Course Objectives The course is designed to provide you with a foundation for ethical decision-making as well as basic knowledge and abilities in three areas: 1) cost measurement and use for management decisions, 2) cost measurement and assignment for internal and external reporting, and 3) cost planning and control. After successfully completing this course, you will be able to

4. Calculate product costs using job order costing; allocate over and under applied overhead, journalize related transactions.

5. Compare activity based costing (ABC) and activity based management (ABM) to traditional product costing and management methods; identify the advantages and disadvantages of ABC/ABM and traditional methods.

6. Prepare master and flexible budgets. 7. Calculate, journalize, and interpret sales and cost variances. 8. Use net present value, internal rate of return, and payback period to evaluate long-term capital

projects; explain why NPV is considered to be a superior evaluation technique. 9. Explain the fundamental effects of income taxes and inflation in capital budgeting, and adjust the

capital project analysis techniques accordingly. Your understanding of the course and ability to meet these objectives will be measured by the following: 1. homework; 2. quizzes and exams; 3. a comprehensive final examination; 4. spreadsheet assignments.

Faculty and Student Responsibilities: The College of Business web page contains the statement of

responsibilities assumed by the faculty member and the students enrolled in this course. Please read this information. The link is located at http://business.utep.edu/About/responsibilities.aspx.

Class Policies & Procedures: Laptops: You may bring your laptop to class except on exam days. Please adhere to the following guidelines with respect to laptops in the classroom:

Charge your laptop batteries fully before coming to class.

Set your laptop volume control to mute or off before coming to class.

Keep your laptop closed during presentation and other specific in-class activities.

Do not engage in unauthorized communications or entertainment (web surfing, instant messaging, chat room chatting, DVD viewing, music playing, game playing, etc.) during class unless it is part of the lesson.

If you are caught violating these policies, you will be prohibited from using your laptop at all during class for the remainder of the semester. Cell Phones: You may bring your cell phones to class, subject to the following guidelines:

Set your phone to mute or silent mode before coming to class.

Do not answer incoming calls or make outgoing calls.

Do not use text messaging or web browser features while in class. If you answer your phone during class, or are caught texting or surfing the web, the first time you will be asked to turn your phone off and leave it up front with me until the end of class. If there is a second time, you will be asked to leave and not return that class period. This includes exam days – so if you use your phone on an exam day, you are done with the exam at that point, regardless of whether or not you have completed the exam.

If there is a third time, you’ll be asked to leave class and you will be reported to the Dean of Students. If you are expecting an important call (for example, your significant other is stationed in Afghanistan and can only call during certain hours, or your daycare provider needs to be able to contact you in the event your child becomes ill), please let me know BEFORE your phone goes off. Other Wireless Devices (PDAs, MP3 players, SmartPhones etc.):

Shut off the device or set it to mute before coming to class.

Do not use text messaging or web browser features while in class The same penalties listed for cell phones apply to these devices. Calculators: No programmable calculators are allowed for exams. Business calculators are fine.

Blackboard: We will be using Blackboard for a variety of tasks in this course. Instructor provided class materials will be made available through Blackboard. If you are registered for the course, but do not have access to the course in Blackboard, please let me know immediately. Turning in Assignments - General: Using the MyAccounting Lab software, each chapter assignment has an assigned due date and an assigned time. You will not be able to complete your homework for a particular chapter after the due date and time has expired. MyAccountingLab Software: Homework and quizzes will be submitted through MyAccountingLab. This is Pearson’s version of Connect, which many of you are familiar with through its use in Principles and Intermediate. Separate instructions for purchasing access and registering for the class are provided in a separate handout available in Blackboard under the Course Content area. When you complete your registration, please type your name as instructed (First, MI, Last), and use regular capitalization. In other words, the first letter of your first name, your middle initial, and your last name should be capitalized. Other letters should be lower case. Attendance: You are expected to arrive on time, stay for the entire class, and actively participate. If you must leave early, please let me know before class begins. You wouldn’t walk out of a meeting with your boss or the Board, so please don’t walk out during class, either. I will not drop you for non-attendance. It is your responsibility to withdraw from the class, if that is your wish. If you miss class, for whatever reason, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and what is due before the next class. Late and/or Missed Assignments: Late work is not accepted. No make- up exams are available. Exceptions are listed under “Excused Absences”, below.

Excused Absences: Absences due to illness (your own or an immediate family member in your care) will be excused if you provide me with documentation from a licensed physician. Immediate family means a spouse, a child, a parent, a brother, a sister, or a grand-parent, if you are responsible for their care.

Occasionally, other absences (besides medical) may be excused. This is decided on a case-by-case basis. Without exception, appropriate written documentation must be provided. If you miss an exam, the final exam grade will count as the missing exam score. If you miss more than one exam, we will discuss your options on an individual basis. If you miss the final exam, you will receive an “I” for the course and must make up the final exam at a mutually agreed upon time. I realize your jobs are important. However, work related absences are not excused. If you must miss class because of work obligations, please contact me before you miss class so we can discuss your options. Scholastic Dishonesty (aka, Cheating): Please read the section on Student Dishonesty on page 6 of this syllabus. All work should be assumed to be individual, unless specifically identified as collaborative work. You should do your own work, not copy someone else’s work. Copying, all or in part, of other students’ work is unacceptable. If you are caught doing so, you and the person you copied from will be turned over to the Office of the Dean of Student Life for disciplinary action. Withdrawing from the Class with a “W: In order to receive a “W” in this course, you must drop by April 5, 2013. It is your responsibility to drop by the automatic “W” deadline. After the student drop deadline, students will be dropped with a grade of “F” except under extraordinary circumstances. This policy is strictly adhered to. You may view the policy at this URL: http://academics.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=66185. Students with Special Needs: If you have, or believe you may have, a condition requiring special accommodations, contact the Disabled Student Services Office (DSSO) located in room 306 Union East. Their phone number is 747-5148. Their email address is [email protected]. Only students registered with DSSO may receive special accommodations. Your accommodation letter should be returned to me by the end of the second week of class.

Course Grade Components Homework: Most homework assignments from the textbook will be turned in through MyAccountingLab. The four (4) Excel assignments must be turned in to me during the first 10 minutes of class time on the due date. Assignments not turned in at this time will not be graded. Quizzes: Most quizzes will be completed in MyAccountingLab. However, I reserve the right to give the class unannounced in-class quizzes. No late submissions are accepted. Exams: Four exams are scheduled during the semester. No make-up exams are given, but your lowest exam score will be replaced by the final exam, assuming the final exam grade is higher. If you do not receive an

excused absence from a scheduled exam, your final exam score may be substituted for the missing exam, however a 15% penalty will be applied to that missing grade. Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive. There is no minimum required grade on the final to pass the class.

Spreadsheet Assignment: Detailed instructions will be provided separately. This assignment is an individual assignment. Your work must be original and entirely yours, and you must also turn in the formulas used in completing your spreadsheet.

Course Grading Structure: There are no extra credit assignments available in this class. Your grade will

be based exclusively on your performance on the assigned coursework.

University Policies: Notice of Copyright Infringement: Copying a textbook is a violation of U.S. copyright law. Violation of U.S. copyright law can result in civil damages up to $100,000 for each work copied. Copying of textbooks is not “fair use” under the Copyright Act. The “fair use doctrine” only permits non-commercial copying of part (generally not more than 10%) of a copyrighted work. Please do not bring copied textbooks to this class. Use of Technology in the Classroom The University of Texas at El Paso supports the use of technology for learning. We also understand that the use of laptops can be an asset to some students and help them in their note-taking and learning. That being said, we also believe that students should have diverse learning experiences and be adaptable to different styles of learning and note-taking. Students are expected to follow the rules and guidelines established by instructors for each class that they are taking, and to make a conscious effort to adapt to learning environments that may vary across instructors, classrooms, and disciplines.

Course Repeat Fee: If a student repeats a course for a third time, an additional fee of $100 per credit hour will be imposed. Three-time Rule: The University has adopted a policy that limits undergraduate course enrollment. In most instances a student may enroll in an undergraduate class a maximum of three times, except with the permission of the student’s academic dean. This includes enrollments that result in a grade of “W”, “F”, “D”, or “P”. A student may not enroll in a course in which a grade of “C” or higher has been previously earned. Moreover, a student may not enroll in a course in which he or she has an unresolved grade of “I”. A student may enroll more than three times in a course that is identified as “may be repeated for credit.” Scholastic Dishonesty: The University of Texas at El Paso prides itself on its standards of academic excellence. In all matters of intellectual pursuit, UTEP faculty and students must strive to achieve based on the quality of work produced by the individual. In the classroom and in all other academic activities, students are expected to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity. Any form of academic dishonesty is an affront to the pursuit of knowledge and jeopardizes the quality of the degree awarded to all graduates of UTEP. It is imperative, therefore, that the members of this academic community understand the regulations pertaining to academic integrity and that all faculty, insist on adherence to these standards. Any student who commits an act of academic dishonesty is subject to discipline. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, and any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts. Proven violations of the detailed regulations, as printed in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP) and available in the Office of the Dean of Student Life and on the homepage of the Dean of Students at www.utep.edu.dos, may result in sanctions ranging from disciplinary probation, to a failing grade on the work in question, to a failing grade in the course, to suspension or dismissal, among others. Student Standards of Conduct: Each student is responsible for notice of and compliance with the provisions of the Regents' Rules and Regulations and the rules of the University. Copies of the Regents' Rules and Regulations and all University rules are available for review in the office of: President, Vice President for Student Affairs, Dean of Student Life, Student Activities, and the University Library. All students are expected and required to obey the law, to comply with the Regents' Rules and Regulations, with System and University rules, with directives issued by an administrative official in the course of his or her authorized duties, and to observe standards of conduct appropriate for the University. A student who enrolls at the University is charged with the obligation to conduct him/herself in a manner compatible with the University's function as an educational institution. Any student who engages in conduct that is prohibited by Regents' Rules and Regulations, UT System or University rules, specific instructions issued by an administrative official or by federal, state, or local laws is subject to discipline whether such conduct takes place on or off campus or whether civil or criminal penalties are also imposed for such conduct. Policy on Disruptive Acts: The obstruction or disruption of any teaching, research, administrative, disciplinary, public service or other authorized activity on campus or under the authority of the University or on property owned or controlled by the University is prohibited and will subject the student or group of students to disciplinary action.
