THE MUZAK GLOBALSHOP CAMPAIGN 2008

Page 4: Marissa Ferrari Portfolio

GlobalShop, the world’s largest annual retail design and tech-

nology event, provides one of the best opportunities for Muzak

to make our presence known in the retail market place. It’s

also the ideal place to debut new products and services for this

industry, like digital signage. Globalshop is the place for Muzak

to create a unique, interactive and memorable booth experi-

ence that engages audiences and defies expectations with one

of our largest market segments.

This year, Globalshop took place March 18-20 in Chicago at

McCormick Place. The theme of our award-winning, 1,200-

square-foot booth was Expression. Each individual has a unique

way of expressing themselves, and so does a brand. What we

do is help brands express themselves in a way that speaks to

customers on an individual and personal level – by making the

customer experience a human experience.

Photographs of people expressing angst, desire, elation and

pride were displayed throughout the booth on 14 LCD screens.

Music corresponding to the emotions brought the images to

life, demonstrating the power of music to illustrate brand ex-

pression. We also invited booth guests to have their photos tak-

en and displayed on the LCD screens throughout the space,

making the exhibit a truly interactive experience.

Support & Redefine Music Education 800 331.3340

Music inspires passion and fuels dreams. Any child who picks up an instrument or a micro-phone longs to share their creativity with the world. Music education helps young people channel that desire for creative expression into dedication and commitment. And the skills they learn along the way – discipline, critical thinking, self-esteem, teamwork – help young musicians find success throughout their studies and in any career path they choose.

Page 22: Marissa Ferrari Portfolio

Who We AreThe Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation was est-ablished to develop new ways to support and redefine music education. Since 1998, we have made a difference in the lives of thousands of young people – by increasing access to unique music education opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

“Students in high-quality music programs scorehigher on standardized tests compared to studentsin schools with deficient music education programs.” - C. Johnson and J. Memott, University of Kansas

Page 23: Marissa Ferrari Portfolio

What We DoOur initiatives focus on two critical areas: • Maintain traditional classroom-based programs and access to instruments • Provide one-of-a-kind opportunities for young musicians to participate in and explore career paths within the music industry

Making A DifferenceWe have invested nearly $2 million in unique music education opportunities.• More than $1 million invested to restore music education programs• More than 75 public school music programs supported• Thousands of students benefitted from new music departments, instrument donations and supplemental materials• More than 200 students participated in Noise! and Battle of the Bands • Students from more than 25 states and from as far away as Jamaica and Kosovo have attended Noise!

Music Matters™ Grant ProgramOver the last several decades, music education programs in public schools have been jeopar-dized or eliminated by frequent budget cuts. The Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation helps fundmusic departments and provides instruments and supplemental materials to restore musiceducation programs. To date, we have supportedmore than 75 schools around the country.

“Schools that have music programs have sign-ificantly higher graduation rates than do thosewithout programs – 90.2% as compared to 72.9%.” - National Association for Music Education

Battle Of The BandsBattle of the Bands gives high school musicians a rare chance to perfect their performance skills outside a band or orchestra setting. Student bands face off to win the support of their local community as well as a prize package designed to help kick-start their careers in the recordingindustry. Awards include store credit toward equipment, studio time and a song featuredon a hit Muzak program. The event is held inseveral major cities each year.

Noise! Our signature program, Noise! takes music education to the next level by giving high school students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain first-hand experience inside the music industry – and develop professional skills that will benefit them in any profession. Participants spend two weeks in a major music industry hub such as Los Angeles or Nashville, where they are im-mersed in every aspect of the business and learn directly from professionals about essential busi-ness skills and dozens of music-related careers.

Page 26: Marissa Ferrari Portfolio

How To Get Involved The Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation connects donors, sponsors and volunteers with all that is possible when we believe in the power of music education. Although we greatly appreciate your contribution, young musicians are the real bene-factors of your support. The students we bring together will accomplish their goals with more passion and confidence because of your commit-ment. We will work closely with you to identify the issues that matter most, and help guide your charitable giving decisions.

• Make a one-time gift or a recurring pledge• Sponsor an event such as Battle of the Bands• Sponsor a student to attend Noise!• Create a contribution to meet your goals

Quentin Bethea (2005) After participating in Noise!, Quentin Bethea received a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. He was also selected two years in a row to be one of 24 students nationwide to participate in the Gibson/ Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble, where he performed over eight days in Los Angeles with jazz greats such as Barry Harris, Hank Jones, Ivan Neville and more. He also attended the 48th Annual Grammy’s, performed live at a Grammy after-party and is set to record his first album.

Whitney Bishop (2003) Whitney utilized the experience she gained at Noise! while still in high school, working as a promotional representative for Aware Records in Chicago. She attended college at Full Sail, the destination for students hoping to break into the recording industry. After graduation, she landed a coveted position working in tour marketing at William Morris with artists such as Rihanna and Common. Today, Whitney is working on na-tional tours for Carrie Underwood, Bon Jovi and more at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles.

The following statements are from students, families and volunteers who have benefitted from and contributedto the Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation. “All forms of music education help to instill discipline, commitment and cooperation in a student’s character. The process of learning to play an instrument forces students to set long- term goals for themselves, and teaches them that many things worth doing take time to accom-plish. These are traits that have a positive effect on every aspect of their lives.” Matt McKagan (Music Educator and Mr. Holland’s Opus Award Winner)

“The Battle of the Bands has been the best music educational opportunity a young musician can have. Not only did my son learn about the music industry, his involvement helped raise money so that others could experience the same benefits. Thank you for this unbelievable gift!” Dena (Parent of Desmond, Battle of the Bands 2006)

“Thank you so much for helping kids like me open up our lives to an endless pool of opportunities.” Tiara (Noise! 2004)

“The message you send, to follow your dreams, will last a lifetime.” Patricia (Parent of Katie, Noise! 2005)

“I managed to learn invaluable lessons, not only about the music industry but about life itself.” Mikyo (Noise! 2005)

“Noise! is essential for anyone who dreams of a career in music. This is more than just a summer camp. You won’t get these kinds of opportunities anywhere else. The things you learn and the connections you make are priceless.” Noah (Noise! 2006)

“It is quite obvious my daughter has had a life-altering experience. I was astounded by how much she had changed. I saw a very centered, empowered young lady. Seeing her with such poise and confidence was a joy.” Chris (Parent of Megan, Noise! 2005)

Tell us about your background.

Adrienne Weiss Corporation is a branding

think-tank. We work with some of the biggest

brands, like Disney®, Dunkin’ Donuts® and

Target®. All with the goal of creating a brand

voice for businesses.

How does that work?

For us, there are three philosophical ideas.

One is that every brand is a story, specifically

a customer-centered story – what’s in it

for them. In this story-telling that we do,

we create a filter for the brand. The filter

determines what the store looks like, what

the store sounds like. Every expression of

the emotional story that is the brand.

The second idea is that a brand is a club

people want to be a member of. You’re

connecting with people, to make them feel

like they want to belong. The third idea is

your business is like a country, with its own

language, ceremony and customs. A great

example is the Four Seasons®. In their country,

they don’t hand you a key across a desk,

they come around the desk to give it to you.

What are some of the trends, especially

sensory branding trends, you’ve

observed within the hospitality industry?

The fact that you’re using the phrase “sensory

branding” is the answer. This is a time when

brands need to resonate across all the senses.

An early example is Westin® and their

Heavenly Bed®. And now many hotel brands

have a signature scent, as well as music as

part of a guest stay with iPod® stations and

compilation CDs. It’s tactile and experiential.

Where do some of these

trends originate?

I call it the spa influence. Sights, sounds and

physical elements are more natural to create

a more peaceful environment for the guest.

A very soothing shower, natural sounds to fall

asleep to, a mini-bar with more healthy food.

A kinder, gentler hotel.

Can you tie this to a more

comprehensive lifestyle trend?

It isn’t a trend unless it comes from the

collective consciousness of the culture. This

trend comes from what people are already

doing, reading and buying, from music and

politics. It’s a Zen moment. A 5,000 year-old

idea has finally had its time. Another influence

is the idea of “everyday luxury”. That life is

precious and you’re worth it. A return to an

earlier era of martinis, dining and entertaining.

Overall, hotels have an opportunity to create

an experience in a way that a retail store has

to work harder to do. And the best brands

are the ones that are taking that seriously.

There’s a buzz about sensory branding. But what is it? And how do hotels activate the five senses as part of the guest experience?

Recently, Muzak had a chance to talk with Adrienne Weiss, CEO of the self-titled design, marketing and product development think-tank based in Chicago. Weiss is an expert in branding, and is on the forefront of trends in sensory branding. We asked Weiss to share her expertise in trends specific to the hospitality industry.

The Omni Hotels Experience. The soundtrack of most 4-Diamond luxury hotels tends to

be quiet tinkles of classical music in the lobby, but Omni

Hotels is redefining the sensible luxury experience with the

help of Muzak. For decades, Muzak has created experiences

for businesses worldwide through a series of Audio Imaging

services, and the design for Omni Hotels was multi-faceted.

In 1987, Chip Conley opened Phoenix Hotel in the edgy Tenderloin

district of San Francisco. He began with a seemingly simple idea: a

hotel should appeal to a guest’s personality. In fact, the hotel’s entire

design concept should be built around the psychographic profile of

the intended guest. As a symbol of this guest personality, a hotel

should consider what magazine the guest is most likely to read –

and imagine the décor, unique services and even types of employees

this magazine’s readers would prefer.

Today, Conley is CEO of Joie de Vivre Hotels, which operates a creative

collection of properties throughout California. Each is carefully designed

to express its individual personality with unique visual style, high design

principles, one-of-a-kind amenities and personalized service. Joie de

Vivre has built its success on the belief that every hotel has an oppor-

tunity to create an emotional connection with a guest. And that guests

who feel connected begin to establish loyalty to the brand.

Joie de Vivre believes this connection is strongest when every part of the

hotel experience resonates with a guest’s psychographic profile. Back to

the magazine idea – just as Martha Stewart Living targets every issue to

a very clearly-defined reader, Joie de Vivre creates the concept for each

of its properties with a specific guest in mind. And that concept becomes

a “style infrastructure” that guides the choice of every detail, from

the color and texture of window treatments to restaurant hours and

menu items.

This attention to detail isn’t limited to curtains and cocktails. Joie de

Vivre has built its brand upon the importance of appealing to all five

senses at every opportunity. And nowhere is that more apparent than

at Hotel Vitale. Located on the San Francisco bay, Hotel Vitale features

open, light-filled spaces and stunning water views.

In addition to water and light, elements like warm wood, sprigs of fresh

lavender and natural stones complete Hotel Vitale’s “Luxury, Naturally”

concept. “From the moment guests enter our lobby, they feel calm and

cared for,” said Greg Horner, corporate director of marketing for Joie

de Vivre. “Vitale creates the soothing sensory experience of a day spa

in every part of the hotel.”

Music and scent play a critical role. “Music and scent set the stage

for any experience,” said Horner. “With so many great choices from

Muzak, we’re able to create a serene oasis in our lobby, and a more

stimulating and lively experience in our lounge – while ensuring that

each is consistent with the casual luxury Hotel Vitale is known for.”

People travel for lots of reasons,

but probably not to find the same

old thing. Omni Hotels knows

guests want more from a trip,

whether it’s an invigorating taste

of a new culture or an engaging

and productive meeting. In fact,

Omni Hotels was recently ranked

highest in guest satisfaction by

J.D. Power and Associates – and

credits their focus on sensory

exploration and indulgence as the

driving force behind this success.

Omni Hotels continues to engage

the senses at every opportunity. As

weary travelers enter their rooms,

they encounter the Omni Sensa-

tion Bar, a delightful twist on the

standard mini-bar. Each Sensa-

tion Bar offers unique indulgences

for all of the senses, including a

mini Zen garden, mojito-flavored

jelly beans and a relaxing CD to

promote restful sleep. Many Sen-

sation Bars also include locally

made products that represent the

destination’s culture – like voodoo

love dolls in New Orleans

and Orange Blossom Pilsner

in Jacksonville, Florida.

In the morning, Omni guests

TODAY. Omni has partnered

Miles of white sand and warm Gulf of Mexico

waters surround the Marco Island Marriott re-

sort. This stunning setting alone is a compelling

appeal to the senses. Add a Balinese-style luxury

spa, a golf course that doubles as a certified

sanctuary for shoreline wildlife, parasailing and

Pilates – and your senses have taken charge and

are booking your coconut sugar body scrub.

The resort offers every amenity its guests expect,

and sensational new experiences to discover.

And guests need help finding the right space

and mood among six restaurants, two bars,

four shops, two pools and many activity areas.

Consider the diversity of the guests – young

families, newlyweds on honeymoon, empty-nest-

ers on permanent vacation – and helping guests

quickly identify each experience becomes even

more important.

Rick Medwedeff, general manager for Marco

Island Marriott, knew a solution could be found

in music. “We offer so many experiences for our

guests; there’s truly something for everyone,”

said Medwedeff. “But each one appeals to dif-

ferent lifestyles, and we need music to express

the unique character of each environment.

That’s why we expanded our relationship

with Muzak.”

Muzak was originally engaged to provide music

and sound for Quinn’s Pool, part of the resort’s

recent $187 million renovation. To celebrate this

whimsical “fantasy pool”, Muzak designed and

installed a custom sound system including Bose®

speakers. Medwedeff saw that Muzak’s Tropical

Breezes program, featuring laid-back Caribbean

music, was a perfect complement to carefree

days of sun and fun by the pool – and asked

Muzak to create a distinct music identity for every

public space from the entryway to the beach.

Encompass LE, Muzak’s satellite delivery

technology, was selected to provide instant

access and central control of every area

of the property. “We wanted to control the

experience in each guest area,” said

Medwedeff. “Now, if we’re transitioning

between a corporate meeting and a wedding

reception in one of our function areas, we

can change the music instantly online.”

You have a story that is all your own.

There are an endless number of brand voices in the marketplace. Yours is unique. Like a fingerprint, a snowflake, your DNA. Your brand identity is individual, personal – intricate and amazing. It’s what makes you different – better – than anyone else.

Your brand voice matters more than ever before.

Page 36: Marissa Ferrari Portfolio

What if your story never had to end?

You understand the importance of the customer experience. You think about how your customers might feel when they stop by. What they’re looking for from life, and how you can help make their day a little better. What would make their experience great, and make them want to come back. What if that carefully designed customer experience could continue long after they leave? What if it began before they ever came in?

Now, the experience doesn’t have to end.

The sun was setting over downtown Austin, and Muzak’s open air party was

drawing to a close. The few hundred fans in attendance stood riveted, as singer

and pianist Rachel Fuller murmured the last few bars of a sweet, pensive tune.

As applause rang out, Fuller smiled and looked offstage where a small group

was gathered. With a nod, she invited a living music legend to join her set. A

hush fell over the crowd, punctuated only by the flicker of camera phones, as

Pete Townshend strode onstage and picked up a guitar – stunning and delighting

the surprised audience as he accompanied Fuller on her last song.

What does an evening with Pete Townshend have to do with Muzak?

More than you might think.

“Muzak is a forward-thinking

company that’s helping artists

like me do what we love. It’s an

amazing outlet for my music.”

– Andy Zipf, Independent Artist

Austin, Texas is known as the “live music

capital of the world”. And every March, that

music scene swells to include more than

1,400 artists from six continents who perform

at the South by Southwest Music Conference

and Festival, or SXSW. The festival is for the

true music fan, clamoring to experience as

much cutting-edge music as can fit into 144

hours (sleep can wait when rock gods are

performing at 3am). And SXSW is for the

artist and the industry – the place where

absolutely every sector of the music business

is represented, and each one hopes to scoop

the next artist about to make it big.

And Muzak took center stage. More than

15 representatives fanned out to experience

every artist showcase, attend every conference

panel and license every artist, record label

and publisher. “Label owners know the Muzak

story and the exposure opportunities we can

provide for their artists, and they were literally

loading our arms with stacks of CDs to

check out,” said Jason McCormick, industry

relations manager for Muzak.

The vast majority of recorded music

has rights associated with it – the

rights of an artist, record label and/

or song publisher.

In order for you to legally play most music

in your business, royalties are due, often

to the major publishers ASCAP, BMI and

SESAC. If they aren’t covered, your

business could be hit with a major fine –

as much as $250,000! That’s a possibility

whether you’re using CDs, consumer

satellite radio or an mp3 playlist.

SXSW attendees less familiar

with Muzak had incredible

opportunities to experience

what we offer the music business,

and create for our clients. The

first was a classic artist showcase,

where Rachel Fuller and Pete

Townshend performed. On a

sunny afternoon, performers

filed in from the clogged streets,

to a tent set up in the hub of

people, bands and events taking

over Austin’s downtown. They

were invited by headliner Fuller,

who also hosts “In the Attic”, a

Webcast and live show featuring

music and guests – including

partner Townshend.

Minutes after the gates opened,

fans filled the tent to capacity.

One by one, performers Sarah

Marince, Andy Zipf, Scott McCurry

and The Alternate Routes took the

stage. All breaking artists, they

worked the stage like pros, happy

to see fans and make some new

ones. “Sometimes I have to fight

ten times as hard, because I’m

an independent artist,” said

Andy Zipf. “Muzak is a forward-

thinking company that’s helping

artists like me do what we

love. It’s an amazing outlet for

my music.”

THE NEXT BIG THING

WHY DOES LICENSING MATTER?

Muzak has always been known for creating music for businesses, but is also a major part of the music industry. Muzak travels the world, meeting with record labels promoting the biggest stars as well as independent artists looking for their first big break. As a result, our clients have access to the best music from every genre and every corner of the globe.

Rollicking outdoor parties are a SXSW staple,

and Muzak was thrilled to showcase a small

group of the independent artists included in

our catalog. But another type of performance

was in the works – a suggestion of Muzak’s

unique ability to transform a basic storefront

into an experience for all the senses.

The stage was set in an art gallery, a minimal-

ist space with white walls, ceilings and floors.

In just a few hours Muzak customized an

audio/visual system, loaded two custom

music programs, placed cocktail tables with

white linen, created a top-shelf bar and

scented the room. Doors opened at midnight,

and the Red Rose party began.

Translucent red light filled the space. The

scent of dark chocolate wafted in the air.

Fresh red roses were placed on every table,

and waitresses passed delicate hors d’oeuvres

and strong chocolate martinis. Falling rose

petals drifted down a digital video screen

while “At Last” by Etta James flooded the

room. A pure emotion – true love – bloomed

in sound, scent, tastes and sights.

A few minutes before 1am, the sounds of Ella

Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong slowly faded

out, and James Brown kicked in – the Eight

Ball party had begun. The power of an eight

ball slamming into the corner pocket of a

pool table, evoked by AC/DC, shots of Jack

Daniel’s and the scent of tobacco and leather.

In just a few minutes, and with a few strategic

changes, an environment fit for a stylish

boutique or sidewalk bistro was wholly

transformed into a hard-charging roadhouse.

And in two hours, Muzak demonstrated our

unique ability to create a sensory experience

– while showing the artists, record labels and

song publishers in attendance the sophistica-

tion that surrounds the use of their content in

Muzak programs. “The party made the

concept of creating experiences with music

tangible and easy to understand,” said Jason

McCormick. “And more artists and record

labels saw the opportunity for their music

to connect with people in a context that’s

completely different from radio or any

other format.”

Music industry members also see the possibil-

ity in Muzak’s ability to extend a client’s brand

experience – and an artist’s reach – beyond

the store environment. Through Muzak’s

relationships with thousands of record labels,

A RED ROSE FOR MY LOVE

publishers and other audio branding and dis-

tribution partners, Muzak can place music on

clients’ Web sites, branded compilation CDs,

music download stores and many other customer

touchpoints. Along with even more opportunities

for clients to connect with their customers, these

audio branding capabilities provide new expo-

sure opportunities for Muzak’s roster of artists.

The artists in Muzak’s catalog have a chance

to connect with 100 million people every day.

Muzak clients have access to the best music from

all over the world. It’s a relationship that helps

keep new music alive, and brings brands to life.

“The concept of creating experiences with music was

tangible and easy to understand. And more artists

and record labels saw their music in a context that’s

completely different from radio or any other format.”

BRAND EXPERIENCE STUDY : GLOBALSHOP 2008

Page 60: Marissa Ferrari Portfolio

That was the question posed by Muzak at

GlobalShop 2008, the world’s largest annual

retail design event. For the third time, Muzak

created a booth experience that won the hearts

of top tastemakers. And for the first time, the

world’s most admired retailers experienced a

new way to see – and hear – brand expression.

To explore and demonstrate the concept of

brand expression, the Muzak booth experience

was composed around two central elements –

a visually arresting high-definition image gallery

and a constantly evolving custom music

experience. Included in the image gallery were

hundreds of larger-than-life portraits of people

expressing one of four strong emotions – Angst,

Desire, Elation and Pride – on 14 high-defini-

tion plasma screens.

“The initial group of photographs featured

many of the nearly 1,300 Muzak team

members who support our clients,” said Bob

Finigan, vice president of product

and marketing for Muzak.

What if the expression of your brand was as easy to read as the look on your face?

“ They all have their own unique personality, and a very personal way of expressing themselves. So does a brand.”

Page 64: Marissa Ferrari Portfolio

And the contrast was heightened by a dramatic

shift in the music experience. The sound of

each emotion was defined in a custom music

program created by Muzak’s Audio Architecture

team. Songs like “Mother” from Danzig and

“Come Thru” from DMX gave voice to Angst,

while songs like “Archangel” by Burial and

“Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak captured

Desire for the booth experience participants.

In addition to experiencing the image gallery

and custom music program, GlobalShop

attendees became active participants in the

Muzak booth concept. The same photographer

who shot Muzak’s team member portraits was

on hand to capture representatives from Ann

Taylor, BCBG Max Azria, DSW and other top

retailers as they expressed one or more of the

four emotions.

“Most people wouldn’t associate Muzak with

visual merchandising or store design,” said Bob

Finigan. “But music has the most direct – and

most powerful – impact on the retail customer

experience. And when music is combined with

in-store messaging, sound system and visual

solutions that create complete and authentic

brand experiences, the results are clear:

memorable customer experiences that

define the true expression of a brand.”

To continue the GlobalShop experience long

after the event, Muzak created an interactive

Web site geared toward booth participants. The

site, http://expressions.muzak.com, include the

Angst, Desire, Elation and Pride custom music,

as well as a searchable photo feature. Site visi-

tors can search by name or company for their

photo, browse photos of colleagues or send a

link to a friend.

Every few minutes, the image gallery was completely transformedas a new expression was featured.

Issue Date: August 2008, Posted On: 8/6/2008 Workout Music: the Ultimate Motivational Tool By Kristi Britt-Stearns Be a PFP Writer!

Have you ever noticed the way your body just loosens up when your favorite song comes on? It doesn't matter if you're in the car or cleaning the house, you just feel compelled to move it! It works the same way for your clients. Music can help create effective workouts by helping clients amp up their energy, maintain their drive and keep their focus — whether they’re squeezing in 30 minutes of abs or pounding through 60 minutes of step. But what types of music are most effective? Do you need different sounds for different classes and areas in your facility? And what can you expect when your music program is in place? Consider a handful of factors before you get started, and you and your clients will see results quickly. The Heart of the MatterHeart rate: If there’s such a thing as a “buzz phrase,” this is it. Especially with the increasing availability of heart rate monitors that are both more effective and less expensive, plenty of cardio enthusiasts are tracking their workouts by zeroing in on their heart rate. Unfortunately, we’ve all experienced an exercise session that just doesn’t help us raise our heart rate quickly and maintain it for a period of time.Fortunately, heart rate has a workout buddy: beats per minute, or BPM. Every song, from a languid ballad to a pounding dance track, can be described in terms of beats per minute. And a song’s BPM serves as a simple yardstick to help evaluate when and where it may be effective as part of a music program. The focal point of many fitness facility music programs is cardio studios. While clients probably tune into their personal playlists on the treadmill, they need to be able to hear the instructor’s commands during group exercise. And if those commands are timed to a song with a higher BPM, the participants will be stepping, reaching and jumping faster — and, you guessed it, their heart rates will be rising faster. So what’s the magic number? A minimum BPM of 132 is the accepted industry standard. Some facilities advocate a higher number, but as long as your songs range from 132 to 170 BPM, your clients will be able to reach their target heart rate and maintain it without difficulty. If you're having trouble translating BPM to music you’re familiar with, keep this in mind: The typical dance track is between 122 and 128 beats per minute. This also means that it’s likely you’ll have to seek out music specially

designed for fitness environments to find the higher BPM you need. Moving Beyond CardioWhile your cardio studios may be the heart of your facility, chances are there may be other areas where music can provide a boost before and after cardio sessions. Consider all of your facility’s functional areas: your lobby, locker rooms, juice bar or café, spa, child care center, etc. Because these areas aren’t so heart rate-focused, you’re free to create music experiences that incorporate a wide variety of song tempos, genres, eras and styles.Consider your lobby or entrance. This area may be the place to incorporate those high-energy dance tracks that don’t quite make the minimum 132 BPM cut. Invigorating music that helps clients get pumped up the moment they walk in the door will also help them get their workout off to the right start. The music in your weight room can serve a similar purpose. Lively rock, pop and R&B can motivate clients to push beyond tired muscles to get in just one more set. Keep in mind that this is also an opportunity to balance the needs of different clients. While many weight rooms may be dominated by power-lifting males, more females are starting to appreciate the benefits of a weight routine. If your music program is weighted heavily toward aggressive metal and the like, the experience may amplify the intimidation many women feel when beginning a lifting program. Instead, try incorporating accessible music such as college rock, ‘80s and ‘90s tracks or mainstream hits to help everyone feel welcome. It’s the Little Things That CountNow that you’ve created a solid foundation for your music experience, give some thought to a few minor details that can make a big difference. Just as you might create seasonal marketing campaigns, consider adjusting your music program to fit the changing seasons. The workout experience — and clients’ expectations — can vary widely, especially when it comes to outdoor temperatures. In-store messages can also reinforce seasonal promotions, along with your overall marketing and branding initiatives. Blended with your music experience, in-store messages can point clients toward different parts of your facility, promote new services or even provide helpful workout tips. Be sure to update your messages regularly so clients always know what’s new. Also, be realistic about how often you’ll be in the facility to make adjustments to your music. Many owners and managers, especially when operating multiple locations, can’t always be on-site. If this applies to you, look for a music solution that offers online control for both music and messaging. Online control is especially helpful if you entrust employees to manage day-to-day operations but want to personally ensure your music experience is consistent. Finally, consider the quality of your sound system. If you invest a lot of energy in creating the perfect music program for your clients, you can’t afford to compromise the experience with crackly speakers or audio that fades in and out unexpectedly. There is an incredibly wide range in the quality and price of sound system components — a local professional can help you design a system that meets your needs and fits your budget.Kristi Britt-Stearns is Vice President of Local Sales for Muzak, which creates custom music experiences for the world’s most admired brands — including The Circuit, a high-energy mix of dance, R&B, pop and rock that maintains a minimum 132 BPM.
