HELLO

How shall we meet and appreciate other members of our Oxford Senior Center? One Fri-day program, members of the staff were intro-ducing themselves to the membership. One of our members approached me saying how won-derful the staff is and how much she appreciat-ed their contributions. But did I realize she did not know who the trustees are and had no idea what they do. Half-jokingly, I responded that they probably did not know who she was either. She does know some trustees without recogniz-ing them as such. Probably we cannot all know one another now that our membership exceeds five hundred. But are there ways we might be-come closer? We do not all have the same interests and are not attracted to the center for the same reasons even at the same times. The building could not hold all of us at the same time. The Fire Mar-shall would greatly object if we were to try gath-ering together at one time. Certainly, we have many varied activities and we have formed some friendships enjoying these. The strongest, most enthusiastic events I’ve seen have been the Masters Games. By the way, we have until the end of the month to reg-ister. It seems friendly competition draws us to-gether. Some of these games require exertion while others are more cerebral. All Masters Games events afford the opportunity to play and laugh together. Please consider joining us whether you are new or returning. Lunches at The Top of the Hill Café afford us an opportunity to break bread together while eating good food at a very reasonable price. I’ve repeatedly heard the food has improved greatly over the last months. Lunches cost only $2.50 and are complete and nutritious. Basically, the only requirement is we reserve a lunch before 9:00 of that day. Friday lunches are quite special and lead into programs varying widely from musical entertain-ment of information and celebrations of birth-

days and anniversaries. Food is covered dish and prepared by members for sharing in addi-tion to some outside sources sending us goods. Almost always we have a pianist provide a mu-sical background during lunch. Our crafts, studies, exercise classes, games, celebrations of birthdays and anniversaries and movies are offered throughout each month. Should you love dancing and want to see members cutting a rug, come to the Wednesday afternoon dances complete with live music by The Primetimers. Line dancing resumes in Au-gust also. Occasionally the Adult Day Service members also join us, coming from Faith Lutheran. WOW! Did I digress from my starting question, distracted by the myriad opportunities? I guess the answer rests in each of us reaching his or her hand to the neighbor and introducing our-selves to one another. It seems the challenge rests not so much with what the Center can do for me but what can I do to reach to another while enjoying myself. Oh, by the way, my name is Rich, what’s yours? Rich Bement, President

The Oxford Seniors Board is updating our organizational mission statement as we also review our governing structure. The board will narrow the choices to three mission statement options that will be available for your review the week of August 7 to 14 at the sign in table. Please mark a ballot and let us know which one you like best.

Thank you for helping us choose!

Hello for August! Oxford Seniors continues to provide a variety of important impacts, with the support of United Way funding, to the older adults of our community. We are a designated “focal point” via our Area Agency on Aging (the Council on Aging), meaning that not only do we operate the center and its activities, but we provide a broader range of services including Meals on Wheels, assistance addressing “red tape” issues, caregiver support, transportation, nutritious lunches at two sites, and adult day services. I thought you might be interested in learning more about what specifically we have accomplished in the first six months of 2017. Our paid 2017 membership stands at 446 people over age 50, with a predominate skew to those over 70. Our active membership includes many people in their 90’s and a few 100 or a bit older. The congregate lunch program has served 2148 meals, January to June, in Oxford and Reily. Two hundred units of recreation activity have been tracked, meaning that these specifically fit Council on Aging wellness requirements, and involve no less than three participants. Many other center activities have also occurred, involving others who may have only visited once, and who are not included in our counts. Twenty seven caregiver support counseling sessions have occurred, serving about ten individuals through the timeframe. Outreach counseling services have assisted 114 older adult individuals for an average of 1.16 hours each since January. Another 100 family members or others, including professionals from other community services, have been assisted on issues related to aging. Several scores of seniors received income tax assistance from January to April 15, assisted by AARP trained volunteers.

Meals on Wheels has served 58 different individuals since January, delivering 5648 meals. Transportation has served 220 different riders, many using the service repeatedly for medical trips including life-saving kidney dialysis visits, for a total of 2664 rides during the report period. Adult Day Service has offered individualized care and family respite for 1008 days of service to 30 specific people and their families. As they say, it takes a village to raise a child, but I believe it takes a village AND MORE to support its older adults respectfully and in ways that help continue their contribution to their community. Oxford Seniors provides those opportunities. Research studies have proven that involvement in senior centers has a positive impact on one’s personal health. If you are involved now, please consider more ways to participate. If your membership has lapsed, please renew and reinvigorate your attendance. If you’ve never yet become involved, jump that barrier and join us! My best,

Thinking about downsizing to a rental unit?

Judith Kolbas

Downsizing that wonderful home that you cared for and enjoyed for years is always a painful situ-ation. However, it is also a relief. There’s no more worry about the roof, the air-conditioning, the yard, and the age of the furnace. Many people now consider renting rather than owning a smaller place, even a condo where some outside work is taken care of. For those people, there are some really good options in Oxford, but they are rare at the moment. The Oxford Village Network and the Housing Advisory Commission of the City of Oxford are trying to make this option both more affordable and accessible for seniors. That includes wider doorways, handrails in the bathroom and other age-friendly adaptions along with possible new rental sites. It is therefore important to know some of the details of rental agreements that a landlord or agent will present to you. In general, most leases now focus on the student calendar. This is not what you as a senior will need to deal with. Indeed, your lease can start at any time, not just 1 August, which is very common in Oxford. Moreover, your lease can last for certainly more than one year. It’s your choice - perhaps up to five or 10 years. Many landlords are happy to sign a long-term lease because then they don’t have to worry about finding a new tenant, cleaning the place and paying all those extra fees for turnover. This option then give some security to seniors who are renting since they will not be tipped out after one year just because the landlord wants to have somebody else. He/she doesn’t. Seniors are a good bet, and landlords know it. Moreover, the stress is now on intergenerational living. If seniors are around, graduate students or even young professionals, who are also renting, make the neighborhood more balanced and respectable than you might imagine. I, for one, live in an apartment building that has one other senior; but, other-wise, there are two young married couples who are graduate students and two other single young professionals. I find that they are helpful, and their cheerfulness is always a pleasant experience when we pass each other in the parking lot or the hallways. Indeed, for seniors, it is important to have contact with other people even if just a slight nod at the mailbox. Renting allows this to hap-pen and reminds us of the energy in an active university town. Another point about renting is that seniors can often benefit by having a pet. Some landlords do not allow them, but others do. The agent will know what the conditions are and will take a deposit for the special cleaning at the end of the lease. One agent charges according to the weight of the animal. If it is under 25 pounds, there is a one-time fee of $250. If it is over 25 pounds, the fee is $500. However, this is collected only once and will not be exacted again. Many seniors wish they could have a pet and think that perhaps renting would prohibit them from doing so. Not necessarily so. On the other hand, if you have close neighbors, they can look after the animals while you’re away visiting or on that cruise. Just think, if you rent, any problem you have can usually be fixed the afternoon you report it. You

Across America time station for a couple of years she got the itch to push herself to do something amazing. With three teammates, nine crew, and a host of supporters in Oxford and Brookville, Team Oxford Autoimmune completed the race under the nine day limit while raising over $6,000 for autoimmune disease research. Now she rides for fun which includes one week bike trips each year in various parts of France. In 2018 they are switching it up for a hiking tour in the Patagonia region of the Andes. She still wants to hike in Switzerland and bike ride in Austria. Fun fact- Few people would guess that Lisa used to show Rottweilers in conformation and obedience! can always call the city if you have a noise pollution problem or an infringement of the building code. The city has regulations regarding all of these points to protect you. Also, if you can find a place that is reasonably close to High Street or Tollgate Plaza and the new Bishop Square, you will have all sorts of access to shops, events and recreation without needing to be concerned about driving at night or for long distances - or even at all, if you’re a good walker. And many of us are or should be. More and more seniors are now considering renting as an extremely viable option from the neces-sity of caring for a house that is much too large or inappropriate for one or two people. They would rather do other things than worry about property. It’s time, instead, to experience life and enjoy the well-earned free time.

Caregiver Support Group

The Caregiver Support group meets twice a month: the second and fourth Thursday of each month. We meet in the conference room at the Oxford Senior Center at 1:15 pm. If you want to have lunch at the senior center, call the Oxford Seniors the day before to make a lunch reservation. Lunch is served around 12:15 pm. 513.523.8100

What is a caregiver support group?

* It is a safe haven for sharing true feelings (that won't be shared outside the meeting) * Every member understands the trials and the joys of caregiving * A place to make new friends * Information about resources and coping mechanisms * Advice on what lies ahead * Help dealing with family members If you are a caregiver and want some support, you are invited to attend the second and fourth Thursday of each month. For more information call Patricia Willeke 513.523.3321. Or email at [email protected].

A trip to both of these locations is planned for Thursday, August 17th. We will be leaving the center at 10am and returning at 3pm. The first stop will be at the Miami Valley Gaming casino, then to the Cincinnati Premium Outlet. Lunch will be on your own. However, it is Senior Day at the casino and you can have a lunch buffet for $9.99. In addition, we are asking for a suggest-ed donation of $8 for transportation. Please see the sign up sheet in the office or call 523-8100 to be added to the list.

Oxford Pool Players Post 3-2 Record During Last Five Weeks

The rivalry between pool teams from Oxford Seniors and Hamilton continues as hot as SW Ohio’s summer weather. Over the last five weeks of play, the local billiards guys bested their Hamilton counterparts three matches to two during the weekly Thursday afternoon competitions at the Oxford Senior Center. Results of the last five weeks of play: June 15 – Trailing after each of the first four rounds, Oxford’s sharpshooters rallied to win four of the five fifth-round games to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, 197-196. June 22 – Avenging the previous Thurs-day’s narrow defeat, Hamilton led all the way in this match en route to a 193-173 win. June 29 – Oxford jumped out to a huge ear-ly lead by winning 12 of the first 13 games and coasted to an easy 292-234 victory. July 6 – Trailing by as many as 32 points during the first four rounds, Oxford’s pool sharks took eight of the final nine games to win, 283-270. July 13 – Despite leading by eight points after the first four rounds, the home team’s green felt was unkind to the Oxfordians, who lost six of the last seven games of the day to fall, 197-187.

Beginning Line Dancing

FYI, Did you know that among all the exercise programs we can add to our daily lives to chal-lenge us, dancing is the most beneficial activity for both the mind and body! There are beginning line dance classes sched-uled to start at 2:00pm, Thursday, August 3rd. Why not add line dancing to your activities and stay fit mentally and physically. At least take the first step—give it a slot on your cross train list. Mark your calendar for August 3rd. See you and your friends there!

Congratulations to the winners of our raffle that was held during our Members’ Annual Picnic: The trellis, made by Fred Kolb,

was won by Mike Broida and the stepping stone, made by Loma Wynn, was won by Elaine McLean.

Tuesday August 1st and 15th to play chair volleyball with our friends there. Departure time is 10:15 am for those who would like to go. On Tuesday August 8th we will go to the Knolls of Oxford and visit with past clients and friends and join in and play bingo. Departure time is 10:15 am. On Friday August 18th we will be going to the senior center for the carry in lunch. We will also be enjoying the music by John Bercaw and his band the Aristocrats. We would like to welcome Jeni Evans back to the ADS staff. She will be filling in on days when full time staff members need time off. Jeni used to work here full time before resigning her position to go to school. We were very fortunate to have several volunteers from the “Wooden Institute” come and weed the flower beds here at the ADS. We can always use help in the garden area – if you would like to volunteer your time we would greatly appreciate it. Our clients Peggy and Rose working on weeding the garden could always use your help and would enjoy your company!

If you would like information on the ADS please

call Debbie Curry at 513-523-0464

As I sit down to write the August newsletter, I am getting ready to leave for Florida this afternoon. My mind is filled with all the last minute things that I will have to get finished before we head on down the road. While I am on vacation, my husband and I will be working on finalizing the details for our 25th wedding anniversary vow renewal in August. I know these will be great memories to share with our families in the future. I hope to make a scrapbook of special events in my life and encourage you do to the same to share with your loved ones and the upcoming generations. I know I love to look back at albums of my grandparents and great grandparents. It can also be a great tool for people who have dementia or Alzheimer’s. We are grateful for the recent outdoor furniture donation we received. We will set up the gently used outdoor furniture in our garden area. We look forward to being able to have lunch in the garden area on cooler days. We have 4 birthdays to celebrate this month. Staff Member Marcia Schlichter’s birthday is August 1st. Eva R. celebrates on the 7th and Our “Colonel” William H. and Staff member Stacy Lay share a birthday on August 18th. We would like to wish all 4 a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY! We will be enjoying drumming fun with our friend Pete Carels in a drum circle on Wednesday August 2nd at 2:00 pm. Please feel free to join us. On Monday afternoons at 2:00 pm David Palmer will be here to play the piano and lead us in a sing along. He does take requests. Please feel free to come and join in the fun! Mike Johnson will be here on the Thursday August 17th at 11:00 am to lead us in a non-denomination interactive devotional hour. All are welcomed to join. We will travel to Pristine Senior living on
