Market dynamics – European market

Sales have been low during the whole month due to the transition towards the winter season, two short weeks at the beginning of the month and rains in Southern Europe; favourable quotations have been observed only for avocado, grapes, mango and limes. Avocado – The market remained undersupplied, with the offer from Chile dominating the scene in the hass segment and prices strongly above the average. This trend is expected to change with the beginning of season for hass from Spain (w46) and Israel (w47-48) for which there are small volumes on the market for now; Mexican volumes are higher than last year. The green segment is not benefiting of this context because of increasing volumes of ettinger from Israel and bacon/fuerte from Spain. Grapes – With few products in stock and small volumes traded (anticipated end of the season for Greece because of the rains) prices for Brazilian grapes are almost double those obtained last year. Peru is on the market for a season which promises positive, even though below last year records; the first South African grapes are also on the market but consistent volumes will arrive only in week w 52; the harvest started one week in advance also in Chile, where quality and sizes are reported to be better than last year when crops were affected by the freeze. Lime – Prices are strongly influenced by the droughts in Brazil where quotations in the local-market have skyrocketed. The market situation is quite complex because of limited volumes: prices have doubled in a couple of weeks but many consignments from Brazil have proven too yellow (low quality) and sold at very low prices. The product is hardly quoted in the importers’

price lists indicating that market prices are done upon request and fluctuates frequently; prices are expected to increase further in December and could reach 15,00 Euro/ctn by the middle of the month. Lychee – Air-freighted fruits from Madagascar, Mauritius and South Africa are on the market: the prices of the first consignments varied considerably depending on the country considered and established at 7,50 Euro/kg and below. The sea-freighted fruits have left the port on 21 November (17.000 tons) and should be on the market in mid-December (21-22 days to reach Europe). Quality is expected to be more than satisfactory even though not exceptional due to rains in July-August which affected the fruits potential. Mango – Prices have been favourable in the last weeks but quotations of atk decreased considerably in week 47 because of the low demand and the first arrivals from Ecuador and Peru; the prices for kent, keith and palmer remained interesting, over 7,00 Euro/ctn, even though the price range for these varieties has been quite huge (6,75-8,75 Euro/ctn). Melons – Prices decreased after the first arrivals and established at around last year averages, except for seeded and seedless watermelons whose quotations are considerably higher than usual. Pineapple – There are extra volumes on the market due also to some promotions cancelled. Market prices are low, hardly exceeding 7,00 Euro/ctn and the market is difficult; small sizes (9-10’) are obtaining quotations above the average, higher than those of big sizes.
