Wilks is proud to be one of the world’s leading companies in the manufacture and supply of impact protection bumpers and decking systems.

Since 1973 we have supplied many leading boat builders with their profiles and both our customer base and stockists span the globe.

We manufacture a wide range of fendering profiles for both boat and pontoon applications as well as accessories for other marine users including Dek-King®, a superb alternative to teak decking.

At our premises we hold a large stock of profiles in flexible PVC, rigid PVC, PVR, stainless steel, aluminium and rubber but as manufacturers we can also supply to meet your individual trade requirements.

Choosing your fendering profileOne of the first items to consider when selecting which profile to use is:

“Are you fitting your fendering to a flat or flanged (lipped) surface?”

The size of profile is then generally determined by the space available to work with on the boat as well as the requirements of the fendering.

A working boat will often be fitted with a heavy duty ‘D’ profile whereas in contrast a day cruiser would feature a profile akin to a rigid PVC/aluminium profile fitted with a PVC insert.

Choosing your fendering profile



Material typesWe manufacture our fendering profiles in a variety of materials which have been selected to provide optimal performance for the product’s designed application.

The material that profiles are manufactured in are stated within the product description found within our brochures.

PVC - we extrude our profiles in a range of grades (hardnesses), a summary of which can be found below:

Our hardest PVC grades are used in a variety of ways: for individual profiles, as a body/retainer or as a rigid strip to provide strength to softer PVC profiles. On its own it provides a hard wearing, low friction fender. As a body it becomes part of a system that ensures the smooth lines of a boat are not interrupted whilst acting as a retainer for PVC inserts manufactured in a softer grade. This material can still be fitted around most bows or transoms providing a radius is present. Rigid materials are denoted by an ‘R’ following the order code.

Rubber – all of our rubber profiles are extruded from a virgin EPDM based compound which provides excellent resistance to the water, temperature and ozone levels found in the marine environment.

PVR – a well tested compound which has replaced some of the smaller EPDM rubber profiles. The advantages over rubber is that PVR has excellent UV resistance, is non-marking and the colour will not bleed. As the data below shows, PVR is also stronger than its rubber counterpart in a variety of tests:

Hard

A soft, flexible PVC that generally does not require any pre-heating therefore making it easier to fit. A softer compound also provides better impact when compared to harder materials.

A hard, flexible compound which is preferred by trade customers as it provides a better final fit. However, this material requires heating prior to fitting in order to make the profile more malleable in order to stretch over flanges or around any tight radius.



General Information

Lengths

As noted within each product information panel shown both in our main catalogue and online, our larger rubber D profiles are generally stocked in 3m lengths. Whilst this means that the butt joining of profiles is required, it also ensures that manageable section weights are handled when fitting. Should you require longer lengths then please contact our sales team who will be happy to discuss your requirements.

Pre-formed bends

We are able to supply pre-formed bow and transom bends on a selection of profiles manufactured in EPDM rubber. These are produced in 1.5m lengths with the angle centrally positioned.

Rigid PVC or aluminium body

Essentially both products are used for the same purpose – to compliment a boat’s clean lines whilst retaining a PVC insert which acts as a rub rail.

It really is simply a matter of personal preference as both will bend to the average boat’s bow or transom. However with the application of heat whilst fitting it is also possible to bend the rigid PVC downwards such as when the gunnel leads into a bathing platform.

As an alternative to using PVC inserts we also offer a range of rigid PVC bodies which carry pre-drilled stainless steel inserts to offer a modern, contemporary look.

BUMP! is the latest boat fendering system from Wilks and has been developed to provide quick, simple installation without compromise to impact resistance - something that we are sure will appeal to all!

Not only easier to fit than traditional D Fender, BUMP! also handles curves and 80mm radius without the need to mitre either track or body.

BUMP! is available from stock in either a 53mm or 65mm body with a single track size to accommodate both.

Fitting instructions for PVC 1495/6

The rigid PVC retainer is screwed or pop riveted to the flange. It may be serrated around bow or transom bends.

The fendering profile is then clipped into place and secured through the underside with screws in the flange.
