Mariners rally past Deltas

The Deltaville Deltas split a pair of games with the Peninsula Pirates last week and lost to the Middle Peninsula Mariners 9-7 (see related story).

On Sunday, the Deltas and Pirates played to a 1-1 tie going into the seventh inning when the Pirates went on a 10-run ram-page, aided by a series of Deltas errors. The visiting Pirates posted a 11-1 win.

Both teams collected six hits. For the Deltas, Kyle Center had

two doubles, while Zack Holder-fi eld, Eric Gentry and Brett Craw-ford each singled.

Deltas starter Jay Moore lasted 6 2/3 innings, faced 30 batters, gave up four hits and seven runs. He struck out six and walked fi ve.

Brandon Hanks relieved and gave up four runs on two hits and a walk before he got the fi nal out of the inning.

On July 18, the Deltas racked up 16 hits en route to a 7-5 win over the Peninsula Pirates.

The host Pirates tied it at 3-3 in the sixth inning. The Deltas responded with three runs in the seventh and an insurance run in the eighth.

Kyle Center led Deltas with four hits, including a triple and a double. He scored twice and drove in an RBI.

Dave Cunningham tripled, sin-gled twice for an RBI, scored and stole a basee. Eric Gentry doubled twice for two RBIs and scored. Neal Hogge singled twice.

The Middle Peninsula Mari-ners split a doubleheader Sat-urday with the West End Twins. Middle Peninsula won the fi rst game 12-7, but had to forfeit the second game after an injury left them one player short.

The Twins took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fi rst inning on a three-run single.

Middle Peninsula runs scored two runs in the bottom half of the fi rst on a double by Scott Crump to cut the lead to 3-2.

West End loaded the bases in the third inning, but was limited to just one run on an RBI-single.

The Mariners answered in the bottom of the inning when Crump scored on an error.

Errors and walks extended the Twins lead to 7-3 in the fourth inning.

Middle Peninsula began to chip away at the four-run lead in the bottom of the fourth. Colin Walsh led off with a walk and was advanced to third on a double by David Smiy. Both run-ners would score when shortstop Kevin Davis singled. Ryan Norris brought home Davis on single, cutting the Twins lead to 7-6.

Mariners’ starter Jonathan Dehoux settled in on the mound by striking out the side in the fi fth and not allowing any more runs in the game. Dehoux struck out 8 in his 7 innings of work.

The game was blown open by the Mariners in bottom of sixth when they scored six runs. After an error and a walk to start the inning, Dehoux doubled in two runs to give the Mariners the lead. Norris followed with an RBI-single. Gary Williams then singled and William Saunders hit an RBI-double. Jimmy Hudnall capped off the inning with a two-run single, giving the Mariners a 12-7 edge.

After a lead off single, Dehoux shutdown the Twins in the sev-enth to seal the win.

The Middle Peninsula Mari-ners scored seven runs in the fi nal two innings Friday to seize a 9-7 comeback win over the Deltaville Deltas at Deltaville Ball Park.

“It was good to see that our boys worked hard for a full nine innings and come back to win the ballgame,” said Mariners coach Garland Harrow.

Mariners’ centerfi elder David Smiy got things going in the top of the fi rst inning when he knocked the second pitch of the game over the left fi eld fence for a home run.

The lead was quickly erased in the bottom half of the fi rst as the Deltas scored fi ve runs. Ryan Wiggins and Zack Holderfi eld each picked up one-out singles to start the inning for the Deltas; Matt Brown was then hit by a pitch to load the bases; another walk and a Mariners’ error brought home three runs and put runners at fi rst and second; and Kyle Center cleared the bases with a two-run double to give the Deltas a 5-1 advantage.

Middle Peninsula cut the lead to 5-2 after a single by Colin Walsh allowed Travis Crump to score from second on a throwing error.

After a rough fi rst inning, Mar-iners pitcher William Saunders settled in on the mound and did not allow another run until the seventh inning. Saunders allowed 4 earned runs and struck out 4 in 6 innings of work.

Deltas pitcher Haile Lytton

settled in as well, allowing just 3 more hits. Lytton allowed one earned run and struck out 6 in 6 innings.

The score remained 5-2 until Deltas’ catcher Brett Crawford nailed a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give the

top of the eighth for the Mariners and hit a solo home run to left fi eld. Later in the inning, Scott Crump hit a two-run home run to cut the Deltas’ lead to 7-5.

Mariners’ reliever Jonathan Dehoux got a strikeout and a double play to hold the Deltas scoreless in the bottom half of the eighth.

Smiy started the winning rally in the ninth inning for the Mari-ners with a single and stolen base. Kevin Davis then walked to put runners at fi rst and second, and Rollins followed with a two-run double to left-center fi eld to tie the game at 7-7.

After a pitching change, Ryan Norris hit a two-run home run to leftfi eld, giving the Mariners a 9-7 lead.

Norris’ home run would stand to be the game-winning hit as Dehoux retired the Deltas in order in the bottom of the ninth inning.

offers a variety of programs and activities. Several programs are now in progress. Day Camp is entering week six and will con-tinue through August 24 for chil-dren ages 4 years, 9 months to 12 years. Limited space is still available for this camp. The Day Camp costs $75 per week for members, and $90 per week for non-members.

Other camps include Soccer Camp, which will be held July 30 to August 3 for children ages 6 to 15. The camp will be held at the Middlesex Sports Complex from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The cost of both camps is $30 for members and $45 for non-members. Golf Camp and Gymnastics Camp also will be offered in August. Please call 776-8846 for further information about registration.

Registration for the fall pro-grams of soccer, football, and After-School Program will begin on August 1. Fall soccer will be offered to children ages 3-15. Children 9-15 years of age will be placed on traveling teams and play youth from neighboring communities. The cost is $20 for members and $40 for non-mem-bers. Practices for the season will begin the week of Septem-ber 15.

Football will be offered for youth ages 11-13. Registration will begin on August 1. All youth must bring a shot record, physi-cal, and birth certifi cate before they are registered. The team must consist of 15 participants. The cost is $50 for members and $70 for non-members. There is a scholarship program for all

first light and continued through the weekend. About 8 a.m. the bite slowed and fishermen had to work for whatever else was caught. Fish seem to be settling into their normal mid-summer locations. We weighed no cita-tions over the past week but sev-eral were caught and weighed elsewhere. We on the “Patriot” had a “hit and miss” week. We only had 7 fish including 2 keep-ers on Tuesday, then had about 25 flounder on Thursday and came home with 11 keepers up to 26 inches.

Spadefish continue to be avail-able at the Rappahannock Range Light, The Cell area and Wolftrap. Small fish dominate.

Charter boats are shifting their emphasis from croaker to

spot. Good sized spot have made an early showing in the mouth of the Piankatank and at The Spike. Bloodworms, Gulp artifi-cial chartruese bloodworms and Fish-Bites synthetic bloods are all working well.

The 5K walk/run will be held on Saturday, August 4. Regis-tration will be in Taber Park at 7:30 a.m. and the event starts at 8 a.m.

The entry fee is a donation. Those who participate or donate will be given a numbered ticket.

Tennis lessons for children ages 6 and up will be given at the Deltaville courts the week of August 6-10 from 6 to 7 p.m. each evening. There will be a $20 fee per student, which will be collected at the first lesson. Each student will need to bring a tennis racket. Registration forms

Three months after finishing second in a World of Outlaws Late Model Series event at Vir-ginia Motor Speedway, Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Geor-gia, returned to the half-mile oval in Jamaica and emerged victori-ous in Friday night’s scintillating Summer Sizzler 50 presented by Thurston Spring Service Inc.

Clanton started from the out-side pole in Ronnie Dobbins’ Custom-powered RSD Enter-prises Rocket, but he had to scratch and claw for every cent of the $10,000 first prize. He was involved in each of the feature’s six lead changes—four with Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, Pa., who fell from contention with mechanical trouble, and two with fellow WoO LMS regular Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky.

The final exchange of the top spot came on lap 45, when Clan-ton criss-crossed lanes with Lan-igan off turn four while racing through lapped traffic and nosed in front at the start/finish line.

Clanton held on to win by 0.539 of a second over Lanigan, whose charge from the eighth starting spot in his gottarace.com Rocket fell short.

In other action Tom Cohick of Gloucester picked up his fourth Victory Lap Late Model victory in convincing fashion.

In the Truckin Thunder Sports-man 30-lap feature Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg held off Roger Jamerson of Glen Allen for his fourth win of the season.

The Middlesex Methodist Charge is putting together another exciting and spirit-filled day.

Middlesex Charge plans bus trip to PennsylvaniaOn Friday, November 23,

there will be a bus trip to Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster,

Pa. Newton’s motor coach ser-vice will transport the group to Lancaster to see a Christian plan called “The Miracle of Christ-mas.”

After the play, the group will dine at The Good and Plenty Restaurant for a family-style meal consisting of two meats, all the vegetables one could want, breads, desserts, and drinks.

The coach leaves the Food Lion parking lot in Saluda at 6:30 a.m. and we should return around 10 p.m. The play starts at 1 p.m. and

dinner is at 4:15 p.m. The price includes coach, tips, taxes, play and dinner—all for $107.

Breakfast and snacks are not included. The bus will be stop-ping for a breakfast and “stretch-you-legs stop,” and a snack stop on the way back.
