LOVE OF WORK FAMILY SPIRIT IN THE WAY OF MARY SIMPLICITY PRESENCE A Message from the Primary School Principal, Mr Tony Williams How to Teach Children to be Assertive Some of the most difficult moments in my teaching career have come about when I was faced with a Student who has tears in his (her) eyes. Picture the scenario. He had a really hard week. He struggles with anxiety and inattention in the classroom, and that makes learning difficult on a good week. That wasn’t what brought his tears, though. He can cope with the mixed emotions that go hand-in-hand with learning problems. What made an average week terrible for this Student was peer conflict. “If I do what they say, they let me play with them. If I don’t because I don’t want to get in trouble, they walk away and tell me not to follow.” Caught between his morals he learnt from birth and through his schooling and his desire to remain part of a peer group - he freezes. To stand up to them was to risk losing them (for the day, anyway) but to follow the herd was to risk getting in trouble. He couldn’t make a decision. In the end, they left him standing alone, too anxious to make a move. This particular child is one of the quiet ones. He’s introverted and tends to stick to a small peer group of trusted friends, and he almost never leads the group. He prefers to avoid conflict as much as possible and has difficulty standing up to his friends. He’s not alone. Many Students struggle to assert their thoughts and feelings, even when they know that speaking up is the right thing to do. Assertiveness is a way to communicate feelings, thoughts, opinions and beliefs in a respectful, clear and honest manner. Although it doesn’t come naturally to all, assertiveness is a skill that can (and should) be taught to children this will enable them to stand up for themselves during testing times and to build resilience. Assertive communication is direct but not offensive. In fact, part of being assertive is respecting others’ feelings and opinions, being able to take criticism in a constructive way, and being willing to negotiate when having a disagreement. Therefore, assertive children are more likely to be able to: identify their own feelings; speak up for themselves and others; avoid and respond to bullying; MARIST BROTHERS LINMEYER NEWSLETTER FRIDAY, 1 st June 2018

disagree respectfully;

negotiate with others;

say “no” without feeling guilty;

build up stronger relationships;

build confidence and self-esteem; and,

feel in control. Teaching assertiveness early in life is very valuable as, generally speaking, assertive children grow up to be assertive teens and adults. Here are some ideas of how you can teach your children to be assertive: 1) Model assertive behaviour when interacting with family members, acquaintances, and others. 2) At times, you will need to teach your child how to be assertive explicitly. If your child is feeling left out at break times, teach him/her how to manage this situation. For example, you can coach him/her on how to join in activities or games that he/she enjoys playing. 3) You can role-play different scenarios so your child has an opportunity to practise being assertive. 4) Other traits to teach include: confident posture (body upright, shoulders relaxed, relaxed facial expression, and good eye-contact), and listening without interrupting. As with any other skill, learning to be assertive takes time and practice, so be consistent and persist, it will soon pay off! PRAYER FOR THE WEEK May the Lord Jesus put his hands on our eyes, for then we

too shall begin to look, not at what is seen, but what is not

seen. May he open the eyes that are concerned not with the present but with what is yet to come. May he unseal the

heart’s vision, that we may gaze on God in the spirit, through the same Lord Jesus Christ, whose glory and power will

endure throughout the unending succession of ages. (Prayer

of Origen 185- 254 AD)

CRICKET TERM 1 Our season so far has been a relatively successful season. The highlight of the season was our victory at the St Benedict’s Cricket festival. This was an especially good achievement as

most of our team is made up of Grade 9 boys and we came up against senior teams

consisting of Grade 11 and Grade 12 boys.

Our results for the festival were as follows:

Marist Brothers Linmeyer beat CBC Pretoria by

11 Wickets.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer lost to St. David’s by

32 Runs.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer beat Sacred Heart by

22 Runs.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer beat St.

Benedict’s by 7 Wickets.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer beat Veritas by 10

Wickets.

We were unfortunately less successful in our league matches, losing 3 of the 4 matches that

we played. Special mention has to go to our captain Joshua Jose who made 134 runs from 52

balls against St. Martin’s and 69 not out against King David. Joshua finished the season with a

batting average of 79.75.

Our results for the league are as follows:

Marist Brothers Linmeyer lost by 9 wickets to

King David’s.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer lost by 193 runs to

Marias Viljoen.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer U14 lost by 44 runs

to Marais Viljoen U14.

Marist Brothers Linmeyer beat St. Martin’s by

213 runs.

Well done on a good season boys!
