The Juicy Pear

What’s fresh in music album releases, reviewed by:

Dot Hacker - Inhibition (ORG music)

The juice: debut by experimental California rock band featuring alumni of Gnarls Barkley and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Dot Hacker is the name of the

drummer’s grandmother, not a reference to internet crime. Flavours: John Frusciante, Radiohead, Ampop.

Katie: It all started quite well - lovely soothing sounds just right for laying out in the sun in a field somewhere. But this spell didn’t last long - I enjoyed when the telephone was used as an instrumental accompaniment, but after that there was tuneless moaning and musical styles similar to other bands but nothing that this band could own. 2/5 (and one of those points was for the telephone).

Mallory: “Atmospheric, with interesting guitar sounds. Early on the band members seem to be having a disagreement about which song to play. Later they seem to be getting on much better. The songs become slower and more tuneful. My favourites are the James Bondish ‘The Wit of the Staircase’ and ‘Puncture’. I am afraid I missed the telephone sound Katie refers to. 2.5/5

Max: This is probably great if you’re with a bunch of mates having a great time and it’s on quietly in another room in someone else’s house! It is very wishy-washy with no highlights, and slightly repetitive. It also sounds like the guitar strings need tightening, there was slightly too much vibration through the speaker for me. Maybe that’s the sound the guitarist was looking for? Not for me though, my insides slightly wobbled in a dizzy type of way. 1/5

Beach House – Bloom (Sub Pop)

The juice: 4th album by guitar and keyboards duo, with more prominent guitars and vocal variety. Singer Victoria Legrand is niece of composer

Michel Legrand who wrote ‘The Windmills of Your Mind’ from The Thomas Crown Affair.Flavours: Nico, Cocteau Twins, Fleetwood Mac.

Katie: I was immediately taken with first track, ‘Myth,’ and my view didn’t change throughout the rest of the album. Not yet a fave, but I can see this growing on me this summer, particularly if I get anywhere near a beach and have my iPod. It has moments where you want to sing along and others where you can let your mind drift. 3/5

Max: More of a background album than one to actually listen to. The lead singer has a nice voice, but the songs are very similar. Several seem to build towards a crescendo, but sadly fail to deliver. The interference in the track Irene is infuriating, like the needle had stopped on one of my 7” singles. I couldn’t get to the volume quick enough. ‘The Hours’ is the best of a bland bunch. The entire album was melancholy-inducing. 1/5

Mallory: ‘Beach House’ is somehow evocative of seaside holidays… of seashells, parasols, and crisps. However, those appear to have nothing at all to do with the songs. The album itself is lovely, reminiscent of slowly eating a delicious ice cream on a gloomy day. From simple melancholy organ melodies, the songs build up into uplifting choruses. This is an album that creeps up on you like quicksand! Favourites are: ‘Myth’, ‘Wishes’, ‘The Hours’ and the damply mysterious ‘On the Sea’. Enchanting! 4.5/5

Katie - likes 80s and 90s pop. Mallory – likes pop and dance. Max – likes Radio 2.
