1) Executive Overview

Applied statistics/analytics certificate program students enroll in select courses from

corresponding master’s programs. Contacts prefer synchronous, live, online courses to

pre-recorded webinars because of the complexity of applied statistics/analytics material. Live,

online course sessions promote instructor interaction while affording flexibility to working

professionals. However, no profiled institution has the resources to offer all courses over this

medium. For courses composed of asynchronous online webinars, instructors offer office

hours during which online students can ask questions over email, telephone, or Skype.

Learning management systems supplement modules and encourage discussion

among instructors and students. Because online courses lack face-to-face interaction

among students and instructors, contacts emphasize the importance of learning management

systems such as Blackboard or Moodle to facilitate discussion and promote student

engagement. Through these platforms, students have the ability to post and comment on

discussion topics, maintain connection with instructors, and receive grades on both written

and technical assignments.

Industry professionals with five or more years of experience in positions that require

statistical or analytical skills and who seek advancement or transition into new

functional areas enroll in applied statistics/analytics programs. Contacts at industry

organizations estimate 90 percent of their students are industry professionals. Students enroll

in certificate programs to gain the skills necessary for promotion at their current employers or

to transfer into new industries. Top industries seeking employees with statistical or analytical

skills include: professional, scientific, and technical services; educational services; and

insurance carriers and related activities.

Title certificate programs to reflect course curricula and market trends. Students

primarily seek “data analytics” certificates. Google Trends data reveals a growing search

volume for “data analytics” while “applied statistics” remains at a consistently lower search

volume. Students inquire about Colorado State University’s data analytics certificate twice

as frequently as they inquire about the University’s applied statistics certificate.

2) Program Characteristics and Curricula

Certificate Programs Share Resources with Corresponding Master’s Programs

Profiled institutions offer programs composed of semester-long courses from corresponding

master’s degrees. Certificate programs share all resources with corresponding master’s

programs, including instructors, facilities, and admissions officers. Face-to-face certificate

students enroll in the same courses as master’s students while online students attend

courses through live, online webcasts or pre-recorded webinars. At Colorado State

University, administrators equip classrooms with:

Smart boards to capture instructors’ notes;

Cameras and microphones to capture in-class lectures, questions, and discussion; and

Video operators to ensure instructors and students focus on content rather than

technological concerns.

Texas A&M University offers

several concentrations within the statistics certificate program. Although curricula focus on various aspects of statistics (detailed on pages 7-8), all students receive a general certificate in statistics upon completion.

Non-admitted students at Colorado State University must communicate interest to the

graduate admissions office and complete two summer prerequisite courses (i.e., Math Skills for Statistical Analysis and Computing Skills for Statistical Analysis) before enrolling.

Synchronous Online Delivery Improves Student Comprehension

The technicality and complexity of course content makes pre-recorded webinars or online

modules less desirable media for applied statistics/data analysis courses. Contacts at Texas

A&M University indicate that student performance improves when instructors answer

questions and lead discussions through a live virtual classroom. Although institutions do not

have resources to offer all courses over this medium, administrators require all instructors

provide support to online students through weekly office hours during which they field

students’ questions via email, phone, or over Skype. Further, all programs employ learning

management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Moodle) on which instructors post lecture notes,

outlines, and assignments and students engage in discussion with peers and instructors.

Programs Primarily Enroll Industry Professionals with at Least Five Years of Experience

Most students are mid-level statisticians or consultants who aim to acquire knowledge of a

particular topic to elevate their careers. Students pursue certificate programs rather than full

master’s degrees because they want to learn certain statistical skills or include market

statistics/analytics credentials on their resumes, but lack time to complete a full master’s

degree.

Common Attributes of Certificate Program Students

Employed: Approximately 90 percent of certificate program students are currently employed. Most work in industries that require statistical or data analysis skill, such as

professional, scientific, and technical services, educational services, and insurance carriers and related activities. The top industries employing professionals with certificates in statistics or data analytics appear below.

Transitional: Many certificate program students aim to acquire skills to transition into a new functional area at their current employer or into a new industry altogether.

Educated: All students must possess bachelor’s degrees to enroll in certificate

programs. Students at Pennsylvania State University and Texas A&M University

must also have successfully completed relevant coursework in math or statistics.

Experienced: Most students enroll with at least five years of experience as statisticians or mid-level consultants. Contacts at Colorado State University indicate that

approximately 45 percent of their students are between 25 and 34 years old and 34 percent are between 35 and 44 years old.

Some Students Receive Tuition Reimbursement from their Employers Following Completion

At Colorado State University, contacts indicate that many students who receive

reimbursement do not complete the full certificate curriculum. Instead, these students enroll

in particular classes (e.g., statistical methods, regression methods) to gain necessary skills

for promotion.

Programs Provide Students with Skills to Advance Their Careers or Transition into New Functional Areas or New Industries

Programs at Colorado State University and Pennsylvania State University have required

core courses and supplemental elective courses. Alternatively, Texas A&M University offers

certificates with various emphases, such as:

General (i.e., basic statistical methods),

Biostatistics,

Biometrics,

Data mining, and

Applied statistics (i.e., statistics application in any industry, no theoretical subject matter).

Title Programs to Reflect Top Job Postings and Course Curricula

Since its inception in 2007, the data analysis certificate at Colorado State University has

been approximately twice as popular as the applied statistics certificate. The data analysis

certificate confers more targeted business skills including how to collect, analyze, and

interpret data while the applied statistics certificate includes more in-depth coursework on the

science behind collection, organization, and statistical analysis of data. Contacts hypothesize

that because employers seek transferrable data analysis skills, students more often pursue

data analysis certificates.

Google Trends search data also reveals a growing interest in data analytics. Since 2010,

Google searches in the United States for “data analytics” demonstrate an increasing

magnitude of volume while “applied statistics” searches show a slight decline. Consequently,

the Forum suggests titling any new programs to reflect prospective students’ interest in data

analytics and attract those prospective students who many search for programs through

Google.

Amazon.com demonstrates the third highest demand and the second highest growth in

demand; consequently, Amazon.com should be of particular interest to directors of new

certificate programs. Further, because Amazon.com offers over 1,600 more jobs in the

Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA MSA than any other location, administrators at Oregon State

University should consider pursuing a relationship with this employer.

3) Research Methodology

Leadership at a member institution approached the Forum with the following questions:

What are the top job titles for individuals with a certificate in applied science/analytics?

What skills and competencies do employers seek in job candidates?

What employers maintain the most job openings?

Which metropolitan areas demonstrate the highest demand for candidates with a certificate

in applied statistics/analytics?

What are the major attributes of certificate programs in applied statistics/analytics?

What is the typical student of certificate programs in applied statistics/analytics, with the

respect to age, gender, industry and profession, and place in career?

What resources do programs require, with respect to faculty, staff, facilities, and other

resources?

What informed contacts’ decisions to include “statistics” or “analytics” in program titles?

What trends have contacts witnessed in graduate certificate conferrals? How do students

perceive the benefit of a certificate in relation to the benefit of a master’s degree?

Do certificate program directors compete with master’s programs for students, or do

prospective student audiences differ between certificate and master’s programs?

What trends have contacts witnessed in application, admission, and matriculation rates

over time? To what factors do contacts attribute these shifts?

Do students seek “statistics” or “analytics” programs more frequently?

What are common student outcomes following graduation from programs (e.g., salary,

career advancement)? In what industries do students find employment?

Definition of Terms

The total number of “unspecified” job postings included in a data sample is indicated below all

charts and graphs in this report. Job postings are considered “unspecified” for a skill,

industry, employer, geography, certification, education requirement, or major when the job

posting did not advertise for one of these particular job characteristics and therefore should

be subtracted from the total number (n value) of job postings analyzed in the query. Capital

cities may be overrepresented in instances where job postings do not specify a location

within a state.

The Forum interviewed online certificate program directors at Pennsylvania State

University, Texas A&M University, and Colorado State University.
