery retailer has a focus on acquisitions, has ten years of experience in this field. His presentation explained how location planning supports the work of other functions across the business.

Stephen’s presentation was a fascinating insight to the complexity of location planning decision-making, including factors from the detailed level of local knowledge through to the developing relation-ship between physical stores and on-line trad-ing. We would like to thank Stephen for his contem-porary industry perspective, which adds a valuable dimension to our programme.

Sainsbury are about to relocate their location plan-ning team base from their central London headquar-ters to Coventry. Information on graduate recruit-ment to this function can be found at http://sainsburys.jobs/signature/information/property-scheme
