Marine Renewable EnergyPROTTEC Collaboration RetreatMarine Renewable EnergyPROJECT PROPOSALS
Develop/Benchmark instrument test regime
Jim Grant19/04/11
1. IDEA
• To share experience between current instrument developers and users
• Identify possible gaps in measurement technologies or weaknesses in current methods/technologies
• Encourage bilateral/international collaboration
• Support nursery test site development
• Scope of innovation measurement techniques (proving new techniques)
1. IDEA (continued)
• Improvement in existing measurement devices and techniques when necessary
• Create better understanding of- the marine environment- the geology of the site- environmental data- atmospheric data- socio-economic implications
3. ACTIONS
• Produce a paper (wave Hub/Finistère) – action involving UoE/Ifremer/UoP/UBO and PROTTEC
•Define a project leader
•Set up further meeting between participants mentioned upward before March 2011, potentially January 2011 in the frame of PROTTEC
•Set up an instrumentation network (engaging businesses)
•Identify potential funding sources within Interreg programmes such as two seas, FP8 with data integration to WEC/TEC testing
4. OUTPUTS
• Define best practice
• New and better instruments
• Definition of instrumentation regimes fit for purpose at test sites
• Matched to stakeholder requirements
5. OUTCOMES
• Contribute to stakeholders
• Match the requirements of stakeholders
6. Initial Interest Group
Christophe Maisondieu, Ifremer,
George Smith, University of ExeterJean-Baptiste Saulnier, University of ExeterJim Grant University of Exeter
JingJing Xu University of PlymouthJuliette Jackson University of PlymouthSanjay Sharma University of Plymouth
Pascal Tarits Université de Bretagne Occidentale
Outcomes to date
Two cross-border meetings between UoE and IFREMER
Mtg 15-17 Dec in Tremough Christophe Maisondieu and Miles Davis visited J-B Saulnier, George Smith, Helen Smith, Lars Johanning et al.Discussion on (i) further joint comparison of sea state analysis carried out near WH and Brittany. (ii) possible further collaboration re moorings. Focus on users of instruments helping them to be more effective in data production and analysis. Work on new measurement techniques using devices such as 5 beam ADCPs, or developing methodologies taking wave data analysis and then feeding that into wave current interaction models
Mtg 16-18 March in Brest. J-B Saulnier with Christophe Maisondieu and Marc Prevosto.
Outcomes to date
Research paper
Sea State Directional Analysis Near the Wave Hub Facility
(Elsevier: Applied Ocean Research)Authors: Saulnier, Maisondieu, Ashton, Smith G
Outcomes to date
Further collaboration
Engage other partners identified
Looking to collaborate with other institutes eg PREVIMER (inst of Metocean data) and SHOM Hydrographic Inst)
Potential European Strategic Framework research project. Some ongoing development s possible through MERIFIC (another INTERREG project) and links to FP7 EU MARINET project
