Earning Potential of an Image Consultant/Soft Skills Trainer
With a huge market size of Rs. 624 Crores per year and growing exponentially the earning potential in this profession is extremely lucrative. In order to understand the earning potential of a particular individual the following factors need to be understood which form the basic core of this business.
• Starting profile of an individual and fee charged • Time devoted to the profession • Creating touch points and network
Starting Profile of an individual
Since this profession is about guiding others on becoming more successful in all walks of life, the profile of the person goes a long way to determine the target market segment and fee charged. For the purpose of understanding earning potential we have created 3 profiles and the individual needs to choose the profile that describes them the most.
Profile 1: An individual who does not have much or any professional work experience, comes from an average income group background and exposure level
Profile 2: An individual who has about 3 to 5 years of work experience in corporate in sales and marketing, PR, customer service and similar fields and comes from higher than average income group background and exposure level
Profile 3: An individual who has 5 to 15 years of experience in aviation and hospitality, media and entertainment, acting and modelling, sales and marketing, fashion related, customer service and other similar fields and comes from a high income group background and exposure level
Based on the profile an average fee is projected which ranges between Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1500 per hour of work and the starting fee increases by 25% with each passing year.
Time devoted to the profession
The second factor in determining earning potential is the time devoted to the profession. Earning in any profession is a direct factor of efforts being put. A minimum of 20 hours per week needs to be invested and a maximum of 40 hours per week is projected. Based on this input the total number of hours in a year is calculated for 48 weeks assuming that one might be on vacation for 4 weeks in a year.
Once the time devoted is determined it is advised that 60% of the time in first year needs to be invested in creating touch points through various ways. In the second and third year this reduces to 40% and 20% as by then certain things start happening on their own.
Creating Touch Points
This is the third and most crucial factor in determining success rate and earning potential. Since this profession is all about helping people achieve greater success, it is paramount to create a network of as many people as one can to gain visibility. This automatically translates in business. Touch points can be created in many ways and some of the key methods are as under.
• Conducting free workshops and one on one interventions for individuals, companies, colleges, schools, retail outlets, NGOs etc
• Inviting people to join you on social and professional media like face book, linked in, instagram, pintrest, twitter etc
• Participating in discussions across various forums on digital media • Writing blogs on varied topics of Image Management and Soft Skills as per your
interest and passion
Calculation of time taken to create a touch point: Out of all ways of creating touch points most time consuming is by doing free workshops and one on one intervention. The time taken is again profile dependent as an individual of profile 3 will be able to create a touch point faster than an individual of profile 1. In a worst case scenario if it takes 4 hours to fix a workshop in a company, club, college or a similar location in terms of visiting once or twice and then 2 hours to conduct a workshop then it makes it a total of 360 minutes and if 20 people attend the same it works out to be 18 minutes per person. In case of social media it will be much faster.
Keeping the above in mind 20, 18 and 16 minutes are projected as time taken in the first year to create a touch point for profile type 1, 2 and 3 respectively. In subsequent years this time goes down by 20% with more experience and an existing network. Touch points created also keep getting accumulated in subsequent years.
Conversion from touch points to business: Based on past experience and law of average, on a conservative note, 2% of the touch points created will convert in business over a period of time.
Average engagement time with each client: Image Consultants offer several services which in terms of time engagement can range from 2 hours to more than even 100 hours with each client. For the purposes of calculating earning potential an average engagement of 8 hours has been considered on a conservative note.
Calculating the final earning potential: Based on all the above factors, the number of clients multiplied by an average engagement of 8 hours multiplied by per hour fee gives the total potential earning.

As described earlier in this document the process of generating business in this profession is to create touch points. To help you understand more about the logic of arriving at these figures, an ICBI program advisor can take you through a ROI calculator.
Basic assumptions are as under.
• Each profile type has an average fee associated with it and this goes up by 25% in year 2 and 3
• The time devoted to create touch points out of the total time invested in the profession is 60% in the first year and then it keeps going down by 20% in year 2 and 3
• A conversion of2% is assumed from the number of touch points created • An average engagement time of 8 hours is assumed per client
Important points to be noted
1. One can create better conversion than 2% from touch points by ensuring the quality of touch points in terms of segments. Touch points created through free workshops will have better conversion ratio
2. One can increase the engagement time per client by delivering great services as it usually happens that one gets more business from the same client if the client is delighted. In this case the number of clients will reduce
3. Many clients might engage in workshops being conducted by Image Consultants 4. The price points can be higher than projected. For example many of ICBI Image
Consultants who are currently in their third year are charging up to Rs. 10,000 per hour as compared to projected Rs. 2344 in third year of profile 3
This Compilation is a representation of market size for the Image Consulting Industry (with Soft Skills** included to address the areas of grooming, body language, etiquette, behaviour) based on assumptions applied on an aggregation of primary data collected from market studies, as well as secondary data collected from resources such as government publications and reports, published material by trade associations, technical and professional groups, periodicals and newspapers and census data. The earning potential of an Image Consultant/Soft Skills Trainer is arrived at based on experience and logical assumptions of the factors of touch points, conversion from touch points, average engagement time and a fee being charged per hour of time devoted.
