A Message from the PrincipalWe offer a wide range of full-time and part-time courses at our campuses in Pwllheli and Rhos-on-Sea, including water sports, sailing, marine engineering and apprenticeships. Our outstanding facilities and teaching, along with our proximity to a wide range of marine organisations, make this the perfect place to study.

The marinas, sailing clubs and water sports centres around North Wales alone provide hundreds of jobs, and the proposed Pwllheli National Sailing Academy & Events Centre will create further opportunities for the Outdoor Sector, as well as boosting the local economy.

Whether you are leaving school and interested in a career in the marine industry or you are an experienced sailor looking to update your skills and knowledge, I hope you will find something in this brochure to suit you.

I look forward to welcoming you in the near future.

Glyn Jones OBEPrif Weithredwr / Pennaeth CEO / Principal

Marine Industry in North-West WalesThe UK maritime sector is the largest maritime sector in Europe and directly employs over 410,000 people. With a turnover of £56 billion the sector is bigger than automotive and more than double the size of aerospace and agriculture combined. Excellent opportunities exist for learners to progress into the industry at local, national and international levels.

Situated in North West Wales, Coleg Llandrillo and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor are located in an enviable location with good access to the marine, boatbuilding and water sports industries.

Marinas at Caernarfon, Conwy, Deganwy, Holyhead, Port Dinorwic , Porthmadog and Pwllheli provide over 1,000 berths. The marinas, together with sailing clubs at Caernarfon, Felinheli, Holyhead, Llandudno, Pwllheli and Rhyl, provide a range of marine-related employment opportunities, along with the chance to develop your sailing skills to a high level. The total annual economic benefit of the Conwy and Deganwy marinas alone is worth around £6 million to the local area.

Offshore renewables presents the marine industry with an unprecedented growth opportunity. RenewableUK recently showed the sector doubling direct UK employment to over 10,000 between 2007 and 2010.

Plas Menai, the National Watersports Centre for Wales, is also based locally on the Menai Strait offering employment opportunities to high calibre students and further specialist training in many aspects of water sports including sailing, windsurfing or kayaking.

Following a successful bid for £8.3m, the Pwllheli National Sailing Academy & Events Centre (opposite) will open its doors in 2013. Gwynedd Council has been working in partnership with Pwllheli Sailing Club, Welsh Government, North Wales Water sports, Plas Menai, Coleg Llandrillo Cymru and the Welsh Yachting Association to develop the Academy and the Events Centre.

As one of the educational stakeholders in the bid, the College offers courses in Rhos-on-Sea and Pwllheli which will allow you to gain experience and qualifications and will help you gain employment in the sector.

Courses: Boatbuilding & Repair Level 2 Site: Rhos-on-Sea

When I completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in Outdoor Education at the College in 2010, I was reluctant to go to University due to the high cost. The dinghy sailing and power boating that I had previously experienced on the Outdoor Education Course had spurred an interest in the sea, so I was keen to continue my studies with the Marine department.

I enjoyed most parts of the course; it was all relevant to the industry. I particularly enjoyed developing joinery skills in the work shop. The Day Skipper, which involved a three day yacht trip, the Power Boat course and the VHF radio course were also great fun. It was good to get out on the water.

I now work in Conwy Marina for Network as a Trainee Engineer. I enjoy the variety of work, which mainly involves the repair and commissioning of new and used motor and sailing yachts for the leisure industry in the local area. I still attend College on a day release basis in order to gain the Level 3 qualification.

Courses: Boatbuilding & Repair Level 2 and Marine Engineering Level 3Site: Rhos-on-Sea

Previously I was employed as a security systems installer in London, but was keen to escape the corporate work environment and learn how to manufacture boats, surfboards and kite-race boards.

The courses were broad-based, allowing me to develop the range of skills required by the industry. Navigation and seamanship were taught alongside practical subjects such as modern/traditional boatbuilding techniques and marine propulsion. I’ve got a job as a base engineer for Sunsail Palermo, in Italy. My main duties centre around the repair and maintenance of a fleet of yachts on and around the coast of Sicily and on the mainland.
