Marist Catholic School Herne Bay News
Issue 1, Term 4, 24TH October 2018
Our Charism
As Marists, we think, judge, feel and act in the way of Mary
Our Mission
Quality learning opportunities, with Jesus Christ as our guide
Dear Families, A warm welcome back to Term 4. I would like to extend a ‘Welcome to Marist’ to new families and students.
We know that your time at Marist will be rewarding and enjoyable.
A busy start to the term 4 with so much happening.
On Tuesday 16th October our Year 6s and Mrs Adrienne Faulkner and I went to Our Lady Star of The Sea School to formally hand over Mrs Louise Campbell to her new school. The students of Mrs Campbell’s new school were very excited to have her join them as their new principal. The Chairman of their Board of Trustees presented us with a gift, a beautifully crafted wooden cross that will hang in our foyer. Our students sang beautifully and enjoyed making some new friends. We all wish Mrs Campbell the very best for the future and will miss her.
Oral Language Festival Finals – Inner City Schools Cluster Last Thursday, Matisse van der Veer (Rap), Sophia Jongco (Spoken Word Poetry), Billy Simpkins (10sq Flash Talk) and Lily-Grace Barrington (Prepared Speech) represented Marist at the Oral Language Festival Finals.
Our students represented us so well in their categories and the competition was very strong.
A big congratulations goes to Billy Simpkin for winning 1st place in the 10sq Flash Talk and to Sophia Jongco winning 2nd place for her Spoken Word Poetry.

Congratulations to Luca Joint Rotondo who won 2 Gold medals, 2 silver medals and 1 Bronze medal at the New Zealand Nationals Surf life saving Competition. Congratulations to Kate Danaher who came second at both her events at the Halbergs.Well done Luca and Kate! So proud of both of you! Staffing news: At the end of this year we will sadly be farewelling Mrs Adrienne Faulkner. Adrienne has been at Marist for 4 years as Senior school team leader and sports co ordinator. She has successfully implemented great learning programmes and many sports iniatives for our students at Marist. Adrienne has decided to undertake further study and we wish her the best for her future endeavours. The job vacancy has been advertised and soon interviews will be held to find a teacher to fill this position. I will keep you updated about this position. Uniform: As we are in Term 4 and summer is round the corner, a reminder that students need to be wearing their summer uniform, sandals and their Marist sun hat. Warm regards and abundant blessings, Sharon Menezes Acting Principal Events at the end of last term: Visit to Whaiora marae We visited Whaiora marae and experienced being part of a powhiri. The students enjoyed activities organised by the teachers and a lovely lunch thanks to our Marist PTA. Thank you to Rangi Fiu and Deyne Te Marino supporting us with the kaikaranga.
Senior School Production: The Case of the Missing School:
What a fabulous, entertaining and an amazing production that was! The students performed brilliantly and entertained parents and the community for 2 evenings. Special thanks to Adrienne Faulkner, Lina Rahimi and Katherine Bartlett for working tirelessly and training our students for the production. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to help with the props, costumes and more. We deeply appreciate your support.

Louise’s Farewell: It is always said to say goodbye and at the end of last term we farewelled Mrs Louise Campbell. In the 3 and a half years that Louise was at Marist she led the school and worked hard to ensure Marist went from strength to strength and is well set up for the future and our continued school growth.
Kia ora We are pleased to update you on the Principal recruitment process. Applications closed last week and we are delighted with both the number and calibre of candidates. This is a reflection of the esteem with which Marist is held in the Auckland education community. This week we meet as a board, guided by Kerry Mitchell from The Education Group and Phil Mahoney from the Catholic Schools Office, to shortlist the candidates ready for the interview process. We will continue to keep you updated on our progress. Thank you for your continued support of Sharon and the team during this time. We are hugely grateful for their commitment, professionalism and hard work.
Prayer for the Beginning of Term 4
God of wisdom and might, You have chosen this time for a new beginning.
This new beginning can help us to begin afresh and try harder.
This new beginning can help us to do new things and try out new skills.
This new beginning can help us work together for the good of everyone.
Help us all make the most of this new beginning.
Amen.
God bless you all during our last school term for 2018! Katherine Bartlett, DRS.

Religious Education: Communion of Saints Strand
We are currently learning about the Communion of Saints -Te Kotahitanga O Te Hunga Tapu.
The following is an outline of your child’s learning:
At Level 1 (Years 1 & 2) children will learn about:
1) The holiness of Mary because she is close to God.
2) What makes people holy and how these qualities are seen in the lives of the Saints.
3) The saintliness of ordinary people can inspire others and lead them to God.
4) Celebrating Saints’ lives including appropriate prayers.
At Level 2 (Years 3 & 4) children will learn about:
1) Sad times that are part of people’s lives, ways to cope with them and how faith in
God gives people strength in sad times.
2) Death and what happens to life after death in the light of Christian hope.
3) The meaning of Te Wa the journey of life from a Christian perspective.
4) The relationship between choices people make every day and life after death
At Level 3 (Years 5 & 6) children will learn about:
1) The meaning of the Communion of Saints
2) Saints and Inspiring People, who through their holiness and the witness of their lives
are witnesses of the Holy Spirit – Te Wairua Tapu and role models for people today.
3) Scripture stories of Mary’s Faith journey.
4) Mary is a model for living and discipleship.
With the teaching of these learning objectives, we would like your children to gain the ‘big
picture’ understanding that the Communion of Saints inspires and gives hope. To guide your
children, you could start talking at home about Saints and other inspiring people and their
qualities.
