Market dynamics – European market, week 17

Markets are stable with relatively low prices. Market activity during Easter has been atypical because the Easter week came late in the calendar and, at the same time, local products have been available earlier than normal. The supply has been huge, sales stand probably at last year level and prices are low for most products. Promotions facilitated the removal of stocks and the preparations in view of the full development of the local-season products. Sometimes contrasting offers (same products offered at very different prices depending on distributors) have been registered in some countries. Asparagus – An advanced start of the season made prices diminishing. Local products are preferred and more expensive than imported ones; good crop for the European product with large price range and volumes +20% in comparison to last year. Avocado – Volumes of hass diminished and are still above the average, but increasing demand and promotions are making prices firmer. The season from Chile is slowly tending down with some quality issues while the supply from Peru is increasing and volumes of hass from RSA are still limited. The summer season (transition between suppliers) will be effectively completed in week 18, about one month later than in previous years. Volumes of green avocado are decreasing but the market is still oversupplied: prices are low and could tend down further. The supply will strongly increase in both segments in the coming weeks. Berries – Raspberries from Tanzania are on the market. Carambola – The market is clear: the product is missing in the price lists or offered at very high prices. Kaki – The first arrivals of sharon fruits from South Africa are expected in week 18 and will be on the market starting from week 19. Kiwi – New Zealand will produce 85 million cartons of kiwi this year - with 15 million cartons of gold kiwifruit - down on the 95 million of the 2009-2010 record, but with optimistic forecasts for the incoming season. It will be a remarkable achievement given the impact the disease Psa-V has had on orchards since 2011. Volumes of gold fruit will increase to more than 20 million trays next year as young vines will come into

production and green volumes should also further recover as growers increasingly learn to manage the disease. Ginger – Higher prices for ginger in the Chinese production areas but the prices in Europe, even if above average since September, are not as high as in previous weeks. Grapes – Smaller volumes on the market as the Chilean season is going to an end. Demand is stable, prices are under pressure particularly for green varieties, because of increasing supply from India; prices for red grapes are tending down slightly while for red globe continue over last year average. Limes – Prices have strongly improved and reached 7.00-8,00 Euro/ctn, also for small sizes. Despite a record crop in Brazil prices are very high because practically no product is entering from Mexico (low crop due to hurricane and new harvest starting in May). Demand has been good but what will happen in the coming weeks is quite unpredictable, the market may enter in a shortage period. Lychees – Air-freighted lychees from Thailand are on the market; prices stood at 20,00-22,00 Euro/ctn for the very first arrivals and decreased slightly in the following days (18,00 Euro/ctn). Mango – With the Peruvian season almost over, prices have increased and are on average for tommy atkins and above the average for other varieties, particularly for kent. Prices for air-freighted fruits are strongly above the average, particularly for kent from Peru. Quotations for air-freighted fruits from West Africa have slightly decreased after the first arrivals but remain firm; the first limited volumes of sea-freighted fruits from these origins are on the market in week 18. America (Costa Rica and Guatemala) are also on the market. The demand does not seem to be very active. Melons – Prices are satisfactory for hdw, piel de sapo and watermelons and are expected to remain strong until the beginning of the local season next month. Papaya – Small volumes on the market: the golden and solo papayas are sometimes missing in the range of products offered. The formosa papaya is largely available (both by sea and air) and the price range is huge, indicating a large variability of quality. Passion fruit – Too much product on the market and low demand; sales are not as expected and prices lowered for all origins. Pineapple – Stable market, with prices recovering in comparison to the last reported information. Prices have increased in correspondence of Easter and remained at about 8,00-9,00 Euro/ctn in the following days (12,00 Euro for top brands). The market is balanced, prices are satisfactory and arrivals are instantly sold. Pomegranate – Fruits from Peru, India and Chile are on the market, prices decreased from 5,00 Euro/kg for the first deliveries by air to 3,50-4,00 Euro/kg, still too much to guarantee

big sales; quality problems for some lots from Chile. Sea-freighted fruits are expected. Stone fruits – The season of the Southern Hemisphere fruits is almost over. Small volumes and high prices characterized the campaigns for peaches and nectarines but, on the other hand, sales of plums were higher 40% than last year. Peaches and nectarines from Morocco and Spain are on the market at very low prices. Strawberries – The campaign of the Spanish strawberries has been one of the most difficult ever, with prices 40% lower in comparison to last year; some lots from Peru are on the market. Forecasts are a little bit cloudy as there will be a lot of fruit entering the market in the coming weeks: as mentioned, the harvest of local season-products (peaches and nectarines, melons and grapes from the Mediterranean areas) began one month earlier than usual and will fully take the stage from mid-May. This will initially slow the sales of tropical fruits which might nevertheless shape-up again with the good weather and the increasing demand for fresh fruits and vegetables in general during the summer. The market might be pretty difficult especially for avocado and mango for which new origins will massively enter the market.
