Have you noticeda series ofposters around
the island, such as theone of a bride wearingher wedding gown and abright orange lifejacket? These posters are part ofa campaign mounted bythe SNSM (FrenchNational Society ForRescue At Sea) toencourage people towear lifejackets when-ever out on the water. The clever visuals showpeople at key momentsin their lives… a wed-ding, the birth of achild…. and they arewearing lifejackets.“Without it, he/shewouldn’t be here,” saysthe slogan, referring tothe lifejacket. TheSNSM launched thiscampaign after notingthat in good weather lessthan one person out oftwo wears a lifejacketwhen in a boat. In badweather, over 30% ofthe people surveyed
wear a life-jacket as amatter ofhabit. 48%noted thatthe lifejack-ets are notcomfortable,37% don’tsee theneed, orthey didn’tlike theweight, thelook, thecost, etc.“The prob-lem is thatin case of an emergency, the time it takes to puton a lifejacket, it can betoo late,” observesIngénu Magras, head ofthe SNSM in SaintBarthélemy. “Especiallyif the lifejackets are allstowed away. If I amunconscious and fallinto the water wearing alife jacket, I have achance of survival. Butwithout it, I would sinkstraight away,” Magras
points out. The SNSMvolunteer crew wears their orange lifejacketsevery time they arecalled out, regardless ofthe weather. “Especiallysince today’s inflatablelifejackets are not ascumbersome,” addsMagras. According tothe SNSM, almost 400people perish each yearin the sea. If this numberremains fairly stable, itmasks a decrease in the
number of accidents thatconcern professionals that has been compen-sated by an alarmingincrease in accidentsrelated to swimming andpleasure boating. Asthere are more and morepeople heading out tosea, the SNSM recom-mends wearing a life-jacket at all times inorder to limit the num-ber of tragic incidents.

NY-based artist GrahamGuerra, who was anartist-in-residence at StBarth’s Eden Rock hotelin 2010, has returnedthis summer with Pairi-daeza, his second soloshow at the Eden RockGallery, which runsthrough August 1. Pairi-daeza is the Avestan (oldPersian) word for awalled garden and Guer-ra suggests that the land-scape of St Barth with itsazure blue water, whitebeaches, and palm treesforms the modern-dayarchetypal collectiveunconscious version ofparadise.
“For my second soloshow at Eden RockGallery, Pairidaeza, I’vecreated a series of worksinspired by the remark-
able natural beauty ofthis island,” says Guerra.“Each piece is based onvintage St. Barth’s post-cards (from the 60s and70s) from the collectionof another former EdenRock artist-in-residence,Jason Bereswill. Theseperiod images personifya more idyllic anduncorrupted version ofthe island than the onesyou’ll find propagated inour contemporaryc e l e b r i t y - o b s e s s e dmedia.” Guerra is avail-able for private art class-es while on the island.
