My Most Favor i te bar Story by Jen Short

Not only was the ambiance perfect, but the drinks were made so well. Just watching the bartenders making their drinks, they really know what they're doing. and every taste and placement had a lot of thought put into it. It's a really intimate setting and they only allow a certain number of people inside at a time so keep the numbers low. I wasn't straining to hear my friends and it just had a really relaxed vibe. They have a little notebook near the bar that you can write in so that's kind of cute. My friend and I drew little pictures and wrote our names inside to say we were there! hahaBut anyway, this secret bar is inside the Neighborhood restau-rant. You have to go toward the bathrooms and push the wall

We got so lost our first time...and i was like wow that Uber guy totally trolled us and got us to walk to the bathrooms .BUT IT WASN"T! hahaha anyway..put your names down and they'll text you when they have an opening! We stayed there and just chilled in the restaurant but you might as well explore the surrounding areas/bars in the meantime because it'll take a while.

“I love this speakeasy”

though. There are so many little things that make it justa hidden gem in the back of the Neighborhood restaurant. A tiny speakeasy behind a wall of kegs. Such a nice and inti-mate place! Unfortunately, my friends and I were unable to get a seat because of the long wait so we decided to have beers and food at the Neigh-borhood. We will definitely Since the place is small, it would be best to make a reser-vation ahead of time by simply texting a phone number! (619) 888-4713, Cool little hidden spot in the back of the Neigh-

Battle of the BartendersNew York to San Francisco

These two men are the finest in the buisness. After Searching for three whole years our team uncovered the very best of the bet home the trophy, who will be the new champion for 2014 and ultimately, who gets to take home $1 million dollars. Two bartenders from across the countrty

For those of you local SD peeps you may remember a real, and real is an understatement dive bar on the corner of 30th and Adams called Kadans. It reeked of vomit, sweat

and old booze soaked carpet. Walking up to Polite Provisions you immediately notice the old timer, prohibition, drug store, old school soda fountain kinda decor/design with gas lanterns, a dated drug store sign and big open windows. When I walked in I was blown away by how beautiful it is, now perhaps my opinion is slightly skewed as I was a regular at the old Kadans where I very much enjoyed their dollar drink tokens during happy hour, which I would purchase 20 dollars worth then use later in the evening, possibly contributing to its demise... anyways back to Polite Provisions. They did a complete overhaul from the floor to the ceiling. The ceiling! It is gorgeous, I love the design of the entire place, although it can get very cramped when busy and hard to ma-neuver through. The tile in the bathroom is actually Nickles, not tile. The Mixologists aka Bartenders are awesome, and the drinks are even better. Usually in places like this in SD you get

a bunch of hipster to cool for school and too cool to be nice to my customer types, but here I found everyone to be nice, friendly and personable even when they are slammed. They don't have food per say but attached to the bar by the bathrooms is a door that takes you into Soda and Swine, another really nice, open airy, but small butcher shop themed kinda joint. You can order food there and they will bring it in to PP where you are sitting. Overall- its a great little spot in one of my favorite areas of SD, excellent and ever changing craft cocktails, great ambiance, friendly staff. I definitely recommend checking it out. Consider-ing what’s in the area, there aren’t many places with the unique feel and atmosphere that Polite Provisions offers. They have a really cool roaring 20s, prohibition era reminiscent decor that just gives off a really cool vibe. They have a very extensive cocktail list and a fairly decent beer list as well. It also shares space with Soda & Swine which is definitely convenient for grabbing a bite to eat and bringing it back to wherever you are seated. Additionally, the food there is pretty good too but that’s another review...The downside is that since this is “the spot”, it gets straight up packed, especially on a Saturday night. We’re talking packed with people with signal flasher eyes whipping around, twisting truly appreciated the service I received from the bartender when I grabbed a round of drinks for our party. She was absolutely awesome, I only wish I would have grabbed her name! While chatting during the drink making process I noticed how much attention to detail she put into the drink. A friend ordered one of She literally rough when you have to wait roughly 15-20 min-utes between each one you get. Additionally, I must just have

bad luck when places keep running out of the beer I want too. Outside of the long waits due to the crowds, the servers are very nice and If you live in the area, this place is probably a pretty good choice considering you can get here early and not have to worry too much about the wait time between drinks on weekend, since you probably aren’t going to have to waste time on com-muting. However, for an “out of towner” such as myself, I can’t really see myself making the drive out here just to ultimately have to fight the crowds and then wait some more. Perhaps ear-ly during a weekday, or maybe Sunday I might have better luck.

Not saying it is atrociously bad, I was just a little disappointed.Aside from that, I do have to hand it to them for having a pretty cool setup. If I’m already hanging out with friends in the area, I might give this place another shot but I’ll probably just skip the weekend and try them for Happy Hour. A cozy little location in Normal Heights I had the chance to head to Sycamore Den to watch The Jackson Price Band perform. My wife is friends with one of the members and they blew the place up. Great perfor-mance, awesome bar! I truly appreciated the service I received from the bartender when I grabbed a round of drinks for our party. She was absolutely awesome, I only wish I would have grabbed her name! While chatting during the drink making process I noticed how much attention to detail she put into the drink. A friend ordered one of the foofy fancy drinks and the bar-tender stirred, and stirred, and stirred that drink to perfection. She literally was stirring for a good 90 seconds, it was awesome. I made a comment to her about how she was a master of her

craft and she laughed and said the drinks that come from the bar are a representation of her and she didn’t want crap leaving there. I think most of us professionals could learn a lesson from that mindset - well done! All drinks were reasonably priced, ser-vice was excellent, and the ambiance was pretty cool as well. Only downside to this bar is the parking, as mentioned in other reviews. We went on Friday night and it was brutal. We ended up parking in the surrounding neighborhood about a 1/4 mile away from the bar. Given the limited parking we were grate-ful to find something that close. Normal Heights be hoppin’ on Friday nights, so beware! Great spot that I’ll definitely head to if I’m in the area again

“D Bar stands for Drinks, Dining, and Dancing!”

I’m an extra spread that couldn’t decide what to be. Their dessert drinks and desserts are amazing! I had the salted caramel cocktail and it was soooo good. I was hap-pily buzzed I tried most of their desserts and every single one did not disappoint! The price is slight-ly pricy but I think it’s worth it. Their truffle fries were so good.

Build your own craftcocktail bar at home

The alcohol has not changed a lot over the years, stick to the basics, get yourself some gin, whiskey, vodka, tequila and rum. With those you can make about 500 different drinks.

The tools haven’t changed much over the years, fact most of them have been used since prohibition, there are a few that will make life easy, but expensive.

You will need to start with a set of tools, pretty much everything you will need will be at your local gro-cery store, but if you have a Bevmo go there, they will have everything you will need for this project, in fact at the end of we list names and prices of things to get.

2 TIP: When your searching for good alcohol remember that the price will always be higher for the better stuff, it has to do with how long it takes to make, and the older the better. Stuff that is cheap will taste like rubbing alcohol.

Your also gong to need a few ingredients that you’ve probably never heard of but they will take the bit out of your drinks initial taste, it will smoother drink.

Of course you will need to something to put your drinks in so do some shopping around and find the best deal on the what looks nice to you, personalize it.

The next step is to choose you mixers these are the juices and other things that will make up the most of the drink.

TIP: Glassware is one my best personal addictions, there are so many different types of glasses out there and for the glassmaker its an art form. I’m the type of person that is always stealing the glasses from.

TIP: You can change the taste of your drinks by adding all kinds of things to make them sweeter or salty. Try making your drinks with sea salt or honey.

6Invite all your friends and have a great time making new names up for drinks, it will be a ton of fun.
