National 4-H Day of Service Project April 28 is the 4-H National Day of Service. Last year, 4-H groups in the Panhandle Extension District

organized Dollars for Doughnuts to help raise funds for families affected by the Ash Hollow Fires. This year, Panhandle 4-Hers are focusing on Finders Keepers, a Panhandle-based children’s outreach

organization that specializes in providing essentials to children and families in need, which often include families involved in foster care.

Scotts Bluff County 4-H will be collecting donated items from April 23 - May 15.

Suggested Items include:

Diapers/Formula/ Other Infant Items

Socks/Undergarments (new)

Clothes/shoes/Coats (gently used)

Toys/Games (gently used)

Books/School and Art Supplies (new or gently used)

Backpacks/Bags/Tote Boxes Children who are unexpectedly removed from their homes (for safety reasons) often have to leave with a handful of belongings and the clothes on their backs. The people who volunteer to be their temporary caregivers don’t always have things on hand (clothes, bedding, toys) appropriate for the child’s age group or gender. Groups like Finders Keepers try to keep a rotating pool of supplies on hand for their foster care community members to use when faced with these situations

Tractor Safety Course - June 14-15 at the Legacy of the Plains Museum

Any youth 14 or 15 years of age who works on a farm or ranch other than his/her parents’ is required to be certified through a tractor safety course. Extension Educators and field specialists will teach the 2-day courses. For details or to register, contact the UNL Extension Office at 632-1480. Federal law prohibits youth under 16 years old from using certain equipment on a farm unless parents or legal guardians own the farm. Certification received through a course provided by Nebraska Extension grants an exemption to the law, allowing 14- and 15-year-olds to drive a tractor and work with certain mechanized equipment. Anyone older than 15 is also welcome to attend, but those under age 14 are not eligible to take the class. Extensive training on tractor and ATV safety occurs during in-class lessons with hands-on activities. Instilling an attitude of safety and a respect for agricultural equipment are primary goals of the course. The Gering class will take place June 14-15 at Legacy of the Plains Museum. To register, contact Scotts Bluff County Extension at 308-632-1480. On-site classes begin at 8 a.m. and end times will vary, depending on the number of participants. Cost of the course is $60, which includes educational materials, instruction, supplies, and lunches. Print and complete a registration found at https://kearney.unl.edu, and submit with payment to the local Extension office location at least one week before the course. Instructors will offer an ATV simulator experience to learn about safe behaviors and laws for ATVs and UTVs. Students will also complete homework assignments for the second day.

4-H Design Camp

The 4-H Design Camp is being held June 14 & 15 at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp at Halsey. Registration is limited to 20 participants and is due June 5th. The cost is $125. For more information or a registration form, contact the Extension Office. If you are enrolled in STEAM 2, have some experience sewing, and are ready for a new sewing design challenge this is the 4-H Camp for you! You will create your own original design on a yard of fabric, then specifically design fabric for a garment. You will also design a t-shirt learning about Sun Printing and develop your very own Design Portfolio while learning the science behind sewing. By the completion of the two day camp, you will have learned new skills, designed and made a garment, designed a t-shirt, created a Design Portfolio to enter in Beyond the Needle, and a Clothing Portfolio to enter in STEAM 1.
